Rahasya: What is the mystery behind Badrinath's Tapt Kund?
We are back with another exciting edition of Rahasya. In today’s episode, we will take you to Badrinath's Tapt Kund. It is said that taking a shower in the hot water springs can cure all the skin related diseases.
Tapt kund - Himalayan hot water sulphur spring at Badrinath
Devotees who visit Badrinath temple often bathe in the Tapt Kund.
Tapt Kund, a hot sulfur springs just below the temple, are considered to be medicinal; many pilgrims consider it a requirement to bathe in the springs before visiting the temple.
Badrinath(3,415 metres) is located in the Garhwal hills, on the banks of Alaknanda River. It is a holy town for Hindus in chamoli district of Uttarakhand. It is the most important religious sites among the Chardham. Dwarka, Jagannath Puri, and Rameshwaram are the other three religious sites among the Chardham. The town got its name from the holy temple of Badrinath. Badrinath is situated 301km north of Rishikesh. It is situated in the background of Nilkantha Peak (6560 metres) and between the Nar and Narayana mountain range.
According to a legend, Adi Shankara found a image of Lord Badrinarayan made of black stone (Saligram) in Alaknanda river. He initially kept it in a cave near Tapt kund or hot spring which was later shifted by king of Garhwal to the present temple in 16th century. The hot spring still exists near this temple and taking bath in it keeps a very important religious significance. It is a place sacred to Vishnu, particularly in Vishnu's dual form of Nara-Narayana. Its reference is also given in Hindu Scriptures. This place is full of Bael fruit i.e, Badri or 'Ber' in hindi. According to a another legend Vishnu meditated here for couple of hundered years. Godess Lakshmi gave shelter to him for all those years while he was doing meditation. She later turned into a Badri herself and her Lord was thus known as Badrinath. Another legend is when Godess Ganga was about to descend on earth for the welfare of humanity, it was split into two parts, with Alaknanda one of them so that the mother earth could withstand her force.

BADRIKAASHRAM
Badrinath being one of the most legendary Temples, it has numerous mythical tales associated with it. According to one mythological tale, Lord Vishnu had performed rigorous atonement at this place. During his intense meditation, he was unaware about the severe weather conditions. To protect him from the scorching heat of the sun, his spouse Goddess Lakshmi acquired the shape of Badri tree and spread over him. Witnessing this, Lord Vishnu was pleased by her devotion and hence he named the spot after her as Badrikashram.
LORD NARAYANAS DESIRE TO MEDITATE IN BADRINATH
Another legend states that, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were once performing tapasya in Badrinath. It was then Lord Vishnu came in disguise as a small boy and disrupted them, by crying loudly. On hearing that Goddesses Parvati asked him the reason behind his mournful behavior, to which he replied that he wanted to meditate in Badrinath. Shiva and Parvati, on discovering Lord Narayan in disguise, left Badrinath and moved to Kedarnath
TALE OF NAR AND NARAYANA
Badrinath Dham is also related to the tale of the two sons of Dharma, Nar and Narayana who wished to setup their hermitage and expand their religious base amidst the pious Himalayas. Going by the legends, during their quest to find a suitable place for their hermitage they led to a chanced discovery of the four sites of Panch Badri, namely Dhyan Badri, Yog Badri , Bridha Badri and Bhavishya Badri. Finally they came across a spot which was blessed with two fascinating cold and hot springs behind river Alaknanda. They were extremely overjoyed on finding this place and thus they named this place as Badri Vishal, this is how Badrinath came into being.
PANDAVA'S ASCENT TO SWARGAROHINI VIA BADRINATH
It is also said that the Pandavas of the holy epic Mahabharata climbed via 'Swargarohini, popularly known as the ascent to heaven, and Mana town, north of Badrinath while on their route to heaven.
BADRINATH TEMPLE
Ancient texts hold this abode of Lord Vishnu at a very high esteem, stating - there are many spots of pilgrimage in the heaven, earth and the world, but there has been none equal to Badri, nor shall there be. At the height of 3,133 meters, it stands proud with its rich past along the banks of Alaknanda River. Regarded as the most important temple of Vishnu, the Badrinath shrine is said to be established by Adi Shankaracharya. He found the Saligram idol of Lord Badri immersed in the waters of Alaknanda and installed it in a cave near the Tapt Kund.
