Bushfires Spread Across Namadgi National Park Near Canberra

Passengers flying over Canberra yesterday (Jan 27) captured the raging bushfires in the Namadgi National Park.

The Orroral Valley fire has spread across 2575 hectares in size while travelling in a south-easterly direction in the park in Australian Capital Territory. There are fears it could cross the border into New South Wales.

The Department of Defence said the fire is believed to have been caused by an Army MRH-90 helicopter that was in the area supporting bushfire operations.

It is believed heat from a helicopter landing light likely started a grassfire underneath the aircraft while it was grounded.

Bookings are essential (with a three night limit applicable). Bookings are made through the Namadgi National Park Visitors Centre, located near the village of Tharwa.

It is a 15km return hike, with many steps to climb. At an elevation of 1,357m, there are great views from the top.

Requested by Hanken I'm making a video diary, basically uploading random video material. This clip is taken from the beautiful scenery in the Namadgi National Park, just outside Canberra.

Fourie Family Travels Orroral Valley, Canberra, Australia

The Fouries went on their biggest adventure yet. 5 days through the Australian outback! This video is the trip condensed into a day.

Starting at Yankee Hat in Namadgi National park we walked through rendezvous creek. Here we camped in the frost hollow before crossing into nursery creek the next morning. From here we followed the swamp into the stunning Orroral valley. The Orroral valley is home to hundreds of kangaroos which were all carrying beautiful joeys, well 50% of them were. After a beautiful night we attempted to climb to legoland. This short climb of about 300 vertical meters took us nearly 4 hours. Dense bush, thorns and huge boulders hampering us at every turn!
We filled up with enough water for the next 2 days, around 14 litres and headed onto honey suckle. As you approach honey suckle the kangaroos thin out and you start to see more wallabies. Smaller but less timid and so you can get much closer. The final full day was a long trek to the saddle of Mount Tennent. Another of trail adventure took us to the summit where we camped and watched the sun go down from the top of a huge boulder. The next morning, we watched the sunrise from Mount Tennent before heading down the mountain and back to Outward Bound base camp.

It was a stunning trip made possible with the help of the wonderful people at Outward Bound.

Booroomba Rocks Walk - Namadgi National Park

Booroomba Rocks are located in Namadgi National Park situated in the Australian Capital Territory. The walk to reach the summit takes approximately 30 - 45 minutes each way depending on your fitness. It's an incredible view of the surrounding mountains and trees from the top which we completed in the morning. There is plenty of trees and shade along the way but make sure you take some water along with you for the walk.

01. Australian War Memorial

A 54.5 square kilometres (21.0 sq mi) protected area, on the fringe of Namadgi National Park. Consists of a large valley floor, the Tidbinbilla Mountain and the Gibraltar range. The word 'Tidbinbilla' is Aboriginal in origin and is derived from the word Jedbinbilla – a place where boys become men.

05. Telstra Tower
A telecommunications tower and lookout that is situated above the summit of Black Mountain. Also known as Black Mountain Tower and formerly called the Telecom Tower. Rising 195.2 metres (640 ft) above the mountain summit, it is not only a landmark in Canberra but also offers panoramic views of the city and its surrounding countryside from an indoor observation deck and two outdoor viewing platforms.

06. National Dinosaur Museum
Australia's largest permanent display of prehistoric specimens, located in Gold Creek Village. The museum's exhibition follows the evolution of life, with a particular focus on dinosaurs. The gift shop stocks a range of natural history books, dinosaur replicas, toys, fossils, crystals, minerals and meteorites.

07. Canberra Glassworks
An Australian gallery and glass art studio open to the general public to view the glass artists working. Opened in May 2007 by Jon Stanhope, it is the largest dedicated glass studio facility in Australia.

08. National Carillon
A large carillon managed and maintained by the National Capital Authority on behalf of the Commonwealth of Australia. Situated on Aspen Island. Was a gift from the British government to the people of Australia to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the National Capital.

09. Mount Stromlo Observatory
An observatory was established in 1924 as The Commonwealth Solar Observatory. The dome built to house the Oddie telescope was the first Commonwealth building constructed in the newly established Australian Capital Territory.

10. Big Splash Waterpark
The only waterpark in Canberra. It originally opened with a 50-metre (160 ft) Pool with a kids pool at the end of it in the late 1960s. The slides were introduced in the early 1980s. Located in the suburb of Macquarie.

Canberra faces ‘most serious’ bushfire threat since 2003 | ABC News

Defence helicopter believed to have started Canberra’s ‘most serious’ bushfire threat since 2003 | ABC News

A fire started by a defence helicopter landing in the Namadgi National Park south of Canberra has quickly become the city's most serious bushfire threat since 2003.

The Orroral Valley fire had been growing at a rate of more than 400 hectares per hour, and was more than 6,122 hectares in size at 5:30pm today.

There is currently no threat to Canberra suburbs, but the blaze could spot as close to a kilometre from the city's southernmost suburb Banks this evening.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the fire posed the greatest risk to the ACT since the 2003 bushfires, which killed four people and destroyed hundreds of homes.

This is the most serious situation we have faced since the 2003 bushfires, Mr Barr said.

Winds are now gusting north-easterly at speeds up to 40km/h, according to ACT Emergency Services Agency (ESA) commissioner Georgeina Whelan.

The weather this evening is not favourable for firefighters, Ms Whelan said.

She said she expected the fire to burn in the national park for several weeks.

Namadgi Ferals 2012

A few feral animals in Namadgi National Park (primarily for my blog)
