Moving to Illinois (2019)
Thinking of moving to Illinois soon? Relocating to Illinois? There are plenty of posts you can find about the negative reasons to live in Illinois. Today I am talking about the positives and all the fun things about moving to Illinois. One cool thing is movies filmed in Illinois. To name a few there were; The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Man of Steel, and Home Alone. There were MANY MANY more, but that's pretty cool right? Not to mention we have Chicago PD, Chicago Fire, Chicago Med TV shows and they often have casting calls for extras. How fun is that?! Being in Illinois we are close to take plenty of road trips too which is lots of fun.

A large crowd filled the room at the 95th Street Library, where Representative Lauren Underwood hosted a Town Hall to discuss issues faced by senior citizens.
A major one brought up by both her and the group of 60 was healthcare.
“Many people have reached out to our office asking for help affording their prescriptions. Sometimes it’s really specific, they talk about insulin. Sometimes it’s programmatically specific to Medicare. And sometimes it’s just like, ‘I can’t afford it we need some help,’” said Representative Underwood. “And so, we’ve passed this spring a sweep of bills to deal with generics. Because there were a lot of bad actors in that generic space so that the generic drugs were starting to be unaffordable for people.”
This was helpful to many, but it’s not just affording generic drugs that’s a struggle for seniors.
In most Medicare plans, after a certain amount has ben paid out for covered drugs, some fall into a coverage gap which leads to out of pocket costs for users.
“By October, I’ve spent maybe $8,000 and then I’m in the catastrophic category. So October, November, December I can afford my insulin, but it’s a struggle from March to October. I think drug prices are the biggest problem facing my generation,” said attendee Cindy Mundell.
And Representative Underwood is taking action by working with her colleagues at the House of Representatives to address this issue.
“Right now we’re working on Medicare solutions. So those Medicare solutions are things like putting a cap on your out of pocket costs. We are also working on legislation to allow for price negotiation out of the department with the drug companies so that will lower your out of pocket cost as well,” said Representative Underwood.
Representative Underwood encouraged attendees to reach out to elected officials to ask questions and get their voices heard on issues that concern them.

Quigley's Irish Pub resides in the historic Jefferson Hill building, which was built in 1845, three years before the potato famine began in Ireland. The original hand hewn beams and stone foundation can be seen in the cottage room. The cottage room is the former billiard room of Naperville Mayor Kendall, whose family lived in the house in the early 1900's. Naperville Park District - Centennial Beach's Bathhouse Gets a Facelift
Beginning September 7, 2010, construction crews were busy at Centennial Beach, working to complete the planned renovations of the bathhouse, front entry, concessions, and parking areas of the Beach in time for the Grand Reopening on Saturday, May 28, 2011.
This project is the result of many years of planning, public input and preparation, including permitting with the City of Naperville, DuPage Country and the State of Illinois.
The renovations feature a new front entry plaza and patron drop-off area, a new entrance to the bathhouse, family changing rooms, improved locker facilities, deck-level restrooms and lockers, a new ADA platform lift, a new concessions building with an expanded food menu, staff training and support areas in the bathhouse and new mechanical systems and infrastructure for the bathhouse.
Central to the project is the historic bathhouse. We recognize what a beloved community focal point Centennial Beach is and the rich history it represents and we took careful steps to preserve it. On the exterior, the structure has a new, consolidated front entrance on the west side. Quarry stone, similar to the existing stone, has been carefully selected to maintain consistency for the new portion of the building. Additionally, interpretive signs have been added to preserve the stories from Centennial Beach's unique history.
White Store Clerk In Naperville, Illinois Tells Hispanic Customers To Go Back To Their Country
White Convenience Store Clerk In Naperville, Illinois Tells Hispanic Customers To Go Back To Their Country
#Trump
The clerk who spurred protests outside a Naperville Mobil gas station Wednesday after video showed him telling Hispanic customers “they need to go back to their country” and “ICE will come” has been fired.
