Naoshima Art Island | Japan
Naoshima Island situated in the Seto Inland Sea of Southern Japan has been known as the Art Island in the last 20 years.
Benesse Corporation started investing in art on the island in the 90's- now, there are a couple of very interesting museums as well as installations grouped around three main areas: Miyanoura port, Honmura port, and Benesse House Museum.
We visited Naoshima as a day trip from Okayama.
HERE IS OUR ITINERARY:
- Arrived by ferry to Miyanoura port.
- Rented electric bikes in the port.
- Visited Yayoi Kusama's Red Pumpkin and Sou Fujimoto's
Naoshima Pavilion.
- Drove to Lee Ufan Museum- were stopped by the robot. :)
- Drove further to Benesse House Museum. If you are going by bikes, head to the second entrance as it is much closer to the museum.
- Visited Benesse House Museum and had lunch on the terrace overlooking the Seto Inland sea (highly recommendable, even just for a drink!).
- Visited the Outdoor works on the beaches below the museum (Yayoi Kusama's Iconic Yellow Pumpkin, Niki de Saint Phalle's colorful animals etc.).
- Drove to the Honmura port.
- Visited cloud- shaped Port Terminal and Bicycle garage by SANAA studio.
- Drove back to Miyanoura port.

The Benesse House is a modern art museum and resort hotel located the southern coast of Naoshima Island. The complex is the centerpiece of the Benesse Corporation's art facilities on the island. It consists of four buildings: the Museum, Oval, Park and Beach, all designed by well-known architect Ando Tadao. Each building features its own unique artwork and guest rooms.
The main attraction of the Benesse House is its modern art museum, built on a hill overlooking the sea. This museum shows work created by many different artists from both Japan and abroad, that was inspired by the natural surroundings of Naoshima and the architecture on the island. Hotel guest staying at the Museum and Oval buildings can enjoy 24 hour access to the museum.
In addition to the art displayed in the museum and in the guest rooms, there are nearly twenty art pieces placed on the lawns and beaches around the Benesse House, including the famous pumpkin. Many of these can be found along the cliffs and shore below the museum, and have been specially designed to integrate into the natural surroundings in which they are placed.
The Benesse House has other facilities including restaurants, cafes, shops and a spa that are open to staying guests as well as day visitors. Hotel guests have the added privileges of exclusive restaurants and after-hours access to the museum. The Benesse House is the top level accommodation on the island, and room rates start from about 25,000 yen per night.

Japan Trip: Delicious Foods in Marugame, Kagawa Prefecture, Shikoku 35 Moopon
Japan Trip: Delicious Foods in Marugame, Kagawa Prefecture, Shikoku 35 Moopon
Visitors to Kagawa Prefectures in Shikoku, will want to visit Marugame (丸亀), the second largest city in the Prefecture. Marugame is a port city in the western part of Kagawa Prefecture and includes many of the Shiwaku Islands located in the Seto Inland Sea. Many of the Shiwaku Islands are hosts to the famous Setouchi Treiennale, a contemporary art festival with venues on several of the islands of the Seto Inland Sea.
Marugame has many points of interests for its visitors. For young visitors, we recommend the New Reoma World, an amusement park filled with rides and fun for the whole family. The Marugame Castle, one of the twelve remaining “original” castles of Japan, was constructed on a hill to “control” the city it governed. The Mimoca, Marugame Genichiro Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art, houses fascinating objects and other art pieces. A famous round fan or uchiwa museum is also in this city. The people of Marugame originally made these hand-held round fans for the pilgrims who came to Shikoku to visit the temples.
Visitors can enjoy all the delicious delights this city has to offer. From udon, which is famous throughout Kagawa Prefecture to Marugame grilled chicken on the bone, there is something for everyone here. Many locals love the sanuki cow which is used as toppings for udon, or the beef is available in lunchboxes in this region. Fruits are also popular, with peaches being a favorite.
Visitors will find this city located west of the Seto Ohashi, the bridge connecting Shikoku to Honshu, fascinating. In addition to the areas mentioned above, there are an array of restaurant and shops to explore here.

#SetouchiTriennale2019 Fukutake House Asia Art Platform
Déjà Vu | the Living Heritage
Date: Summer—19 July-25 Aug, 2019⠀
Venue: FUKUTAKE HOUSE, Fukuda, Shodoshima, Kagawa, JAPAN⠀
HKAC participates in Setouchi Triennale for the third time to conduct cross-cultural dialogues with international artists and visitors, and explore issues such as identity and globalization, by means of multidisciplinary collaborations in contemporary arts, on the island of Shodoshima.
The Setouchi Triennale takes place in the picturesque setting of the Seto Inland Sea. Its theme is the Restoration of the Sea, and it aims to revitalize the island communities that once thrived in this beautiful natural environment and to transform the region into a Sea of Hope. The Seto Inland Sea has been a vital transportation route since ancient times. Ships plying its waters stopped at different islands where their crew passed along the latest cultural and lifestyle trends. The distinctive local cultures that emerged through such interactions can still be found today.
In this edition, the showcase takes the title Déjà Vu | the Living Heritage, with special focus on the exchange of discourse on “intangible cultural heritage” (ICH); in which HKAC’s presentation will feature one stage-set Chinese traditional costume installation artwork by the renowned Hong Kong costume designer, Ms. Mandy Tam, assisted by two alumni of Hong Kong Art School (HKAS), Ms. Lit Wing-hung and Mr. Chung Siu-fung, plus the acrobatic-kungfu performing art piece by Hong Kong choreographer, Mr. Hugh Cho and the TS Crew. All participating artists also exchange their artistic ideas with the local residents of Fukuta area through residency programmes and workshops. The project is aimed at recollecting ICH as the crystallisation of valuable human experience that connects with the past, the identity, and more importantly, the accumulative wisdom in problem-solving, aestheticism and sensibility about the nature, in order to shed new insights for future creativity and innovations.
