Shantou
Shantou, also known as Swatow or Santow, is a prefecture-level city on the eastern coast of Guangdong province, People's Republic of China, with a total population of 5,391,028 as of 2010 and an administrative area of 2,064 square kilometres. Shantou has direct jurisdiction over six districts and one county, and the six urban districts of Shantou have a population of 5,330,764. With it and the surrounding cities of Jieyang and Chaozhou, the metropolitan region known as Chaoshan covers an area of 10,404 km2, and had a permanent population of 13,937,897 at the end of 2010. It's built up area spread of 11 districts was home to 11,635,577 inhabitants at the 2010 census.
Shantou, a city significant in 19th-century Chinese history as one of the treaty ports established for Western trade and contact, was one of the original Special Economic Zones of the People's Republic of China established in the 1980s, but did not blossom in the manner that cities such as Shenzhen, Xiamen and Zhuhai did. However, it remains eastern Guangdong's economic centre, and is home to Shantou University, a member of the Project 211 group.

「世界農業遺産(GIAHS)」とは国際連合食糧農業機関 (FAO)が提唱している「Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems」の略
GIAHS is an abbreviation for “Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems, which are proposed and designated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
平成25年5月30日、石川県七尾市で開催された「世界農業遺産 (GIAHS)国際会議」において、宇佐市を含む4市1町1村(宇佐市、杵築市、豊後高田市、 国東市、姫島村、日出町)からなる「国東半島宇 佐地域世界農業遺産推進協議会」が申請していた「クヌギ林とため池がつなぐ国東半島・宇佐の農林水産循環」 ~森の恵み しいたけの故郷~ が「世界農業遺産」に認定 された。
On May 30th, 2013 the proposal put forward by a combination of four cities, one town and one village (Usa City, Kitsuki City, Bungotakada City, Kunisaki City, Himeshima Village, Hiji Town) at the international conference of the Food and Agriculture Organisation in Nanao City, Ishikawa was accepted and the “Kunisaki Peninsula Usa integrated forestry, agriculture and fisheries system” was designated as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System.
これは、宇佐神宮を中心とした千年以上続く「国東半島・宇佐地域」の伝統的な農耕文化やくらしと密接に結びついた民族宗教文化の歴史が世界に認められたことになる。
This is recognition on the world stage of the connection between the traditional farming culture, the way of life etc. and the ethnic religion and culture for over 1,000 years in the area of the Kunisaki Peninsula and Usa Districts, with Usa Shrine at the center.

今回の世界農業遺産の対象地は大分県の「国東半島 宇佐地域」。
This time the area of the World Agricultural Hertitage Site being focused on is the Usa area of Kunisaki Peninsula in Oita prefecture.
宇佐市は西側に位置し、雨が少なく、川は急勾配で短く、土壌は水はけが良いのが特徴です。
Usa city is located in the western part of the Kunisaki peninsula. The characteristics of the area include low annual rainfall, short rivers with steep inclines and good draining soil.
農業遺産に認定されたエリアの中でも、宇佐市にはたくさんの特徴、見所がある。田畑を潤すための水路に石橋が多く使われていることオオサンショウウオをはじめとした貴重な動植物が農林業と共存していること

Many precious plants and animals, including the Japanese giant salamander coexist with the agricultural and forestry businesses

Delicious rice is produced in the small rice fields near the upper reaches of the Yakkan river, while efficient management of the downstream areas allows for the development of large scale agricultural businesses. Grapes, Yuzu etc. suited to the environment enjoy booming production

Five years after the Fukushima nuclear disaster and 30 years after Chernobyl, the “Pacific Peace Forum” was held onboard Peace Boat's 90th Global Voyage, with exchange between representatives from communities affected by nuclear testing in the Pacific and by the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