“Thank god. I am so happy, said Nicte Buitron, who was with her family at the gas station when the incident occurred Tuesday. “What he said to my family was wrong.”
Steve Kalhorn, general counsel with Buchanan Energy, which owns the Washington Street location as well as 59 other stores in the Chicago-area market, said the clerk initially was suspended Wednesday pending an internal investigation. Since then, his employment has been terminated.
Kalhorn said after receiving numerous calls regarding a social media video Wednesday morning, he immediately had the information technology department pull the surveillance audio and video from the store.
The clerk is also a Christian minister and a Trump supporter.
Video captured Tuesday and posted on social media later that night shows a male station attendant at the Bucky’s Express at Washington Street and Bailey Road being confronted by several members of a Hispanic family over comments he made previously off camera questioning whether a 15-year-old girl was a citizen of the United States.
The girl – Indira Buitron, of Bolingbrook – was bicycling from Woodridge with her aunts and cousins Tuesday on the trail running along Washington Street. They stopped at the 1576 S. Washington St. Mobil station after a wheel on the Indira’s bike became loose and needed repair.
The family called 20-year-old Carolina Buitron, of Woodridge, to come pick up Indira and the bicycle.
While waiting, Indira said she and her cousins went into the Bucky’s store to see if they could purchase chips or a snack with the $2 they had.
The clerk apparently told girl and her cousins the food was too expensive and then asked if the cousins were adopted.
Indira told the man her cousins were visiting from Mexico.
He then allegedly questioned Indira’s citizenship.
“I was really surprised. No one ever asked me that before,” said Indira, who was born in the United States.
Indira recounted the story to her aunts and to Carolina Buitron when she arrived.
“I was already mad because my bike was broken,” Carolina Buitron said. “That poured more fuel on my fire.”
She said she immediately tried to confront the clerk over his comments, but her efforts were quashed by Bucky’s employees and another customer. The incident was captured on video along with another argument between the clerk and Carolina Buitron’s aunt and mother.
Carolina Buitron said she was shocked by the clerk’s reaction. “We come to this gas station all of the time on our bikes,” she said.
One of the visiting cousins, Maria Fernanda, 19, said she posted the video on Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms to let people know how poorly they were treated. “It was not fair. It was racist,” she said.
Meanwhile in Houston, Texas, an angry customer at Dumpling King off Westheimer berated two waitresses until Houstonians stepped in to help.
I don't know how you go from trying to fix a chicken order to go back to your country. You don't belong here, you don't speak English, and why do you have a business here? said Bradley Leconey.
Leconey watched it all unfold and pulled out his cell phone as customers came to the restaurant staff's defense. He said the waitresses were moved to tears and didn't know how to react.
He said Donald Trump is my President, Leconey said. He raised his hand with a flat palm kind of like hail Hitler and laughed about it. It blew me away. It went on for 25 minutes telling her to speak English laughing at her. It was just a very uncomfortable situation.
The confrontation at Dumpling King came one day after President Trump tweeted four Democrat Congresswomen should go back to the countries they came from. All four are U.S. citizens.
I think it's setting the tone allowing people to act like that, Leconey said.
Leconey said when these things happen people need to stand up and speak out because this country belongs to everybody.
I think he should apologize to them and think before he speaks, Leconey said.
The two waitresses did not want to talk on camera but did say they're grateful to the customers for coming to their defense.
Bernie Sanders Speaks to Naperville Students
Current U.S. Senator from Vermont, and former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders stopped by Naperville Central to address a packed auditorium.
The senator spoke to around 800 sophomore students in Government and A.P. Government from both Naperville North and Central about the importance of caring about politics.
“Politics is important because policies are determined which will end up determining whether or not you have jobs or not jobs, whether you have healthcare, whether or not we protect the environment, whether we address climate change,” said Senator Sanders.
Sanders was in town to promote his latest book “Bernie Sanders’ Guide to Political Revolution,” which is aimed at a teen audience.
The presentation was very interactive, with Sanders asking the students for their opinions, and with some students getting the chance to ask questions of the senator, touching on topics like healthcare, racial injustice and economic inequality.
