Harbor Life – Su’ao and Nanfang’ao
The ocean-port town of Su’ao is a short drive south from the NCFTA along Provincial Highway 2, the coastal highway. On the way you reach the mountains that come down to the sea and you’ll pass through a highway tunnel that pierces a spur just before entering the town.
The spur juts right out into the Pacific. A bit further south is another arm extending off the coast; its tip, long ago a hilly island, is now connected to the mainland by a low-hill gravel-and-sand isthmus created by the strong coastal currents. Between these arms are deep waters, and three ports: Beigang’ao (“North Side Port”), Su’ao, and Nanfang’ao (“South Side Port”).
Note: Readers will notice that many of this article’s place names end in “ao/澳.” This character means “deep waters – a place where seagoing vessels can moor,” and is used for locations with natural deep-water harbors where ports have been developed.
The Qixingling Trail takes you up on top of the northern spur. Find the trailhead right beside the south entrance to Su’ao Cold Spring Park, a key local attraction. “Qixingling” means “Seven Stars Peak”; the trail is 4,750 meters long, with a maximum elevation of 270 meters. The highest and most photo-worthy harbor/ocean/mountain panorama awaits at lookout No. 6, reached from the trailhead in a steep, steady 25 minutes, beauteous butterflies entertaining you all the way. If time allows, continue at least ten minutes further and you are reward with eagle-vantage photo ops north over the Yilan Plain, central mountains, and iconic Guishan (“Turtle”) Island in the far distance.
Nanfang’ao has three side-by-side narrow harbors, all dedicated to fishing craft. At the foot of the middle harbor is exuberantly ornate Nantian Temple, dedicated to Mazu, Goddess of the Sea. Construction was started in 1946 after, locals believed, the goddess saved them from disaster. On the south side of this harbor’s mouth is the raucous Nanfang’ao fish market, where boats constantly pull up to unload catch for sale at a dense array of stands, creating more vivid photo opps.
Halfway down the harbor’s north side (No. 81, Yugang Rd.) is the Sangang Iron Factory Museum. The factory, set up here in 1962 and closed in 2004, was dedicated to fishing-boat repair and maintenance. The museum, stuffed to the gunwales with now-antique machinery, period photos, and other fishing industry-theme treasure, is run by the son of the key factory founder.
Other Nanfang’ao spots of interest include Neipi Beach, the pleasant long and arcing sand/gravel beach on the outside of the earlier-described isthmus (dotted with attractive cafés and eateries), Doufu Cape, a spot popular with snorkelers on the outside of the “former island” at the end of the isthmus, so named because its rock resembles soybean curd, and Zhu Dayu Culture Museum, established by the local fishermen’s association to showcase Nanfang’ao seafood products (located by Nanfang’ao Bridge beside the northernmost harbor).
Photo Tip: This region’s most popular photo-taking spot is almost surely the Nanfang’ao Observation Deck, perched cliffside at the 108km mark of Su-Hua Highway. Directly above the Nanfang’ao harbors, your sunrise shots are guaranteed terrific, as are your evening shots, when the harbor-area lights come on and dynamic-design Nanfang’ao Bridge is bathed in changing pastels.

TAIWAN BRIDGE COLLAPSED LEAVING FIVE DEAD
Suao, Taiwan - Residents of Yilan were shocked after a bridge collapsed in the early Tuesday morning of October 2nd killing at least 5 people.
Around 9:30 AM, the 60 ft. high Nanfangao bridge fell into the harbor while an petrol tanker was passing on it that also plunged into the water crushing 3 fishing boats below it and trapped fishermen in the boats. The shocking incidence had caused five lives including 3 foreign fishermen from the Philippines and 10 injured.
The 140 meter long single - arch bridge was one of the main tourist attraction of Suao and it was constructed in 1998 to replace a low bridge that prevented large fishing vessels from passing underneath.
It wasn't clear what could have caused of the collapsing of the 21 year old bridge but according to reports, it was the typhoon ' Mitag ' packing a maximum wind if 162 khp that swept the northeastern part of Taiwan on Monday afternoon could have damage the bridge's supports.
The President of Taiwan Tsai Lng-Wen hoped that the all government agencies would keep the number of deaths and injuries as low as possible.
The Nanfangao bridge in Suao, Yilan is the the only single - span arch bridge that is supported by cable and the second one of it's kind in the world.

2015 Family Taiwan Vacation Day 4 - 27.11.2015
The journey from Tainan(台南) to Kaohsiung(高雄) was a quick one, approximately an hour or so. We visited Qijin(旗津) which is famous for its fishing port and sandy beaches, before returning to city area to visit an art district(驳二艺术特区) converted from an old port warehouse area, and Xizi Bay(西子湾).
After dinner with a friend I had not seen for a long time, we began our long trek back to Taipei, departing Kaohsiung around 7pm to arrive at Taipei around 11pm or so, briefly stopping by at the largest expressway rest area(清水休息站) at Taichung.

Lots of fresh seafood
We love seafood and this is the place to visit for fresh off the boat seafood. One can purchase the fresh seafood and then have the food cooked at the small stalls with dining area at the back of the port. This is the best way to enjoy fresh seafood. they also carry sashimi grade tuna, and some unique fish and fish fat. The grilled salmon was just absolutely delicious.

Breaking News: Bridge collapses in NE Taiwan, over 20 injured ( October 1, 2019)
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Su'ao District Fisheries Association announced today (Oct. 1) that the Nanfang'ao Bridge has collapsed, injuring over 20 people.
At around 9:30 a.m. this morning, the bridge suddenly gave way, injuring more than 20 people, reported UDN. A tank truck was on the bridge when it collapsed, and it ignited after falling into the waterway, spewing smoke into the air.
Video shows the tank truck having almost successfully crossed the bridge when it caved in, and at least three fishing vessels appear to have been crushed beneath. At least nine people from two fishing boats have fallen overboard, and rescue crews are searching for them, reported CNA.
The Yilan County Fire Bureau says that 10 people have been rescued, six have suffered serious injuries, and four have sustained minor injuries, according to UDN. Su'ao Township Mayor Lee Ming-che (李明哲) told the media that six fishermen are still trapped under the bridge.
Lee said that when the bridge collapsed, it crushed three fishing boats with a total of 11 fishermen inside. He said that five have been rescued, but six more remain trapped.
The bridge, which spanned the Nanfang'ao Fishing Port, was completed in 1998 and is the only steel single-arch bridge in Taiwan and the first bifurcated single-arch bridge in Asia. The bridge was 140 meters in length and 15 meters in width.

Bluefin tuna season has begun as Pingtung’s Donggang and Yilan’s Nanfangao both conducted auctions for their first bluefin tuna catches of the year. This fishing boat is bringing the first bluefin tuna of the year into the harbor. It’s a huge bluefin and receives cheers from the audience when it’s hoisted into the air. It’s weighed shortly after ice is moved from its stomach.Coming in at 366.4 kilograms it is the largest bluefin tuna ever brought into Donggang. The bidding on this fish began at NT$1,000 per kilogram. With fierce bidding from local restaurants, the price quickly shot up to around NT$4,500, making both the fishing boat captain and the winning bidder quite happy.Yilan’s Nanfangao fish market also held an auction for the first bluefin tuna of the year. The winning bid quickly exceeded NT$4,000 and eventually ended at NT$6,600 per kilogram. While the per-kilogram price was higher in Yilan, the larger Donggang fish was more expensive, costing a whopping NT$1.68 million.
