I Love Yu is a combination of public bath and art installation house (sento), where visitors can experience bathing in the artwork. The facility was built to give communication place for islander and visitors. The facility was designed by Japanese artist Otake Shinro whose scrapbook like style incorporates recycled objects from all over Japan. Otake also created the Haisha art house, which is part of the Art House Project on Naoshima.
Bathing at the I Love Yu bath house is a intersting experience. The baths are designed and finished mostly in plain white tiles surrounding a collage of erotica on the floor of the bath. While soaking in the hot waters, visitors can view the brightly painted glass ceiling, large tile murals depicting ama (female abalone divers) on the walls and an elephant statue at the center of the room.
The art is ever present throughout the rest of the bath house as well with video displays, painted ceramic paintings, posters, and collages decorating the changing rooms, toilets, entranceway and the entire exterior of the building. The bath sells lovely I Love Yu goods and toiletries such as towels, shampoo and body soap. Like the admission tickets, they are purchased through a ticket machine next to the entrance.
Schedule & cost
Hours: 14:00 to 21:00 (from 10:00 on weekends and holidays)
Closed: Mondays (or following Tuesday if Monday is a national holiday)

Japan Vlog • Part 2 • Naoshima, Michelin-Star Instant Noodles, Foot Sap Sheets
Hey everyone! I'm back with part 2 of our Japan vlogs. We took a quick 2-night side trip to Naoshima, which is a beautiful island filled with modern art. It was amazing, and I'd love to go back one day to visit the other islands. While in Naoshima, Hubby and I found some Michelin-Star instant noodles. I wish we had brought a bigger luggage so we could bring some back, but alas they were too bulky. Next time! We also tried foot sap sheets, which Hubby saw people buying up in boxes. Have any of you tried these before? Thanks so much for watching! x

Architecture and Artwork by Otake Shinro
Haisha (literally dentist), once the home and office of a local dentist, has been completely transformed by artist Shinro Ohtake into a sculptural or graphic artwork some of which can be viewed from different floors of the two storied house. The artworks include a replica of the Statue of Liberty. Otake also designed the I Love You bath house. Dreaming Tongue, the title of the artwork, represents the process of calling to mind a dream from the tastes and aromas of a morsel in one's mouth.

Honmura Port town of Naoshima has the largest concentration of Art Houses and installations and even just strolling the streets is so fascinating, I loved the big flags at entrances flowing in the wind and how everyone is part of this huge Art project. And how wonderful that it helps attract tourists, fulfilling the initial goal of the Setouchi Triennale to revitalize this remote rural areas and make them sustainable and fun to be here!!!

Japan Trip: More than a Typical Onsen Town at the Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, Nagano 63
Japan Trip: More than a Typical Onsen Town at the Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, Nagano 63
Togura Kamiyamada Onsen (戸倉上山田温泉), located in Nagano Prefecture between Karuizawa and Nagano City, is a hot spring (onsen) town with a unique twist. The onsen town is situated on a valley by the banks of the Chikuma River at the foot of a small but noteworthy mountain fortress. The sulfuric waters is good Being located near the Zenkoji Temple in Nagano, the town is often used as a stopover by the temple visitors. However, the uniqueness of this onsen town is Tyler Lynch, a tall American who runs one of the local ryokan (onsen inn). He has helped make this town more accessible to foreign tourist, giving Togura Kamiyamada Onsen a foreign advantage over other towns. For example, the town distributes good English maps with restaurant listings and menus, making Togura Kamiyamada Onsen very accessible to foreign tourists.
Tyler’s wife, Mari’s family owns the family ryokan Kamesei Ryokan. Tyler moved here in 2005 to run the family business with his wife. The Kamesei Ryokan is a typical ryokan with traditional tatami rooms, a nice inner garden with pond, and pleasant hot spring baths. However, guests at the ryokan have the unique opportunity to learn about Japanese culture, ryokan customs and the onsen town from Tyler and his insider knowledge.
Another advantage are the activities Tyler can arrange for his guests. Difficult for non-Japanese speaking visitors, Tyler can arrange activities such as traditional workshops at the local tea, miso and textile shops or early-morning Zen meditation at a local temple.
Togura Kamiyamada Onsen has seven public baths and a few free footbaths. Most of the public baths operate late into the night, charging from 250 to 650 yen per visit. Guests spending the night here stroll down the streets in their yukata and geta clogs, a typical sight in an onsen town. The yukata and geta clogs are usually providing the ryokan where the guests are staying.
Visitors will find a small population of geisha who continue to entertain visitors at Togura Kamiyamada Onsen. Visitors wishing to view a geisha performance can make arrangements through their ryokan. The geisha entertains though dance and music performances, with drinking games and small talk in Japanese. They are usually hired in pairs for 2-hour periods for 18,000 yen per geisha. However, foreign tourists without Japanese language skills may opt to hire them in half-hour segments for their services.
On the mountain west of Togura Kamiyamada Onsen is Aratojo Castle. Aratojo Castle is one of the many hundreds of small fortresses built on mountain tops across Japan during the age of warring states (1467-1568). During this time period, castles were built purely for defense. Like all other fortresses of its kind, Aratojo was once destroyed in the past. However, it is now the only one in Japan that has been fully reconstructed in the recent years. The unique stronghold consists of wooden fortifications, stone walls and some simple buildings. Being on a mountain top, visitors can view over the Chikuma River and the town.
Aratojo Castle
Hours: 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry at 16:30)
Closed: December 29th to January 3rd
Admission: 300 yen
Visitors can view the huge kanji characters spelling out the name of Togura Kamiyamada Onsen on the side of the mountain a few hundred meters down from the castle. The sign is similar to that of the Hollywood Sign in California, USA. From the town, visitors can see the sign clearly. And the sign is light up at night, letting all known the town they are in.

Japan Trip: History and Healing at Bessho Onsen Town, Nagano59 Moopon
Bessho Onsen (別所温泉), located just outside of central Ueda City in Nagano Prefecture, is a small onsen (hot spring) resort town. Get Lost in Setouchi, Japan: Travel Guide
Series Overview: Though Japan may be a small country, there is so much history, art, adventure, luxury and culinary experiences in each one of its regions! I am so glad that I spent 2 weeks exploring the Setouchi Region. We were able to marvel at the beauty of the Seto Inland Sea from seaplanes and catamarans and as we crossed impressive bridges to the many islands. The islands themselves were home to so much culture and traditional craft, not to mention breathtaking mountains, rivers, valleys and gorges.
Don't miss Hiroshima's A Bomb dome or an onsen--my favorite was in Arima! Stop in Kobe to try out the best beef of your life, and while there, check out the sake breweries in Nada to learn more about this national drink. Miyajima Island is another highlight with its torii gate and Itsukushima shrine, as well as its friendly deer!
And of course, staying at ryokan, especially one in Kurashiki, or a kominka in the Iya Valley, will leave you with incredible photos and memories.
There's so much more to see and say about this region, but I'll let you watch this series overview as I think that explains it the best!
