Nanjing Road is mostly a pedestrian street with colorful, bustling markets and international brands. Shanghai has the reputation of a shopping metropolis and is China's most popular shopping destination. Not only since yesterday, Nanjing Road attracts many shopping fans from all over the world. In the evening we got inspired by the city lights.

Nanjing EAST road, the pedestrian part, is very important when you visit SHANGHAI. The street is packed with people, stores, shopping malls, restaurants, cafes and more. I suggest you to go to People Square Subway station exit 19, then walk towards the bund. Its a lot of fun!

The most annoying thing about Shanghai is the endless number of people who come up to you asking if you want a lady massage. As a Westerner, you just can't escape them. Every few seconds another one approaches you. I just wanted to walk quietly down Nanjing Road but instead they came at me repeatedly. So I started videoing them, to show my friends back home how crazy it is. Hope this also helps others see what they can expect when walking along Nanjing Road.

China's premier shopping street, 3.4-mile-long Nanjing Road, starts at the Bund in the east and ends in the west at the junction of Jing'an Temple and Yan'an West Street. Today it is a must-see metropolitan destination attracting thousands of fashion-seeking shoppers from all over the world.
After the Opium War (1839-1842), Shanghai became a treaty port. Nanjing Road was first the British Concession, then the International Settlement. Importing large quantities of foreign goods, it became the earliest shopping street of the city.
Over time, Nanjing Road has been restructured, undergoing significant change. For shopping convenience, its eastern end has an all-weather pedestrian arcade. Big traditional stores no longer dominate the market since modern shopping malls, specialty stores, theatres, and international hotels have mushroomed on both sides of the street.
Today over 600 businesses on the road offer countless famous brands, superior quality, and new fashions. KFC, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, and other world-famous food vendors line both sides of the street. Upscale stores include Tiffany, Mont Blanc, and Dunhill. In addition, approximately a hundred traditional stores and specialty shops still provide choice silk goods, jade, embroidery, wool, and clocks.Open-air bars, abstract sculptures, and lingering sounds from street musicians enhance evening strolls. A trackless sightseeing train provides a comfortable tour of the night-transformed pedestrian street. Flashing neon signs illuminate the magnificent buildings and spangle the night skyline of this lively city.

1. To East Nanjing Road: Take bus 14, 33, 37, 65, 66, 108, 123, 135, 220, 251, 305, 306, 307, 314, 317, 330, 868, 910, 928, 929, 940, Tourism Bus Route 8, Subway Line 10 or Subway Line 2 and get off at East Nanjing Rd. Station.
2. To West Nanjing Road: Take bus 23, 24, 36, 57, 76, 109, 148, 206, 304, 323, 451, 738, 933, 974 or Subway Line 2 and get off at West Nanjing Rd. Station.
3. Take Subway Line 1, Subway Line 2 or Subway Line 8 and get off at People's Square.
4. Take City Sightseeing Bus and get off Nanjing Road.

The History of Nanjing Road can be traced back to the year 1845.[3] At that time it was called Park Lane, which stretched from the Bund to He'nan Road. In 1854, it was extended to Zhejiang Road, and eight years later, once more extended to Xizang Road. In 1862, it was named formally Nanking Road[3] by the Municipal Council, which administered the International Settlement. In Chinese it was usually referred to as the Main Road (大马路). Around 1930 it was a bustling street with at least one reported casino (probably at nr. 181).[citation needed] In 1943 the International Settlement was annulled, and after World War 2 the government changed its name from Nanking Road to East Nanjing Road, meanwhile they also renamed the former Bubbling Well Road West Nanjing Road, and the general name of the two roads became Nanjing Road, comprising five kilometres total length.
At the beginning of the 20th century, eight big department stores were established along the street. A series of franchised stores were also set up at that time.
On 23 August 1937 a bomb was dropped on Nanjing Road by a Chinese plane in an attempt to lighten its load while being pursued by Japanese planes. The bomb hit two department stores, killing 612 people and injuring another 482.[3]
In 2000, as a part of the development plan held by the local government, Nanjing Road was renovated to be a characteristic pedestrian street. The width is about 28 meters and the total length is 1,200 meters, which extends from Middle He'nan Road to Middle Xizang Road.
In 2007, the Jing'an and Huangpu governments agreed to coordinate their policy to enhance the development of Nanjing Road, through a unique launching of a committee. This agreement followed a request by the committee of Champs-Elysees in the perspective of a friendship agreement between both famous streets.

