In Nanjing, China, Mister Chen has given the notion of 'bridge operator' an entirely new meaning. By driving back and forth on his motorbike along the railing of the bridge, he saves many lives of people who are planning to commit suicide. Entirely voluntary.

Passengers and the driver of a bus in China have prevented a woman from committing suicide at the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge.
A surveillance video shows the bus driver stopping his vehicle and grabbing the woman, who was about to jump from the bridge in Nanjing, on 25 October.

This coverage was shot in late July 07 while walking along a bridge spanning the Yangtze river...the air is inhumane and visibility is sad. The train is full of nothing but coal coming into Nanjing.

One man patrols a bridge over the Yangtze River in China, trying to prevent jumpers from committing suicide. His name is Chen Si, the subject of the documentary Angel of Nanjing. I sat down with Co-Director Jordan Horowitz to find out more about the man who has devoted his life to saving others.

Our PicBuster is about an extraordinary hero! Chen Si saved over 300 people lives; the father from the Chinese town of Nanjing works as a courier driver during the week, but what the 48 year old does in his free time is rather overwhelming...
Every Saturday at 6am Chen Si climbs onto his scooter; The road through the dense traffic takes him to Nanjing's Yangtze River Bridge. The bridge is 150 meters high and is not only known for its steel construction; no other bridge will bring more people to death than this one in China.
Chen Si has set himself the task of preserving these people from death. One of his innumerable rescue activities is captured on our PicBuster. When it comes to the lives of others, Chen Si knows no boundaries. He has been patrolling his bridge for 14 years. In China the suicide rate is extremely high resulting in a Chinese life loss every 2 minutes. In the last 13 years Chen Si has managed to save more than 300 people and for this reason people call him the Angel of Nanjing.

The first bridge across the Yangtze, China's longest river, will celebrate 60 years of service in early October. A man who's named after the bridge tells his story of decades of change Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge has brought to his family and to the country.
Filmmakers save suicidal man” Deleted Scene
The filmmakers were forced to intervene when they encountered a suicidal man while filming their documentary, “Angel of Nanjing.
After filming with Chen Si for the day on the Yangtze River Bridge in Nanjing, a man who volunteers to save people from suicide on the bridge, the filmmakers spotted a potential jumper on their way home.
Since Mr. Chen lives on the other side of the bridge and already left for the day, the filmmakers were forced to intervene themselves.
The resulting scene was not included in the film.

The Yangtze River Bridge in Nanjing is the most popular place in the world to commit suicide. For the past 11 years, blue-collar worker Chen Si has been patrolling this bridge every day, watching out for people who've gone there to end their lives. With no formal training, he has saved over 300 people since he began; earning him the nickname the 'Angel of Nanjing'.
Today you met me, your big brother. Even if the sky comes crashing down, your big brother will watch out for you, whispers Chen, his arm round a quivering and visibly shaken old woman. The two stand side by side, motionless, staring into the churning waters beneath them. Finally, Chen leads the woman away from the edge and onto the back of his moped: I can help you...it's all OK.
In September 2003, having seen numerous news reports of people jumping to their deaths from the famous bridge, Chen decided to act. Equipped with nothing more than a handmade sign emblazoned with the words 'Nothing is impossible', Chen patrolled the bridge every weekend, counselling those preparing to jump, talking them down from the edge and saving them from certain death. I wanted to help these people, I wanted to pull them back to life, he explains.
Thirteen years and more than 300 saved lives later, and Chen's voluntary mission is still going strong. Every weekend he travels to the bridge, intercepting and counselling potential jumpers. I thought I should do it for at least a year, but a year later I felt I had really saved a lot of people. But without any help or funding, Chen faces a constant struggle to juggle his humanitarian mission with his own attempts at a normal life. I can't help everyone because I still have to work during the week. I can't be fired or else I won't have the money to complete this mission.
But despite this lack of assistance, the 'Angel of Nanjing' continues to save lives. His phone number is emblazoned along the bridge so that he is always reachable for those in desperate need. A recently-bought apartment in the city also allows for the extended care and housing of recent survivors. He's spoken to me every day since I came out of my depression...I can hold onto life now, recounts one survivor, tearfully.
Almost 300,000 people kill themselves in China every year, accounting for one third of all suicides worldwide. The Angel of Nanjing is a moving portrait of one remarkable man striving to make a difference.
