Nanputuo Temple is a famous Buddhist temple in the coastal area of South-east China,located on Xiamen Island at the foot of the Wulaofeng-Five Old Men-chain of hills,close to the sed and next to Xiamen University.The backdrop of beautiful hills with their mysterious grottoes and their cover of green trees,and the deep blue sea with its sparkling waves in the azure of the sky,provides a delightful environment. Nanputuo Temple was founded in the Tang dynasty. It embodies the long history and culture of South-east China,and is famous as a Temple of a thousand years.

Yesterday I visited the historic Nanputuo temple in Xiamen. I climbed all the way up to enjoy the amazing view.

South Putuo Temple / 南普陀寺 厦门 Xiamen China
Situated at the foot of Wulaofeng (Mountain of Five Old Men) and facing the sea, South Putuo Temple is deemed to be one of the must-go tourist places in Xiamen, Fujian Province. Even if you are not interested in Buddhism, you will find the place a scenic area providing you with a refreshing experience.
This Buddhist temple was once called Puzhao Temple (Universal Grace Temple). It was first built during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and was later destroyed in the warfare during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). During the reign of Qing Emperor Kangxi (1662-1722), a naval general ordered it to be rebuilt into a Buddhist Temple and named it Nanputuo Temple.
The temple covers 30,000 square meters with four main buildings on the north-south axis. The buildings include Devajara Hall (the Hall of Heavenly Kings), Mahavira Hall (Daxiongbaodian), Dabei Hall (the Hall of Great Compassion) and a Pavilion built in 1936 in which Buddhist scriptures, Buddha images from Burma, ivory sculptures and other works of art are stored. The many rooms flanking the main buildings include dormitories, libraries and study rooms for monks.
Devajara Hall: Also called the Hall of Heavenly Kings (Tian Wang Dian), Devajara Hall is the location of the statues of four ferocious Heavenly Kings. In the center of the hall stands a fat Buddha, Maitreya or Milefo. With a broad smile, bare chest and exposed paunch, Maitreya represents the Buddha of the future, also known as the Laughing Buddha.
Mahavira Hall: Mahavira Hall is built in 1921 and features the statues of the Trinity of the Three Ages (Sakyamuni, the Buddha of the Present; Kasyapa, the Buddha of the Past; and Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future), Avalokitesvara (Guanyin Bodhisattva, the Goddess of Mercy) and Avalokitesvara's disciples. most of the attractive murals on the wall depict Buddhist stories and figures from India.

Célèbre temple ancien de Xiamen, le temple du sud de Putuo doit son nom à Guanyin et au Bouddhisattva, ainsi qu’à sa localisation au sud des monts Putuo, l’un des quatre grands lieux bouddhistes de Zhoushan dans la province du Zhejiang.
Au total, le temple s’étend sur environ 25.8 hectares dont un ensemble de bâtiments couvrant une surface de 21,270 mètres carrés.
L’axe principal du sud vers le nord dessert respectivement la salle «des rois célestes», la salle précieuse des «grands héros», celle de «la grande miséricorde» et, enfin, la mansarde des «écritures bouddhistes».
Les couloirs, le clocher et la tour du tambour, les salles «Haihui» et «Puzhao», la bibliothèque «Taixu», les salles de classe de l’institut bouddhiste etc... constituent les annexes réparties des deux côtés.
Tous les bâtiments du temple sont érigés sur un sol montagneux de topographie compliquée dans une atmosphère solennelle et magnifique.
Au cours des dernières années, au sud de la salle des «rois célestes» ont été construits, parmi bien d’autres édifices, un étang de «la vie sans contraintes», deux nouvelles tours de «la longévité», deux pavillons et un étang aux lotus.
Entre les deux étangs, s’élève la tour des «Sept Bouddhas» qui comprend sept représentations de Buddha, comme Sakyamuni et Kasyapa.
Les deux tours de «la longévité» érigées sur 11 niveaux dans le style des constructions bouddhistes du sud de l’Asie, enrichissent le décor du temple.
L’institut bouddhiste du sud de Fujian se situe dans ce temple. Etabli en 1925, c’est le premier institut bouddhiste du pays.
A partir de 1985, l'institut dirige de nouveau une école en installant le collège Yangzheng doté d’un cycle préparatoire scolaire de deux ans et d’un cycle additionnel de recherche également de deux ans dont l’influence est considérable en Chine et en Asie du Sud Est.