Nanjing Road, as Shanghai's main shopping district, is one of China's most well-known shopping districts and it also claims the title of being the longest shopping district in the world.
Nanjing Road (which usually refers to Nanjing East Road - a pedestrian zone) is flanked by shopping malls and boutiques on both sides and attracts tourists domestically and from around the world. There are many side streets along Nanjing Road which are worth exploring for the wide variety of restaurants.
Nanjing Road is vibrant and bustling with activities and makes a very pleasant stroll, especially at night.

The Bund or Waitan (Chinese: 外滩, literally: 'Outer Beach') is a waterfront area in central Shanghai. The area centres on a section of Zhongshan Road (East No.1 Zhongshan Road) within the former Shanghai International Settlement, which runs along the western bank of the Huangpu River in the eastern part of Huangpu District. The area along the river faces the modern skyscrapers of Lujiazui in the Pudong District. The Bund usually refers to the buildings and wharves on this section of the road, as well as some adjacent areas. From the 1860s to the 1930s, it was the rich and powerful centre of the foreign establishment in Shanghai, operating as a legally protected treaty port.
The Shanghai Bund has dozens of historical buildings, lining the Huangpu River, that once housed numerous banks and trading houses from the United Kingdom, France, the United States, Italy, Russia, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, and Belgium, as well as the consulates of Russia and Britain, a newspaper, the Shanghai Club and the Masonic Club. The Bund lies north of the old, walled city of Shanghai. It was initially a British settlement; later the British and American settlements were combined in the International Settlement. Magnificent commercial buildings in the Beaux Arts style sprang up in the years around the turn of the 20th century as the Bund developed into a major financial centre of east Asia. Directly to the south, and just northeast of the old walled city, the former French Bund (the quai de France, part of the Shanghai French Concession) was of comparable size to the Bund but functioned more as a working harbourside.
By the 1940s, the Bund housed the headquarters of many, if not most, of the major financial institutions operating in China, including the big four national banks in the Republic of China era. However, with the Communist victory in the Chinese civil war, many of the financial institutions were moved out gradually in the 1950s, and the hotels and clubs closed or converted to other uses. The statues of colonial figures and foreign worthies which had dotted the riverside were also removed.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, with the thawing of economic policy in the People's Republic of China, buildings on the Bund were gradually returned to their former uses. Government institutions were moved out in favour of financial institutions, while hotels resumed trading as such. Also during this period, a series of floods caused by typhoons motivated the municipal government to construct a tall levee along the riverfront, with the result that the embankment now stands some 10 metres higher than street level. In the 1990s, Zhongshan Road (named after Sun Yat-sen), the road on which the Bund is centred, was widened to ten lanes. As a result, most of the parkland which had existed along the road disappeared. Also in this period, the ferry wharves connecting the Bund and Pudong, which had served the area's original purpose, were removed. A number of pleasure cruises still operate from some nearby wharves.
In the 1990s, the Shanghai government attempted to promote an extended concept of the Bund to boost tourism, and land value in nearby areas, as well as to reconcile the promotion of colonial relics with the Socialist ideology. In its expanded form, the term Bund (as New Bund or Northern Bund) was used to refer to areas south of the Yan'an Road, and a stretch of riverfront north of the Suzhou River (Zhabei). Such use of the term, however, remains rare outside of tourism literature.
