Namtso or Lake Nam is a mountain lake on the border between Damxung County of Lhasa Prefecture and Baingoin County of Nagqu Prefecture in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, approximately 112 kilometres (70 mi) NNW of Lhasa.
Namtso was born in the Paleogene age, as a result of Himalayan tectonic plate movements. The lake lies at an elevation of 4,718 m (15,479 ft), and has a surface area of 1,920 km2 (740 sq mi). This salt lake is the largest lake in the Tibet Autonomous Region. However, it is not the largest lake on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. That title belongs to Qinghai Lake (more than twice the size of Namtso); which lies more than 1,000 km (620 mi) to the north-east in Qinghai.
Namtso has five uninhabited islands of reasonable size, in addition to one or two rocky outcrops. The islands have been used for spiritual retreat by pilgrims who walk over the lake's frozen surface at the end of winter, carrying their food with them. They spend the summer there, unable to return to shore again until the water freezes the following winter. This practice is no longer permitted by Chinese authorities.

In an almost untouched corner of North East Asia, 3200 metres above sea level on the Tibetan plateau, lies the largest lake in China; Qinghai Hu - also known in Tibetan and Mongolian language as The Blue Lake.
The lake is in particular sacred to the Tibetans inhabiting these remote altitudes, and they see it as their religious call to protect the local environment.
In the first episode of the series Lakes on the Roof of the World,
we travel to hidden islands, where foreigners reportedly never set foot before. We meet the Tibetan nomads, whose traditional lifestyle is challenged by the Chinese government; the Buddhist nuns of the secluded Lotus Monastery; and a 'Dragon's head lute' player passing on his ancient musical heritage.

Yamdrok Lake

Yamdroktso Lake is located at the Nangartse County of Shannan Prefecture, some 110 km to the southwest of Lhasa. It is 1 of 3 Holy Lakes in Tibet (the other 2 are Namtso Lake and Lake Manasarovar).

Yamdrok Lake is a freshwater lake in Tibet, it is one of the three largest sacred lakes in Tibet. After a request from a c0-worker who will be retiring soon I found myself asking our guide if there was somewhere I could ride a yak. Yep most touristy thing I did the whole trip.
