Nantahala means land of the noon day sun. The wall of the gorge are so steep, the sun doesn't shine into the gorge until mid-day. It's a beautiful river offering excellent whitewater fun and trout fishing.The North Carolina state record brown trout was caught in the river...about 23 lbs. You can hire a fishing guide to learn more tips and tricks. Definitely watch out when the water releases from the dam....it's very cold and very dangerous/swift water. The Paddle Inn outfitters have been around more than 40 years. They offer guided rafting/kayak trips and rentals.

Protecting North Carolina’s Pisgah-Nantahala Forests (Extended Cut)
Pisgah and Nantahala are the two largest national forests in North Carolina. They are also the busiest, drawing an estimated 4.6 million people a year. How those public lands are managed matters greatly to the hikers, hunters, paddlers, anglers, mountain bikers, timber companies, and local communities who use the forest.
In the fall of 2015, a diverse group of stakeholders came together to identify areas of agreement around critical resource issues related to the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests’ plan revision, which will direct management of the forests for the next 10-15 years. These forest users collaborated with the Forest Service to develop management recommendations that would provide protection for special places, enhance varied recreational uses, and manage for restorative purposes where needed to meet the needs of game and fishery habitats.

Fall Reflections - Fly Fishing the Nantahala river North Carolina
Fall Reflections is the latest film of Wild Fly Productions. Scottie and David headed up to the Nantahala river for a day trip huntig for those pocket water fish. Dry dropper rigs, streamer patterns and nymph rigs were all thrown in search of hungry trout. This film highlights the Beautiful colors of fall and it's Reflection on the beauty of the fish. In the North Carolina mountains there is always a 1-2 week window where the colors are outstanding and in this video we got the chance to hit that window.

Nantahala Cascades Kayaking - 250 CFS - Bryson City, NC
After a 3 day drive straight across the United States, from California to North Carolina, I finally arrived in the Southeast! I met up with Tad Dennis, and our original plan was to paddle the Green River Narrows, but overnight with a load of rain, the Green was at 22 inches, and the Cascades was in! We decided to leave the Green for the following week, and drove just up the road from the NOC to the Cascades on the Upper Nantahala!
The Cascades are 0.7 miles of easy to lap, high quality class IV-V whitewater. Tad and I did three laps, simply hiking up the highway after taking out.
Tad and I agreed that the 250 CFS that we had was more or less the minimum we would do the Cascades at. It was a bit rocky, and I ended up getting pinned for a few minutes in one of the rapids due to some shallow rocks. Guess that was good introduction to the Southeast!
You can read a write up of the run below, and although they call many of the rapids Class V on American Whitewater, at these levels, none of the rapids felt like Class V.

The River rises near the border of Georgia and North Carolina, close to the Southern Nantahala Wilderness and the Appalachian Trail. It empties into the Little Tennessee River at Fontana Lake.
The word Nantahala comes from the Cherokee language and means Land of the Noonday Sun. The river runs through a narrow and steep gorge where in some areas the sun only reaches the ground when it is directly overhead during the middle of the day.
