#15 Nanyao Temple | Changhua City | Taiwan
Nanyao temple is famous because it has influences from Chinese, Japanese and Modern culture. It's located 2km South from Changhua train station and is one of the stops on the Mazu Pilgrimage. In the center you can see the hall of Doric columns, baroque-style decor and Japanese shrines. The sanctum was built in 1920s and honours the bodhisattva of mercy, Guanyin.

Running in Taiwan: Hills of Changhua (Part 1)
This is the first in two parts, where JC and I venture out of the concrete jungle to the nearly hills. We typically meet up somewhere on the Ba Gua Mountain ridge in Changhua County and hit the asphalt hiking trails as well as some stair networks.
We provide some tips for running in the heat of Taiwan, as well as how to plan your route. We like to make loops where one or both runners has the chance to opt out and cut their run short if they have time commitments or just different mileage goals. Two very important features of the loops are access to liquid refreshment (if we run out) and restrooms. Drinks shops exist in any populated area in Taiwan and there are lots of beautiful temples where we can take quick breaks.
In Part 2, we run to the Four Faces Buddha (Thai Temple) in Changhua. Please check it out, like and subscribe to Runners' Garden! Thanks for watching!
NOTE: Mom, If you are reading this: We almost NEVER see any snakes! :)

STORYLINE
Worshippers crowded inside Longshan Temple in downtown Taipei at the stroke of midnight on Sunday to celebrate the beginning of the Lunar New Year.
The celebration is traditionally highlighted by a religious ceremony to honour the gods of heaven and earth, the gods of the household and family ancestors.
It's believed that praying on New Year's eve will welcome good fortune and that by staying up, evil spirits can be fended off.
The Chinese New year is a traditional time of great celebration and family get-togethers over large, festive meals.
Families clean their houses to symbolically sweep away bad luck and to make way for good luck in the new year.
January 23 is the first day of the Year of the Dragon.
The dragon is the fifth sign of the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac that is used across Asia.

Footage:Police, goddess Mazu worshippers clash in Taiwan
Worshippers following a statue of the Chinese goddess Mazu in Taiwan clashed with police on Sunday. It happened when the police built a wall with their own bodies to forbid the crowd of worshippers – who queued overnight – from mobilizing, in Zhanghua county. The police said they were concerned by possible safety problems with the rowdy crowd, such as a potential stampede. The police and the worshippers eventually reached a peaceful solution.