“Real change never takes place from the top on down, you may see a president signing a bill, but understand that before the president signed that bill, generally speaking millions of people were active in the effort to make that legislation possible,” said Senator Sanders.
The Naperville Central Advanced Band Wind Ensemble performed for the senator, doing a rendition of Vermont’s state song.
Sanders wrapped up his visit to our area by giving a book talk at the Paramount Theater in Aurora.
This is the second time this year that Anderson’s Bookshop has brought Sanders to town.

Naperville Results for the Primary Election
This primary election had close races, heavy campaigning and historic voter turnout in DuPage County.
“It's the highest percentage of turnout as well as the most voters that have ever turned out for a presidential primary. We're over 50 percent, we're at like 50.1 percent,” said Robert Saar, Executive Director of the DuPage County Election Commission.
Starting with the race for the Republican nomination for District Five of the DuPage County Forest Preserve, incumbent Mary Lou Wehrli received 55 percent of the vote, beating out challenger Carl Schultz.
“I'm grateful that people pay attention enough to actually take the time and get out and vote, and to talk to those they know are following issues and following people and also following the work that's being done,” said Wehrli.
Wehrli is currently unopposed in the general election.
Moving to Illinois' 11th Congressional District, Tonia Khouri beat Nick Stella and Herman White for the Republican nomination.
“We're just going to continue to reach out the residents to spread our message, our message of the need for bold leadership. I want to bring fresh energy and new ideas and independent thinking to Washington,” said Khouri.
But Khouri can't get too settled just yet, she received 37 percent of the vote to Stella's 36.3 percent. With only 416 votes separating them, and the potential for absentee ballots to still be in the mail, the winner could change.
“This still could flip, the election is clearly not over yet,” said Saar.
Whoever comes out on top will go on to face Democratic incumbent Bill Foster, who has held the seat since 2012.
DuPage voters also cast their ballots for the presidential primary.
“The interest was strong on both sides, Bernie Sanders won in DuPage and Donald Trump won in DuPage,” said Saar.
That was consistent with Illinois winners on the Republican side, but Hillary took the state for the Democrats.
Looking to the general election, officials are expecting more voters than ever before.
Saar explains, “We'll probably have 75,000 to 80,000 more voters go to vote than in any election in the past, so I expect it to be hitting 80 percent, 82 percent.”
The general election will take place on November 8, 2016.

Impeach & Remove Rally
Hundreds gathered at the Riverwalk Grand Pavilion last night for a rally calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump.
“I’ve been monitoring what’s going on with the government, Congress, and the presidency. Congress is not holding the president accountable, something needed to be done. And I knew I would feel bad if I didn’t do something,” said organizer Rovert Landolfi.
Nationwide Event
The Naperville rally was one of many held across the nation, meant to send a message that “nobody is above the law.”
“Right now we’re literally living through history. We’re setting a precedent for the next presidents that are going to be elected. If we let this sort of behavior continue, then what is going to happen to our government?” said Nikitha Ballari.
Against Impeachment
But not everyone believes impeachment is the right choice.
“I’ve had 13 presidents in my life and I think Donald Trump is doing a great job. I don’t agree with him 100 percent as far as behavior, but for what I hired him to do, I feel he’s doing it and I believe in his policies,” said Bruce Pope.
Government Vote
After hearing from the speakers, the crowd walked down to Jackson Avenue.
The House of Representatives is expected to vote on impeachment later today.

Naperville reaches out to Caterpillar to set Headquarters in Town
At the most recent City Council meeting, Mayor Chirico made it clear that the city would be open to doing business with the international construction company who recently announced they’d be moving their headquarters.
“We just want them to know that we are open for business, and you know they’re in the Earth moving business and we say around here that ‘Naperville we move heavens,’ so together we can move heaven and Earth,” explained Steve Chirico, Mayor of Naperville.
