Pisgah National Forest - North Carolina
North Carolina's Pisgah National Forest covers a vast area of 512,758 acres. The forest was created in 1916 after the purchase of 86,700 acres form the estate of George Vanderbilt II who built the famous Biltmore Estate near Asheville. The Blue Ridge Parkway runs through much of the Forest and is a popular tourist destination especially in the fall when the mountains are ablaze with color. • Hoedown by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (

Yellow Mountain Firetower - Nantahala National Forest, NC
Hiking the Yellow Mountain Trail in the Nantahala National Forest to the Firetower for lunch.
An early morning wakeup call from my sister and I'm out the door. Yes, that's right it's a Road Trip day for a hike over in the Cashiers/Highlands, North Carolina area.
The Yellow Mountain is one of the highest mountains in the Highlands Ranger District. The Firetower was built by the Forest Service and the Civilian Corps in 1934. This fire tower was reconstructed in the early 1990's. In 1992 the fire tower was recognized as a National Historic Lookout.
Some claim that this 12+ round trip hike is one of the most difficult hikes in North Carolina. This trail ascends and descends multiple mountain peaks, winds through tunnels of mountain laurel and rhododendron, and scrambles across craggy sections of singletrack.
But the reward is the amazing view from the Firetower and that makes this hike well worth the effort.

Yellow Mountain Lookout Tower - Nantahala National Forest, NC
Yellow Mountain, the tallest peak in the Cowee Mountains at 5,127 feet, features one of the smallest lookout towers in the state. The Yellow Mountain Trail begins at Cole Gap on the east side of the Cullasaja River Gorge in Nantahala National Forest. You'll start at a high elevation and never dip below 4,100 feet, but the distance and elevation gain make it a moderately difficult hike. The trail first crosses Shortoff Mt at 5,020 feet, with one nice view to the southwest. The section through Yellow Mountain Gap is the longest slog for both directions. The lookout tower, built in 1934, is only 7.5 feet off of the ground. The open rock on the south side of the summit provides outstanding views. You can see Panthertown Valley to the east, with Toxaway Mt and Chimneytop Mt most notable to the southeast. Whiteside Mt is behind Shortoff Mt due south with Satulah Mt behind to the right. Rabun Bald is the big conical peak to the southwest with the Fishhawk Mt massif in the foreground. In the video, I referred to this conical peak multiple times as Standing Indian. After looking at the map, I think it is Rabun Bald but I'm not 100% sure.
Hike was 12.5 miles in 5 hours and 40 minutes.

DREW & AMANDAS 2016 WATERFALL ROADTRIP VACATION! WOOHOO!
These videos are from our road trip through the mountains of Western NC; including Brevard, Asheville, Sylva, Highlands, Hendersonville, Waynesville The Great Smokey Mountains, Pisgah National Forest, Dupont National Forest, and Nantahala National Forest. This was a 5 day trip with a different camp spot each night. Some of the places we visited and camped include Standing Indian Campground, Bridal Veil Falls , Mooney Falls , Dry Falls, Hooker Falls, Callasaja Falls, Triple Falls and much much more.
About Mooney Falls: THE LOCAL SCOOPMooney Falls cascades over a series of rocks making this is a nice spot to visit especially if staying in the Standing Indian area at either Standing Indian Campground or Hurricane Creek Primitive Campground & Horse Camp. We suggest pairing this waterfall with one of the area's multiple outdoor activities. Close by is Laurel Falls & Trail, Pickens Nose Trail, Albert Mtn Trail & Fire Tower along with many other foot trails, horse trails, fishing and biking opportunities. You and your family can easily enjoy the majority of these activities in one day, but we recommend splitting them up especially if you are camping for more than a day or two. Take your time with them, and enjoy the peaceful settings this area offers.

Rainbow Falls, North Carolina, Nantahala National Forest -- DJI Drone Footage
This was an awesome shorter hike (4.2 miles) with great views, plenty of shade, nice pit stops on the Horse Pasture River and a crazy powerful waterfall! The Falls themselves are amazing and some that I will visited again! It can be pretty slippery to get down below the falls, so exercise caution and use proper footwear.
I must also say that there is a lot of confusing information on the internet about this and Turtleback Falls. Both are very close together and I see them and pictures exchange a ton. I believe this to be Rainbow and Turtleback is one you can slide down.

Best of....The North Carolina Mountains - Pisgah National Forest HD 720P
A Trip through part of the North Carolina mountains. Including the Pisgah National Forest and Linville Gorge.

Protecting North Carolina’s Pisgah-Nantahala Forests (Extended Cut)
Pisgah and Nantahala are the two largest national forests in North Carolina. They are also the busiest, drawing an estimated 4.6 million people a year. How those public lands are managed matters greatly to the hikers, hunters, paddlers, anglers, mountain bikers, timber companies, and local communities who use the forest.
In the fall of 2015, a diverse group of stakeholders came together to identify areas of agreement around critical resource issues related to the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests’ plan revision, which will direct management of the forests for the next 10-15 years. These forest users collaborated with the Forest Service to develop management recommendations that would provide protection for special places, enhance varied recreational uses, and manage for restorative purposes where needed to meet the needs of game and fishery habitats.
