NamibRand Nature Reserve in Windhoek, Namibia
NamibRand Nature Reserve in Windhoek, Namibia
The NamibRand Nature Reserve, located in southern Namibia, is a private nature reserve established to help protect and conserve the unique ecology and wildlife of the south-west Namib Desert. Conserving the pro-Namib, the area along the eastern edge of the Namib Desert, is critically important in order to facilitate seasonal migratory wildlife routes and to protect biodiversity. It is probably the largest private nature reserve in southern Africa, extending over an area of 215,000 hactre. The Reserve shares a 100km border with the Namib-Naukluft National Park in the west and is bordered in the east by the imposing Nubib Mountains. Virtually all facets of the Namib Desert are represented on the Reserve – sand and gravel plains and stretches of savanna alternate with mountain ranges, inselbergs and vegetated dune belts.
The Reserve originated in 1984 as the dream of J.A. Brückner (R.I.P. 08 December 2016) to extend desert frontiers by integrating a large number of former livestock farms and developing a wildlife sanctuary. To date, seventeen former livestock farms have been rehabilitated into a single continuous natural habitat. Recognising the importance of wilderness areas, the NamibRand Nature Reserve has exclusively set aside more than 15% of its total area for wilderness.
The NamibRand Nature Reserve was registered as a non-profit private nature reserve in 1992. All landowners belonging to the Reserve have signed agreements and adopted a constitution which sets the land aside for conservation - now and in the future. The Reserve is financially self-sustaining mainly through high quality, low impact tourism.

Cycling Namibia - Part 2 (South) : From Windhoek to the Orange
This is the sequel of Cycling in Namibia part 1 (North), with 1400 new kilometers from Windhoek to the Orange river, bordering South Africa, in July and August 2014.
The Part 2 (South) features the C26 through the Khomas Highland and the Kupferberg pass, the forever blue skies around the HESS telescope, the very steep Spreetshoogte pass near the Tropic of Capricorn, the incredible views from the dunes over Dead Vlei and Sossusvlei, lots of wildlife and boks cutting my road, lots of scenic gravel roads too, as the Namib desert is a cycling paradise, the D707 around the Tiras mountains that broke a bit of my frame, a sandblasting experience on the road through the Sperrgebiet to Lüderitz, Kolmanskop ghost town and the Garub wild horses, and ends with the gorgeous scenery of the C13 along the Orange river and the Aussenkehr grape farms.

Luxury Lodges of Africa.Mountain View Suite. Wolwedans Safari Camp NamibRand Nature Reserve, Namibia
A drone eye view of the Mountain View Suite. With 200 square metres of deck rising above the dunes, the Mountain View Suite provides ample living space and adds a touch of luxury to the Wolwedans Collection.
The Suite is located within walking distance from the Dunes Lodge, yet it is secluded, allowing guests to spend time in a homely and stylish atmosphere. Consisting of a spacious en-suite bedroom with a king-size bed, the Suite enables guests to enjoy the view of their private dune valley to the fullest.
A shaded patio provides an ideal venue for meals and relaxed hours lazing in a hammock. Add to this a spacious lounge, bar cabinet and dining area and you have a wonderful home away from home.
In the event that guests wish to enjoy their meals ‘entre-nous’, an open-plan kitchenette supports the preparation of meals at the Suite. An east-facing veranda and sundeck lead from the platform into the surrounding dunes. The main veranda has a ‘star-gazing’ bed, which provides a wonderful sleep-out venue during summer.
Keeping in line with the traditional Wolwedans style, the ambience is that of plain elegance embraced by a natural, comfortable charm.

Nature in Namibia
Namibia's greatest attraction is the magnificent natural beauty not only of its game reserves and national parks, but also its remote and beautiful deserts and plains. Namibia is one of few countries in the world to specifically address conservation and protection of natural resources in its constitution. Most of the images are from Namib-Naukluft National Park and Etosha National Park .
