The Naracoorte Limestone Caves were a must see. Especially with our grandson on board, at 5 yrs old giving the tour guide a lesson on dinosaur bones. The caves are outstanding, many levels of size, difficulty in access that suits the casual or serious explorer. A wonder to see. We will spend more time there next visit.

The Blue Lake is a large, monomictic, crater lake located in a dormant volcanic maar associated with the Mount Gambier maar complex. The lake is situated near Mount Gambier in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia, and is one of four crater lakes on Mount Gambier maar.
Naracoorte Caves National Park is a national park near Naracoorte in the Limestone Coast tourism region in the south-east of South Australia (Australia). It was officially recognised in 1994 for its extensive fossil record when the site was inscribed on the World Heritage List, along with Riversleigh. The park preserves 6 km² of remnant vegetation, with 26 caves contained within the 3.05 km² World Heritage Area. Out of the 28 known caves in the park, only four are open to the public. Other caves are kept away from the public eye as they are important for scientific research and also for the protection of the caves and their contents. Many of the caves contain spectacular stalactites and stalagmites.

In 1969, two explorers squeezed through a gap in Victoria Fossil Cave and discovered a massive chamber full of fossilised remains.
For over 200,000 years this chamber had been a pitfall trap, storing the remains of thousands of animals. Layer upon layer of remains accumulated over the years, creating a rich fossil record of the ancient animals that roamed the area.
Since then, this extraordinary fossil deposit has been a working paleontological dig – tens of thousands of fossil bones have been recovered. The fossils give us a unique window into the climate and environment of the times when these animals lived.
The Victoria Fossil Cave showcases the World Heritage features of the park. It is recognised the world over for its outstanding scientific value.

On the tour you’ll walk through magnificent speleothem chambers (e.g. stalactites, stalagmites and helectites) on the way to the Fossil Chamber. Your guide will tell you all about the accumulation of bones in the caves, excavation techniques, current research and World Heritage. You'll also get the chance to analyse complete skeletons of megafauna species.
About 400 metres of this cave has a developed pathway and constructed stairs. There are about 50 steps into the cave and a steep sloping path out of it, but the walk is relatively easy.
The talk is suitable for all ages. However with half an hour sitting in the Fossil Chamber, it may not be suitable for some energetic children.

The UNESCO listed world heritage Naracoorte caves acted as pitfall traps, collecting animals for 500,000 years. They span several ice ages, the arrival of humans in the area and the extinction of Australia’s megafauna roughly 60,000 years ago.

Discovered in 1845, this was the first cave to be found in the region. For many years the cave was a community space, used by locals for picnics, parties and to escape the summer heat. Now, Blanche Cave is World and National Heritage listed.

Naracoorte Caves National Park is one of 17 World Heritage sites in Australia. Over the past 500,000 years, the park's 26 caves have acted as animal traps. Many of the extensive fossil deposits of giant megafauna found inside the caves can be viewed on regular tours led by professional guides.
Caving Australia! Yarrangobilly Caves NSW | Where To Now
In Spring 2017 we went on a 4 Day Trip to Yarrangobilly Caves. Using the Two Camels BnB in Tumut as out base, we made two day-trips to the caves to see the sights and take in the scenery.
Visiting the Thermal Pool for a Swim, seeing the Jersey and Jillabenan Caves, touring the South Glory Cave, and walking around the area.
We both highly recommend the trip as one for the whole family to enjoy!

This spectacular cave is one of the Naracoorte Caves’ special treasures. Discovered in 1908, Alexandra Cave is full of speleothems – stalactites, stalagmites, and columns. You’ll be amazed by the contrast between delicate needle-like stalactites and massive twisting columns.
As you walk through, marvelling at how the structures seem to defy gravity, keep an eye open for magnificent helectites and flowstone.
This tour is a good introduction to caves and the geological processes that form them. Your guide will discuss the geology of the region and how the caves were formed.
Alexandra Cave is an easy 30 minute tour through three beautiful chambers. You’ll meet your guide in front of the Wonambi Fossil Centre and it’s a short walk from there to the cave entrance. This tour is ideal for families with small children.

Grand and inspiring, Wet Cave is the only cave you can visit without a guide. This is a place to take your time and to discover at your leisure. The robust columns and stalactites offer a wonderful contrast to the delicate formations in Alexandra Cave.
Wet Cave is an easy self-guided walk with an automated lighting system. There are two chambers to discover. In the first, natural light filters through the green tendrils of tree ferns, while the second is dark and mysterious.
This is a cave to be enjoyed by all ages. There are about 20 steps leading down into the cave.
Tours are self guided, stay as long as you wish.