Caterpillar is looking to move from Peoria to the Chicago-land area and bring roughly 300 administration jobs in the process.
The city says they’ll be reaching out to Caterpillar letting them know of our area’s amenities.
Also discussed at the meeting was the sale of land from North Central College to the city.
Council unanimously voted to purchase land located next to the Central Parking Facility in Downtown Naperville to possibly expand the site in the future.
However, most council members weren’t on board with the use of the property.
“I do not consider this a first step toward redoing, rebuilding or anything to do with the Central Parking Facility. I think this is good land acquisition and if it ever comes back again I want the record to reflect that I don’t support where it’s going,” said Councilwoman Rebecca Boyd-Obarski.
Naperville News 17’s Alyssa Bochenek reports.
Naperville Election Results 2015
After a historic election, the votes have been tallied, and a new Naperville Mayor has been chosen for the first time in 20 years.
Steve Chirico brought in just over 60% of the votes in the four-way race on Election Day, taking home the victory as Naperville’s next Mayor.
“I’m just very excited, I’m overwhelmed and I’m very happy to be given this opportunity, I really am and I’m going to do my best. I’m going to work hard I’m going to try my best to make the community proud of me and do everything I can to make Naperville a prosperous city in the future,” said Chirico.
The Naperville native has served four years on City Council and will be replacing Mayor A. George Pradel who will retire after serving since 1995.
Chirico will take office on May 3.
In other races, two incumbents held onto their seats on the Naperville Park District board. Rich Janor and Marie Todd will serve another term, joined by newcomer Jim Ensign.
Over in Indian Prairie School District 204, incumbents Lori Price, Mark Rising and Justin Karubas also retained their seats and will continue leading the third largest school district in Illinois.
District 203 school board was unopposed.
And in Naperville’s unprecedented City Council race, two incumbents and six newcomers have won the eight seats up for election. Paul Hinterlong, Patty Gustin, Rebecca Boyd-Obarski, and Becky Anderson will be serving four year terms and Judith Brodhead, Kevin Coyne, John Krummen and Kevin Gallaher will serve for two years.

Downtown 2030
Residents and tourists of Naperville have come to be familiar with the downtown scene.
But this could soon change due to the Naperville Downtown2030 plan, a long term vision set up by the Downtown Advisory Commission that will grow and improve the area.
Though approved in 2011, the commission is currently deciding how the downtown space is defined.
“It establishes the boundary of the downtown, which is most of what you see today. But it does talk about northern expansion, and if it does expand North what sort of uses we want to see in that area,” said Allison Laff, Operations Manager for the Transportation and Engineering Development Group.
The area in question is between Benton and Douglas Avenue and between Webster and Washington.
“It could really go one of two ways. If there’s a big anchor use that would require large redevelopment, then we could see it being commercial with some restaurants. If that doesn’t happen, and it’s more lot-by-lot redevelopment, then we would probably see more residential uses like duplexes, or townhomes, or some of the conversion of the existing houses to small-scale retail,” said Laff.
The possible northern expansion of downtown Naperville has some local business owners talking.
“Just having a stronger connection and a larger area, especially as it expands there’s stuff being built to the North on Water Street to the South. I think if all those things are done properly and they can fit in downtown, then it just makes it a better destination for everybody to come and visit,” said Kris Hartner, Owner of Naperville Running Co.
“I understand the expansion of the downtown, I think it’s good for everybody. I think it’s good for the city, good for the downtown, because we are out of space pretty much. But what I would really emphasize is that we do not have enough parking. The congestion and the parking issues in downtown Naperville are becoming a detriment,” said Becky Anderson, Co-Owner of Anderson’s Bookshop.
The committee agrees that it needs to be addressed.
“In either scenario it says that parking for that area needs to be accommodated for that area, because the parking decks that are around it won’t be large enough to accommodate redevelopment of that area,” said Laff.
The discussion will continue at the next Downtown Advisory Commission meeting.
To find out more about the ongoing changes with the Downtown2030 plan, search “Downtown2030” on the City of Naperville website.
