Namhansanseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is home to more than 40 hiking trails to be explored. A recent study has uncovered a clue about how these ancient trails were used many centuries ago.

Nowadays this nameless trail is used by locals to exercise, but Joseon Dynasty monarchs used it to reach the royal tomb of King Sejong the Great. The two-meter-wide, slightly slanted trail was used for transporting kings in palanquins surrounded by a crowd of servants. Historians have found that Saeogae, a nine-kilometer uphill trail in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do Province, was used in the past by scholars from the southeastern region of the nation to travel to state exams. The Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation reached this conclusion after studying Joseon-era maps and The Annals of King Taejong.
[Soundbite] Shin Chang-hee(Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation) : We have checked various ancient maps and documents as well as a map produced during Japanese colonial rule using a modern survey method to find out how the ancient trails were used.
The government of Gyeonggi-do Province plans to repair a 99-kilometer section of ancient trails around Namhansanseong Fortress and develop them into hiking paths that will be open to the public in the second half of next year.
[Soundbite] Kim Dong-joo(Gyeonggi-do Provincial Government) : We plan to build a 30-kilometer section first. We will install a storyboard and develop programs about history.
When the historic trails are open the public, hikers will be able to enjoy the ancient fortress, which is Korea's 11th UNESCO World Heritage site, in more diverse ways.
Korea Temple Namhansansung Janggyeongsa [한국 사찰 남한산성 장경사]
Namhansansung Janggyeongsa, one of the oldest temples in Gyeonggi Province, is located in Namhansansung Fortress in central Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province, and is the 15th National Cultural Heritage Site.
Namhansanseong Fortress, which was protecting the capital city along with Bukhansanseong Fortress, was built in 16 years (1638), during the construction of the fortress. It helped to recruit monks from eight provinces nationwide to build fortresses, the only of the nine temples to be kept intact so far.

경기도의 오래된 사찰중 하나인 남한산성 장경사는 경기도 광주시 중부면 산성리 남한산성 안에 있는 사찰로 경기도 문화재자료 제15호이다.
남한산성은 북한산성과 더불어 도성(서울)을 지키던 산성으로 장경사는 남한산성을 지을 당시인 조선 인조 16년(1638)에 세웠다. 전국 8도의 승려들을 모집하여 산성 짓는 것을 도왔는데, 이때 승군(僧軍)들이 훈련을 받으며 머무르던 9개의 절 중 지금까지 온전히 보존되어 있는 유일한 절이다.

Namhansanseong fortress in Gwangju is added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The decision was announced Sunday by the 38th UNESCO World Heritage Committee, meeting in Doha, Qatar.

힐링도시4K 남한산성 옛길 Namhansanseong Old Walks
남한산성 옛길(남한산성길)은 조선시대 지리학자 김정호의 '대동지지'에서 봉화로(한양∼경북 봉화군)를 기반으로 복원한길입니다. 조선 시대 왕들이 여주 영릉(세종대왕릉)으로 참배 가던 '거둥길(왕이 다니는 길)'이었고 병자호란 당시 인조가 피난했던 '고난의 길'이기도 합니다.
경상 지방의 선비들이 과거를 보기 위해 한양으로 올라오던 '과거 길'이었고 상인들이 걸었던 '보부상 길'인 남한산성 옛길을 걸어보았습니다.
남한산성은 해발 500m가 넘는 곳에 위치한 산성으로, 성곽의 전체길이는 12.4km이다. 병자호란 때 청나라에 대항한 곳 잘아려져 있는데, 당시 조선의 국왕인 인조는 이곳에서 47일간 항전하였으나 결국 성문을 열고 나와 항복하였다. 남한산성의 역사는 삼국 시대까지 거슬러 올라간다. 나·당전쟁이 한창이던 신라 문무왕 12년(672)에 한산주에 쌓은 '주장성'이 현재 남한산성의 토대였던 것으로 추정된다. 조선 인조 4년(1626)에 축성을 완성하고 병자호란 이후 방어력을 높이기 위해 동쪽에 봉암성, 한봉성을 쌓는 등 여러 차례 증축을 거쳐 현재의 모습을 갗추게 되었다. 1963년 1월 21일 남한산성의 성벽이 국가 사적 제57호로 지정되었고, 1971년 3월 17일 경기도립공원으로 지정되었으며(제158호), 2014년에는 유네스크 세계유산에 등제되었다. 오늘날 남한산성은 주변은 시민들에게 휴식처이자, 건강을 위한 등산 산책 코스로도 인기를 얻고 있다(출처 경기도남한산성세계유산센터)
Namhansanseong Old Walks, It was the way the scholars of the Joseon Dynasty went to the capital to take the exam. And It was the way the King of Korea was evacuated.
Namhansanseong Provincial Park surrounds Namhansanseong Fortress, one of four forts built to protect Hanyang (the former name of Seoul). Gaeseong, Suwon, Ganghwa and Gwangju are located in the north, south, west, and east direction respectively. Namhansanseong Fortress is located to the east in Gwangju. The park is situated on Namhansan Mountain, 24km southeast from Seoul and 6km northeast from Seongnam. The length of trails is a total of approximately 12.4 km (main fortress 8.9km, external fortress 3.2km, Sinnamsanseong Fortress 0.2km). The height is 7.3m.

