Dragon Boat Festival Highlights
Today is the Dragon Boat Festival as we take you around Taiwan to see local celebrations. Waking the PangolinOn Taichung's Nantun Old Street, an old folk custom is the awakening of pangolins. Farmers joined together to wear wooden clogs to awaken these animals which help farmers by tilling the soil looking for bugs. The custom has continued for nearly one hundred years and is part of the annual Dragon Boat Festival celebration. Lin Chia-lung, DPP candidate for Taichung Mayor, said that if he were elected, he would help the event draw more than 10,000 people to help promote this native folk custom. Large ZongziTainan's Masago Beach hosted a special activity for Dragon Boat Festival inviting artists to create a 3 meter sand sculpture in the form of a zongzi. Also, 500 free zongzi were given

Here is the English news article:
Many years ago, Nantun District, Taichung was a bustling village with over 1,200 homes. Most of the residents in the village were former soldiers who were given temporary housing by the Government.
However, as the years passed, most people moved away except for one elderly man, Huang Yung-fu. The government started to demolish the empty village to sell to developers until there were only 11 homes left. Then, Huang received a letter from the government ordering him to leave.
He had no family and no where to go. It was the only home he had known for forty years. So, when he received the letter, at the age of 86, he picked up a paintbrush and started painting.
Every morning, for the last 10 years, Huang has woken up at 4:00 am and slowly painted the drab cement walls, pavement and windows with playful murals in bright colours. He started with a little bird in his bungalow, then some cats, people and aeroplanes. His colourful creations began to spill outside and onto the village’s abandoned buildings and streets.
One night, in 2010 as Huang painted under the moonlight, a student from a nearby university discovered the elderly artist and learned of his lonely battle to defend the village from the government’s bulldozers with a paintbrush. He took some photographs of his work and started a fundraising campaign to purchase as much paint for Huang as possible and launched a petition to protest the demolition. People were amazed at the artist’s passion and he became known as “Grandpa Rainbow”. After a few months, Taichung’s mayor had received 80,000 emails from citizens asking him to preserve the village. It worked and in October 2010, the mayor ordered the remaining 11 buildings, streets and surrounding areas to be preserved as a public park.
Since saving the village, Huang, now 96 years old, still wakes up at 4:00am every day to paint the village. Every year more than one million people come to see him and his colourful village. He says, “There are many things that I can’t do anymore, but I can still paint. It keeps me healthy, and adding a little colour can turn something old into something beautiful.”

Driver Hits Scooter Rider with Door then Crashes Himself
This scooter rider was filtering through the streets in the Nantun District of Taichung, Taiwan. Suddenly, a driver on the side of the road got out of his car and hit the scooter rider with his door. To add insult to injury, the driver then tried to help the man lift his scooter off the ground and accidentally pulled on the throttle, sending him and the scooter flying into the back of another parked car.

Rainbow Village Taichung The Most Colorful Town In Taiwan
#AirpazGlobal102 #AirpazGlobalStartTravelingNow
Rainbow Village is one of the most surprising Taichung attractions.
Rainbow Village used to be a shelter for nationalist soldiers,
Given to them as gratitude for their service to the nation.
One of the last village residents is Mr.Huang.
One day he started to paint the empty and dying village.
He painted animals, dolls, airplanes, manga characters with vibrant colors, filling the walls and the alleys.
The 92 year old man tactics eventually saved the village from being torn down.
Initially, no one took notice of these colorful graffiti,
Until students of the nearby Lingtung University discovered the paintings.
Roaming around Rainbow Village might take you only 15-20 minutes, it is that small.
Access to the place has always been completely free.
Recently a small souvenir shop has opened that is run by Grandpa’s grandson.
They're sells quite beautiful hand-made souvenirs based on Grandpa’s artwork. Once you are in Taichung, the easiest way to go to Rainbow Village is by taxi
Taxi drivers may not know the place as Rainbow Village so try showing them this address:
No. 34, Lane 56, Chunan Rd, Nantun District

RAINBOW VILLAGE TAICHUNG TAIWAN (TRAVEL_VLOG)
RAINBOW VILLAGE
NANTUN DISTRICT, TAICHUNG TAIWAN
Using the infinite imaginations, beautiful colors and vivid lines, a 97-year-old retired soldier has started painting on a piece of paper, a wall, a house and finally a village. It is the Rainbow Village, currently the hottest scenic spot in the central Taiwan.'
The artwork of the area was created by former soldier, Huang Yung-Fu, who was born in Taishan county, Guangdong province in 1924. The eldest of four brothers and two sisters Huang's artistic talents were revealed early on.[1] He began painting houses in his settlement, now known as Rainbow village, to save them from demolition. Over the years his colourful artwork, which includes birds, animals and people, has spread over the remaining houses in the village, which once contained 1,200 homes.
Huang, originally from Hong Kong, joined the National Revolutionary Army (NRA) in 1946 to fight People's Liberation Army in mainland China during the Chinese Civil War. In 1949, many of the defeated NRA troops followed their leader, Chiang Kai-shek, as he fled to Taiwan. Soldiers were given temporary housing in hundreds of dedicated military villages across the island.[2] Eventually, some settlements became permanent and many veterans and their families were left to spend much of their lives in them.
Many houses became run down and developers began buying up the land for redevelopment. Residents were offered compensation or new housing to move but Huang remained even after his neighbours had left and only 11 homes remained. Bored with being the only person left in the village he began painting a bird inside his home and his artwork grew from there.
Local university students discovered Huang's work and campaigned to save the village. Authorities eventually agreed that it should be preserved and hopefully become a designated cultural area. It is a popular tourist attraction, along with nearby Art street pulling in more than a million visitors annually, mostly from Asia.

The 96 Years Old Who Saved a Village
Rainbow Grandpa Artist HUANG YONG FU
The Rainbow Village (Chinese: 彩虹眷村; pinyin: Cǎihóng Juàncūn) is a street art in Nantun District, Taichung, Taiwan. It was created by former soldier, Huang Yung-Fu, who was born in Taishan county, Guangdong province in 1924.
The eldest of four brothers and two sisters Huang's artistic talents were revealed early on.[1] He began painting houses in his settlement, now known as Rainbow village, to save them from demolition. Over the years his colourful artwork, which includes birds, animals and people, has spread over the remaining houses in the village, which once contained 1,200 homes. wiki
After seeing the story of the founder, aged 96 old man Mr. WONG who still painting everyday, presented at the spot and well received by the tourist, you will find it very amazing and touching.
Small Place, you can explore within 20 minutes but the message of the artwork moved people who come and visited the village.
The reviews warned me this village was small but I was still surprised.
My first reaction was, it seems like a roadside attraction that could be picked up and moved when the circus is in town.”
But in the end it was really beautiful when I went inside. met the artist painter and it was humbling and a bit overwhelming to see the story and the beauty. I got some great photos, walked around for a bit and had some coffee. All in all was happy I saw it in the faces of the visitors, and worth the visit if you have time.
