LAOS DAM | Nam Ngum Dam - First Hydropower Dam In Laos, Thalat, Laos
This is a Laos dam, it's called the Nam Ngum Dam and it's the first hydropower dam in Laos. Built-in the small village of Thalat, Laos.
Construction began in 1968 and completed in 1971. This is what it looks like today.
I think looks beautiful and quite amazing actually. It looks big and the water colour looks really nice.
As you can probably tell, I haven't seen many dams in my lifetime. So you can probably understand why I'm so amazed by this dam.
I'm sure most people who come to Laos, will nevr get to see this dam, cause you don't hear about it often.
People mainly go to the touristy areas. I wouldn't call Thalat, a touristy area by anymeans.
Although, there is a big reservoir up the hill just a little bit further and you can take a big boat around the reservoir to other smaller islands.
But it is a bit pricey. I will show you all one day.

Laos: Nam Ngum Dam
Nam Ngum Dam is a hydroelectric dam on the Nam Ngum river, a tributary of the Mekong River. The dam is approx. 90 km north of Vientiane, on route 13 to Luang Prabang. The Dam was completed in 1971 with two turbines having a capacity of 30 megawatts. Today, with five turbines in place, the dam has a capacity of 960 megawatts. The electricity generated benefits most of the country with about 80% being exported to Thailand. The resulting reservoir, named Ang Nam Ngum, is 250 sq. km. and is a popular destination with floating restaurants moored near the dam at the village of Ban Thalat.. Hundreds of islets are scattered all over the lake, with pleasure boats available to hire for cruising the waters........
Laos the Series: Eco Tourism at Nam Ngum Dam
Heading to Laos, our team recently went to visit the Nam Ngum Dam, a mega hydropower plant. Besides being the major generator of electricity for their own country and its neighbors like Thailand, Laos also supports sustainable environmental development along with eco-tourism in the area.
THALAT NAM NGUM LAKE, Vientiane, Laos - BeautyLovesTech
Thalat Nam Ngum Lake, Vientiane, Laos - BeautyLovesTech
After about 6 days of catching up with family and sightseeing Vientiane we decided to take a drive to see Nam Ngum Lake, about 50 miles (80 km) north of Vientiane Laos. It was on our sightseeing list. Although it's only 50 miles, it takes a lot longer than you'd think because the roads going north are terrible, with potholes big enough to lose a tire! The scenery during the drive was fantastic, going through small towns and green countryside.
Just passing the Nam Ngum Dam, we're getting close to the Nam Ngum Lake. Pulling up to lake we could see it was huge! and so beautiful and peaceful looking. We parked and made our way down to the floating restaurant. One of the big attractions is to order food from the restaurant and charter a longboat cruise to enjoy lunch and magnificient views cruising through the waters. There are 2 people working the boat, the boat captain and a young girl to keep the Beer Lao flowing :) They were both friendly and did their jobs well! Did I mention the boat is equipped with a Karaoke machine? It was great! After eating an excellent variety of food, we (or the girls I should say) sang a bunch of Karaoke songs and played music on our mp3 player.
A little while later we pulled up to a small farm-style island. On the island, there were chickens and craft goods for sale. I was thinking how nice it would be to live there. After about 10 minutes, we headed back to the boat and back to the restaurant where we started.
On the way back we stopped at Nam Ngum Dam to take some pictures. It was the time of day where the sun casts a beautiful warm glow over everything. We will definitely come back to Nam Ngum Lake next time we visit Laos. It's not too far to drive and very enjoyable. I think it would be nice to stay a night there at a lodge somewhere.

Phou Khao Khouay And Nnam Ngum Lake, Laos
We are in the second month of the rainy season here in Laos. Everything is lush and green and the dust of the hot season, that covers everything here, is just a memory!
Despite this, we still have many sunny days and it is always hot.
Today we decided to take the car and head to the jungle covered mountains north of Vientiane, in particular buffalo Mountain that overlooks the Reservoir lake of Nnam Ngum.
As we leave the Mekong River plains, and start our ascent, the clouds descend and the rains begin. The scenery is magnificent and the rain clouds add to the drama unfolding.....

Two hours north of Vientiane is the Nam Ngum Dam, a hydroelectric dam on the Nam Ngum river, a major tributary of the Mekong in Laos. It is the oldest dam in Laos, and its reservoir is the largest water body in the country.

Laos: A trip on Ang Nan Ngum Lake
This is good day trip out of Vientiane, and is just a few Km off the road to Vang Vieng and beyond.
A couple of hours by car, north of Vientiane is the vast artificial lake of Ang Nam Ngum created when the Nam Ngum River was dammed. To get to the lake you pass the great dam itself in a beautiful landscaped area and there are good views across the river to the structure.
BEAUTIFUL RIVER IN RURAL LAOS | Nam Ngum River In Rural Laos, Thalat, Laos
This is one beautiful river in rural Laos. It is called the Nam Ngum river in the small town of Thalat, Laos.
I didn't expect the river to look this beautiful as I was crossing the bridge to the main town center.
It was a hot day, but there were nice blue skies above, which made this view of the river more spectacular.
Laos has some beautiful hidden places, and I do intend to come back to explore more of this amazing country.
It feels nice to be away from the big city from time to time.

RICE FIELDS IN LAOS | Real Rice Fields In Rural Laos, Thalat, Laos
These are the real-life rice fields in Laos, rural Laos, in Thalat, Laos.
I was fortunate enough to visit the real-life rice fields in Laos, and see how the locals make their living in rural Laos, in todays day and age.
I believe my parents also worked in the rice fields like this before I was born. Seeing it with my own eyes really makes me feel sad for these people.
They slave all day and night in the scorching weather in Laos and they only get paid a small amount, each day.
Not to mention, everything in Laos is expensive, because it's all imported.
So they get low wages, and everything here in Laos, in general, is more expensive. Even more so than Thailand.
So I really don't know how the locals survive here.
