24 October 2016
We visited #Shangri-la in our #China #Tour in October 2016. Shangri-la became famous after the novel Lost Horizon of James Hilton. This story tells how 4 British survived after an airplane crash. They found a Tibetan Monastery called Shangri-la. The book has been made into a movie in 1937 and again in 1973. Since is meaning ‘Paradise on Earth’ or ‘Garden of Eden’, a lot of places in the Himalaya claimed to be Shangri-la. Since 2001 the #Chinese town Zhongdian is official renamed in Shangri-la.
In Shangri-la you can’t miss the Giant Prayer Wheel. You need 20 persons to turn it around. We did it. The Giant Prayer wheel is located near a nice small #Tibetans Buddhist Monastery. On the other side of Shangri-la you find the largest Tibetan Buddhist Monastery outside #Tibet. It is called Ganden Sumtsenling Monastery. Instead of visiting the Ganden Sumtsenling Monastery we make a bike ride around the Napa Lake. The 40km tour was very nice. Especially when we decided to bike through the Napa Grasslands between the grazing yaks.
In the evening the people of Shangri-la were folk dancing on the square in the old town. There I have recorded the music used in this movie. Unfortunately the old town of Shangri-la burnt down in January 2014. It has been rebuild in the old state and looks great.

Are foreigners welcome in China? Shangrila to Dali travel vlog..
Visiting Shangrila / ZhongDian in YunNan province, the second biggest buddhist temple in the world after the Potala Palace in Tibet, songzanlin monastery, also the Napa Lakes Grasslands. then headin goff to Dali to checkout the scenery and also a bit of the night life.
Under the influence of alcohol, I ask the question: Are foreigners welcome in China? Obviously depends who you ask, but this isn't South Korea or Pakistan nor Germany, things are nuanced but overall positive.
A glimpse of Lake Napa Wetlands in northwest #Yunnan
Lake Napa Nature Reserve, lying in the valley of a high mountain plateau situated about 3266m above sea level and covering 31.25 sq km, is located near #ShangriLa City, in Yunnan Province's northwestern corner.
Lake Napa is surrounded to the east, west and north by tall mountains. Most of the Reserve is marshy wetland that becomes dry from fall through winter. From spring through summer, the area again becomes an expansive wetland that attracts countless flocks of birds.
It is one of the most majestic places in the world for horseback trekking. Here flocks of yaks, horses and sheep can be seen grazing here, and an occasional Tibetan shepherd is also spotted.
Napahai Valley and Lake sort of
Over 10,000 feet high Tibetan mountain valley full of animals running free like they are supposed to be untill of course they are locked up at night but you know.

6 October – 5 November 2016
We started our #China Tour in #Beijing. In Beijing we visited the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven. After hiking the Great Wall of China we visited the Terra Cotta Army in Xi’an. The next highlight was the Labrang Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in Xiahe. We were surprised by the fresh snow on our way to Langmusi. The monastery and the gorge were both well worth to visit. The road to Songpan through the Grasslands was wonderful. Near Songpan we visited Huanglong National Park with all kinds of small lakes in amazing colors. Off course we did not forget to visit the Giant Pandas in the Chengdu Pandas Reserve. In Shangri-la it was time for action again. We first get the Giant Prayer Wheel in motion and made a nice tour on a bike in the afternoon. More action was required in the two days trekking through the Tiger Leaping Gorge. Near Lijiang we climbed the 5596m high Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Unfortunately we had to stop at an altitude of 4567m. In Dali we faced bad weather. We hardly could see the three famous Pagodas. In Yangshou we rafted, biked and hiked to enjoy of the beautiful Karst Landscape. At last Shanghai showed us how modern China is as well. The Shanghai Tower is with 632m the second highest tower on earth. With the Maglev (the magnetic train) you travel with 430km/h to the airport.
