Lancaster Crew Memorial Unveiling Ceremony Colchester Essex U.K. 25th April 2013
On Thursday 25th April 2013 a small memorial was unveiled in Colchester Essex England honouring seven airmen who died in a RAF Lancaster crash near the town in 1944.
On Tuesday 25th April 1944 Lancaster UM-K2 serial No. DV 177 based at RAF Wickenby in Lincolnshire was returning to its' base from an operation to Karlsruhe, Germany.
As the crew were probably thinking that the worst was over and would soon be home, passing over East Anglia, everything changed in an instant. A German Night Fighter attacked the aircraft causing severe damage and it is believed killing the Tail Gunner, 22 year old Ernest Fancy, RAF.
The attack occurred at 03.58 a.m. and the aircraft began to burn on the left hand side, fuel tanks ruptured. The Pilot, 22 year old Canadian Murray McPherson, altered course and eventually attempted an emergency landing at USAF base Boxted, five miles outside Colchester.
German records state that the attack occurred 5-15 km south of Diss in Norfolk. RAF official records imply that the attack occurred over Colchester. There is substantial information in the German record whereas the RAF report has considerably less information. The return trip from Karlsruhe would have meant that the aircraft would have been near Diss. Time may tell which record is correct, who knows. A heading towards Colchester was obviously in the wrong direction for Wickenby in Lincolcnshire.
Several other airfields were passed on the way to Colchester where a landing attempt could have been made. We can only speculate that there were considerable problems on board the aircraft after the attack and possibly it was not very controllable.
Once the aircraft came near to Colchester several witnesses first heard then saw the aircraft pass overhead. It was flying extremely low, maybe at 60 feet, all four engines were working and 'screaming' loudly, making little headway. The bomber appeared to be making left turns only. Fire extended from the left wing along the fuselage and beyond the tail.
The Americans on the airfield at Boxted tried to help the stricken crew as best they could. That morning there was quite a lot of ground mist and they decided to take an unusual step of lighting up the flare path even though this could have exposed the base to an attack.
The witnesses spoken to as the memorial was arranged to this day never forgot what they saw that morning and even today are saddened by what happened.
Eventually as the Pilot attempted to line up with the main runway at Boxted he must have carried out a right turn and this is when it is thought tragedy struck. The bomber went out of control and crashed on the periphery of the airfield at 04.10 a.m. No one survived this devastating impact. The crew were barely a minute away from reaching that main runway.
On the ground there were some remarkable lucky escapes. A mobile receiver unit, part of radar station which was based on the back of a truck had just shut down a few minutes before the plane came down. Two American servicemen had just walked away unscathed. Also, in the same area of the airfield which was site seven, there was a cluster of Nissen huts. Fragments of one of the aircrafts' engines pierced one of the huts and passed between the bunks of sleeping servicemen.
67 years later, on hearing local man David Seaborns' account of what he saw that morning, a group of friends decided to see if they could mark the crash site with a small memorial. Eventually this was accomplished 69 years after the event.
Attempting to trace relatives was the right thing to do. This took 18 months to complete and one or more relatives were traced for each of the seven airmen.
Thirty or so relatives attended the ceremony. Some travelled from Canada and Australia, and all had journeyed considerably to be there.
The ceremony was marked at the beginning by a flyover by an operational RAF Apache attack helicopter as a mark of respect from todays Royal Air Force from nearby Wattisham and at the conclusion the Battle of Britain memorial Flights Lancaster flew over carrying out three low level passes. Days prior to the ceremony the weather had been variable. On the actual day the sun shone gloriously to such an extent that some people found they were suffering from the heat. The following day the weather returned to much the same normal Spring time conditions.
The seven airmen were at last honoured by the people of Colchester in what had been a memorable occasion for all involved.
Some of relatives have kept in contact with each other since the memorial was unveiled.
There has been newsletter write ups completed by the Harwich Royal British Legion Brass Band who provided the musical accompaniment for us at the ceremony and also Jordanhill school in Glasgow. The British Flight Engineer James Mayger attended Jordanhill and much later two nieces also went to the same school. They both remember laying flowers around the school memorial on the anniversary of the crash.