In this episode, I took my friend Jalen to an UNESCO heritage site in Gwangju-si in South Korea.
It's in southeastern side of Seoul takes about an hour.
Namhansanseong was designed as an emergency capital for the Joseon dynasty.
It is aligned with the ridges of the mountain ?for maximum defensibility.
The fortress along the mountain is about 12 Km long.
And I’m telling you it wasn’t an easy course.

NamHanSan Korea ???????? 南漢山
Namhan Mountain is a 460 m peak in Gyeonggi-do province, South Korea. It lies on the border between southern Seoul and the city of Gwangju (not to be confused with Gwangju Metropolitan City).
An old stone-walled fortress named Namhansanseong stands at the top, and is a tourist attraction
남한산(南漢山) 은 경기도 광주시 남한산성면과 서울특별시 송파구 마천동 일부에 걸쳐 있는 산이다. 주장산(晝長山), 일장산(日長山)이라고도 하는데, 이곳에 사적 제57호로 지정된 남한산성이 위치한다.
남한산은 일견 평범한 산처럼 보이지만 산속이 광대한 분지로 되어 있고 밖으로는 험한 경사를 이뤄 천혜의 요새지로 평가되고 있다.
또한 청량산 482.6m, 벌봉 515m, 한봉 418m, 검단산 520m으로 이어지고 있어 산세의 구별이 모호하다.
산성은 정확히 말하면 청량산과 남한산에 걸쳐 있다는 것이 맞는 표현일 것이다. 청량산과 같이 남한산맥의 지맥으로 분류되고 있다.
장경사(長慶寺:경기문화재자료 15) 등의 사찰이 있다. 산성 북서쪽으로 청량산(482.6m)이라 불리는 산쪽으로 수어장대가 있고 현절사(顯節祠:경기유형문화재 4)·청량전(淸凉殿)·숭렬전(崇烈殿)·연무관(演武館)·지수당(池水堂)·침과정(枕戈亭) 등이 있다. 성안에는 남한산 법화사지와 부도가 보존되고 있다. 경기도 문화재자료 제86호로 등록되어 있다.
이밖에 허물어져 가는 산성의 남문을 중수하여 보존하였고 마을 안쪽으로 임금이 납시어 활울 쏘았던 행궁터와 송암정(松巖亭)·관어정(觀魚亭)·영춘정(迎春亭) 같은 정자 등이 보존되고 있다. 1971년 3월 남한산성과 함께 총 36.4km2를 도립공원으로 지정되었다.

남한산성(南漢山城)은 대한민국 경기도 광주시, 성남시, 하남시에 걸쳐 있는 남한산을 중심으로 하는 산성이다. 병자호란 때 조선의 16대 왕 인조가 청나라에 대항한 곳으로 잘 알려져 있으며, 1950년대에 이승만 대통령에 의해 공원화된 후 현재 도립공원으로 지정되어 많은 시민들이 찾는 장소가 되었다. 병자호란 당시 인조는 이곳에서 40여일간 항전하였으나 결국 성문을 열고 항복한 곳으로 유명하다.
남한산성의 역사는 삼국 시대까지 거슬러 올라간다. 한때 백제의 수도 하남위례성으로 추정되기도 했던 남한산성은 백제의 시조 온조왕이 세운 성으로 알려졌으나, 신라 시대에 쌓은 주장성이라는 설도 있다. 조선 시대에 인조와 숙종 때에 각종 시설물을 세우고 성을 증축하여 오늘날의 형태를 갖추게 되었다. 그러나 일제 강점기 직전인 1907년에 일본군에 의해 다수의 건물이 훼손되기도 하였다.

Korea's Ancient Fortress Wall on CNN
Having been built in the 7th century, Namhansanseong Fortress in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do has stood the test of time. CNN recently featured the site in its program Global Treasure, which highlights UNESCO World Heritage Sites all over the world. The program detailed how the fortress walls were built to fend off attackers from China’s Tang Dynasty, and that they are 12 kilometers long and as high as 7 meters. Namhansanseong was made a World Heritage Site last year, along with 26 other places.
