[Nikko Japan Travel Vlog Blog]
A walk along Kanmangafuchi Abyss in Nikko, Japan. Video and photos of the mystic gorge.
Nikko can be reached for a day trip from Tokyo and is quiet popular. But too see all the attractions of the area one should plan at least 2 days for the destination.
From Japan Guide:
Kanmangafuchi Abyss (憾満ヶ淵) was formed by an eruption of nearby Mount Nantai. This gorge near central Nikko is only a few hundred meters long and can be enjoyed from a pleasant riverside walking trail.
Kanmangafuchi is also known for its row of about 70 stone statues of Jizo, a Bodhisattva who cares for the deceased. This particular group of Jizo statues is alternately called Bake Jizo (Ghost Jizo), Narabi Jizo (Jizo in a line) or Hyaku Jizo (100 Jizo). The statues look out over the river and across to the Nikko Botanical Garden, but the botanical garden cannot be entered from the abyss.

Kanaman-ga-fuchi’s collection of Jizo statues is one of the most iconic locations in Nikko’s spiritual world. The statues have a significant importance for the locals as well as for the visitors making a pilgrimage to Nikko. It is believed that the figures of Jizo bring solace to people suffering from the loss of a child. It is said that Jizo helps to sneak children into the afterlife in the sleeves of his robe, assisting those babies that did not have the chance to build up good karma on earth prior to their passing. This is why you’ll see the statues often dressed in crocheted clothing made by those grieving the loss of a loved one. Parents hope that if they care for the figures of Jizo, he will do the same for their dead children. It is also said, that Jizo is the Bodhisattva who also cares for travellers and lost souls.
Jizo belong to Japan’s most beloved deities.

Nikko's Jizo Statues
2007 Japan Trip
In Nikko, there is a long row of Jizo statues. Its said that if you walk down the path and count the statues, then count them again coming back, you'll never get the same number. Both Kass and I counted and we got different numbers.
Sorry for the poor camera work. Hard to keep it steady and walk. You can hear her reaction at the end.
Kanmangafuchi Abyss - Tochigi - 憾満ヶ淵 - 4K Ultra HD
Located near Nikko, Kanmangafuchi Abyss was formed centuries ago by an eruption of the nearby Mount Nantai, and offers a few nice long trails alongside a pleasant river.
Not only does Kanmangafuchi Abyss offer a stunning view of its nearby river, Kanmangafuchi is also known for its row of about 100 stone statues of Jizo, a Bodhisattva who cares for the deceased. This particular group of Jizo statues is alternately called Bake Jizo (ghost Jizo), Narabi Jizo (Jizo in a line) or finally Hyaku Jizo (100 Jizo).

There is a great, short walking course near Nikko Tosho-gu World Heritage Site. It leads to the deep Kanmangafuchi gulch on the Daiya River. The nearest Bus Stop is the Nishi-sando Bus Stop and takes about 60 minutes to complete.
My channel, Japan Silhouette, features beautiful scenery, traditional culture, Origami arrangement, and the warm heart of the Japanese people.
I also visit other countries and record my impression about them, perhaps from a Japanese perspective.
