Tape Art around the world: Namibia
Here is a video of our tape art adventure in Namibia! In cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Namibia, we organised a tape art workshop with locals at the Community Arts Centre in Katutura (KCAC) and designed the outside walls of the Goethe Institute in Windhoek during its open day. Big thanks to the Goethe Institut and everyone involved for this unique opportunity to spread tape art in Namibia. It was an incredibly inspiring, fun, artistic and multicultural experience - we hope to be back soon :-).

NAMIBIA CRAFT: the Unknown and the Outsiders
Becky Beamer
Documentary TRT : 17 min
Nov. 2015
Film Type: Documentary, Short, Student
Genre: Natural History, African, documentary, women, craft, culture
A multimedia project inclusive of a documentary short, artifacts, photographs, and book work exploring the current state of indigenous craft process and materiality in Namibia. Stories and documentation is offered through personal narratives, collections, and ethnographic notations.
Namibian art is under represented around the world. This project provides an opportunity to break new ground: digitally preserving craft culture and magnifying the artisan African voice for a new audience. Since gaining independence in 1990, Namibia started recognizing indigenous artisans as participants in the country’s artistic narrative; however, craft materiality, craft processes and their social influences have yet to be digitally recorded. Transformation is inevitable and the materiality, craft process, and meaning behind the products are changing quickly. Namibian Craft: The Unknown and the Outsiders is a snapshot of the current craft culture narrative in Namibia.
Bauern Stube - Namibia
Bauern Stube is one of Windhoek's more established dinning venues, serving a unique blend of African Fusion cuisine inspired from the owner's home grown southern Namibian heritage and food preference, mixing traditional Namibian, Afrikaans, and German with some western influences. Owner managed one is insured generous portions, great service and scrumptious meals in a vibrant atmosphere with Ernst hosting and Hantie cooking up a storm in the kitchen. This is truly a place where locals and visitors alike are treated to home grown Namibian hospitality and organic produce mostly supplied directly from the family farm in southern Namibia. Spoil yourself to pure local bliss...

Introducing the Concordia College in Windhoek / Namibia
On our last trip to Namibia we had the opportunity to visit some UNESCO associated secondary schools in Windhoek. One of them was the Concordia College. This school has a partner school in Germany : the Graf Adolf Gymnasium in Tecklenburg, a city not far away from Münster. We had only two hours for our media workshop so after the usual introduction to our project we decided to make a spontaneous video report introducing the Concordia College.

The Taste of Namibia! | Doku | Tag 2: Namibias Streetfood | Ankerkraut

Tsintsabis (Namibia Africa)
Tsinsabis (Traditional Bushman's settlement). When I drove to Tsinsabis (about 80 klms) I was surprised to see groups of happy, smiling people (20-30 people) every 10 klms or so waiting beside the road. When I asked a local what they were doing he said they were the families working on the farms. It was the end of the month (pay day) and they wanted to get into Tsumeb but they had no transport. By arrangement with the farm owners they would congregate in certain spots and the farm trucks would pick them up and transport them. There were very few bicycles in Tsumeb which I find quite strange. I also found it strange to see people walking along the road many kilometres from the nearest settlement just on sundown. What did they do when it got dark and there was no moon? We picked up a couple of thatch workers who were hitch-hiking from the Cheetah Conservation Park. They wanted to go to Tsumeb at least 40 klms away. They would never have made it before dark if we had not stopped.

Namibian Bushman's settlement of Tsintsabis
No luxuries here!. Very basic structures. No running water. I wondered how they cooked although I did see man and women gathering sticks - the woman carrying the load (as they should!)
