City Walls in China | Nanjing City Wall: An Indestructible Miracle
City Walls in China, a bilingual documentary, co-presented by Xinhua News Agency and Nanjing City Wall Protection and Management Center, leads a journey of China's centuries-old culture and heritage through the ancient city #walls.
Nanjing, China Highlights: City Wall, Presidential Palace, Fuzimiao Markets, Sun Yat Sen Mausoleum
While not as well known as Beijing, Nanjing is the former capital of China (during the Ming and Qing dynasties) and is just as superb for cultural attractions. It has its own extraordinary city wall, palaces, temple markets, and mausoleums. And the locals are much friendlier IMHO :) Located just a few hours west of Shanghai, this is a must see for anyone's southern China itinerary.

Nanjing city wall | Nanjing | China(南京瓮城)
Nanjing city wall is a highlighted part of Nanjing attractions and a tentative site of UNESCO world cultural heritage. The existed city wall was built in Ming Dynasty, so it is famously named Ming City Wall. The whole duration of construction is 21 years. And the construction does not follow the traditional layout design for the capital but built in a unique and innovative way. It maximally extends for over 60 kilometers. The Ming city wall of Nanjing is not only the largest city wall in China but also the No.1 in the world. Anciently, it played a role as an ancient military defense installation, and its greatness shows both in its functionality for defense and the construction technology for city wall. Someone takes it as another historic miracle next to Qin Dynasty’s Great Wall.

More than just bricks: Nanjing City Wall | 不仅仅是石头的南京城墙
Nanjing city wall was founded by the first emperor in Ming Dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang, in 1368. The 600-year-old city wall was originally more than 36 km long, and famous for its unique colors built by bricks from different regions.
In order to finish this grand project, the emperor ordered local governments around the capital to contribute bricks. Most of bricks of the city wall have the information from the top governor official down to the brick baker's name. This precise tracking system ensured the quality and speed of the construction. So every brick of the wall has its story behind it. Pretty cool right?

How to Get to Nanjing
南京 Day 2 | Nanjing - JiMing Temple, Xuanwu Lake Park, Ming Dynasty Wall, Yangtze River Bridge
Hello! So today we are spending a little more than half a day at Nanjing as our tour part 2. Since we pretty much went to the main attractions yesterday, today had a lot of local destinations.
We first went to GuLou District looking for an elementary school that my grandmother went to in 1937. The school itself was demolished, of course, but the hospital that she stayed at was still there and is called Ma Lin Hospital.
It was nice to know that this city had that much history and my grandma was here when she was young.
2. JiMing Temple
On our way to Xuanwu Lake Park, we passed JiMing Temple. This temple was larger than expected and was apparently one of the popular temples. You could climb to the tower at the top and get a good view of Nanjing. You could also see ZhongShan Tomb from here.
What I liked about it was that you could walk to the Ming Dynasty Wall from the temple and have a 360 view of Nanjing, including that temple and Xuanwu Lake. It was beautiful. We spent like an hour there just to take photos and walk along the wall. It was my favorite part of the day, or maybe of the two days at Nanjing.
3.XuanWu Park
You can walk down to Xuanwu Lake Park from the wall. These walls are connected since it was built to surround the city. We didn't go in to the Xuan wu Lake Park itself because it would take too much time, but I'm sure you get really nice views with the wall and lake.
5. Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge
First time seeing the Yangtze River, woot woot! You CAN walk along the bridge, but you gotta get on the road far before it becomes the bridge because from where we were, we couldn't get on to the bridge. The elevator brought us to a platform that was above the bridge and we had another almost 360 view at about 10 m above the bridge itself.
Then, unfortunately, we had to leave because we had to catch the train to Hefei.
Nanjing was absolutely beautiful. I loved the weather, the scenic views, and the impressions from dynasties that were preserved over thousands of years. In my opinion, it's a great city to live in. I would love to come back and visit because as you can see from the map, there are so many more places to see in Nanjing and 2 days were definitely not enough!

Nanjing is one of China’s oldest cities and the ancient city wall surrounding the former imperial capital is the world’s longest. It’s an incredible feat of engineering and a proud claim to fame but as the city expands rapidly, its greatest icon is under threat. Conservation efforts are doubled but yet locals are divided on how to protect the heritage landmark. Can Nanjing find the perfect solution to safeguard history for the 21st Century?

Nanjing Fuzimiao Info:
Nanjing Fuzimiao (Chinese: 南京夫子庙) or Fuzimiao (Chinese: 夫子庙; literally: 'Confucian Temple'), is located in southern Nanjing City on banks of the Qinhuai River.
In first year of Jianwu reign of Jin Dynasty (CE 317), Nanking Imperial University was founded, initially on northern bank of Qinhuai River, and in the 3rd year of Xiankang (CE 337) the campus extended to southern bank. Temple of Confucius was firstly constructed in the national school in the 9th year of Taiyuan (CE 384). The place was later destroyed. In the 1st year of Jingyou during Song Dynasty (CE 1034), Confucius Temple was newly constructed on former site of imperial university, and was called Fuzimiao area along with Nanking Fuxue. The place became Imperial University again in 1365 in the early year of Ming Dynasty, and sixteen years later recovered to be the campus of Fuxue. During Qing Dynasty, there were two Xianxue (county schools of Shangyuan and Jiangning) in Fuzimiao area. In the end of Qing a primary school jointly sponsored by counties of Nanjing (Jiangning Fu) was established there. The current buildings date from the 19th century, in Qing Dynasty, with additions made since then. The temple lost all financial support by the state as a result of the revolution of 1911. During the late 1920s to 1931 and again in 1932 it was used as army barracks for troops the KMT regime and left in a dilapidated state. Some halls were used as picture gallery. In 1985 Fuzimiao area was restored.
There is Jiangnan Gongyuan near Fuzimiao Temple. It's the largest imperial examination hall in Ming and Qing dynasties.
Throughout its history, the temple along with the around area has been a place for study of Confucianism. There is a small exhibit of folkart within the temple.

Woman Climbs 70ft Nanjing City Wall to Avoid Admission Fee
Why did a Chinese woman climb up the 70-feet Nanjing City Wall? To avoid paying the admission fee of course.
The pictures of a woman scaling the wall were taken back in 2011, but have been rediscovered by Chinese netizens, and the story is going viral.
Apparent Ma Jei grew up in Nanjing, and was used to climbing to wall, which is a famous local tourist attraction.
Watch Karen Chang and Yi Yang as they discuss what happened to other tourists who tried to follow suit, and why more and more Chinese people are unhappy about rising admission fees for tourists sites around the country.
Old City Wall Nanjing 21Oct 2012
The City Wall of Nanjing was designed by Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang 朱元璋 (r. 1368--1398) after he founded the Ming Dynasty明太祖 (1368--1644) and established Nanjing as the capital 600 years ago. To consolidate his sovereignty and keep out invaders, he adopted the suggestions of advisor Zhu Sheng to build a higher city wall, to collect grains and to postpone the coronation. Then, he started to build the city wall. It took 21 years to complete, and used 200,000 laborers to move 7 million cubic metres of earth. The City Wall of Nanjing was among the largest city walls ever constructed in China, and today it remains in good condition and has been well preserved