It was in the 16th century that a Garhwal King got a temple erected to house the statue of the God. The present structure is the result of plenty of restorations the temple has undergone due to damages caused by avalanches and earthquakes. Lord Vishnu can be worshipped in a black stone idol sitting in a meditative pose surrounded by idols of other gods like Nar, Narayana, Narad, Ganesha, Garud and Kuber. In the winter season, the idol of Lord Badri is shifted to Yogadhyan Badri in Pandukeshwar (Chamoli district).
TAPT KUND
Just below the temple, there is a natural thermal spring which is believed to be infused with therapeutic properties. A dip in the holy and hot waters of the Kund is necessary before a devotee visits the sacred shrine of Badrinath. Near the Tapt Kund also lie five boulders which are, as per mythology, Narad, Narsingh, Varah, Garur and Markanday.
BRAHMA KAPAL
It is a flat platform by the banks of Alaknanda 100 meters north of the temple. Performing propitiating rites for the deceased family members, it is believed, would free them from the vicious circle of life and death.
NEELKANTH PEAK
Known as the 'Queen of Garhwal', Neelkanth Peak, standing with its gigantic height of 6,597 meter (approx.), sets a great background to the Badrinath shrine. Named after Lord Shiva, the splendour of the snow-covered peak gets augmented as it receives the first rays of the Sun at the crack of dawn.
MATA MURTI MANDIR
It is located 3 km from the Badrinath temple, on the banks of Alaknanda River. Mata Murti temple is believed to be the mother of Nara and Narayan, the twin-brother avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu. It was the relentless prayers of Mata Murti that persuaded Lord Vishnu to take birth from her womb. Every year, in the month of September, pilgrims throng to attend the Mata Murti ka Mela (fair).
SHESHNETRA
Between two seasonal lakes, on the opposite bank of Alaknanda, there exists a big rock which gives the impression of Shesh Nag, the legendary snake of Lord Vishnu. The Sheshnetra has a natural mark which looks like an eye of the Shesh Nag. Located 1.5 km from the temple, the serpent is believed to be guarding the sacred shrine of Badrinath.
VASUDHARA FALLS
A 122 meters high beautiful waterfall positioned in the tranquil surroundings of Himalayas can be reached by covering 3 km (up to Mana village) by road and trekking the other 6 km on foot.

Badarinath Dham is considered as one of the most sacred centres of pilgrimage situated in the lofty Himalayan heights in the Garhwal hill tracks (Uttarakhand). Situated at the height of 3133 m (10248 feet) above sea level. The route to Badarinath is one of the most fascinating one due to the lofty hilly terrain, curves and cliffs amidst the most scenically beautiful place on the earth.
Throughout the route to Badarinath there are numerous pilgrimage sites at Deo Prayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Nandaprayag and Vishnuprayag; as well as Pandukeswar where king Pandu observed Tapasya with his queen Madri and where his sons Pandavas, stayed during their pilgrimage to heaven, and the site where Bhima and Hanuman (sons of Vayu) met.
At Badarinath Lord MahaVishnu is believed to have done his penance. Seeing the Lord doing his penance in the open, Goddess Mahalaxmi is believed to have assumed the form of Badari tree to provide him shelter to face the onslaught of the adverse weather conditions, therefore the name Badari Narayan. It is believed that Lord Vishnu revealed to Narad rishi that Nar & Naryans forms were his own. It is also believed that Narad rishi, who also did his penance here, is even now worshipping the supreme God with Ashtakshara mantras.
The image of Badarinarayan here is fashioned out of Saligramam. Badarinarayan is seen under the Badari tree, flanked by Kuber and Garuda, Narad, Narayan and Nar. Mahalakshmi has a sanctum outside in the parikrama. There is also a shrine to Adi Sankara at Badarinath.
Behind the temple of Lord Badarinarayan is the Lakshmi Narsimh mandir, with shrines to Desikacharya and Ramanujachary. At Badarinath one can witness one of the greatest wonders of Nature in the Hot water springs of Taptkund on the banks of ice chilled river Alaknanda. The temperature of the water in the Kund is 55 degree centigrade whereas the normal temperature in this region for most part of the year remains at 9-10 degree centigrade to sub-zero levels. Before visiting the temple the pilgrims take a holy bath in the Taptkund.
The Temple's present structure was built by the Kings of Garhwal. The Temple has three sections - Garbhagriha (Sanctum), the Darshan Mandap, and Sabha Mandap. The Garbhagriha (Sanctum) houses Lord Badari Narayan, Kuber (God of wealth), Narad rishi, Udhava, Nar & Narayan.
Lord Badari Narayan (also called as Badari Vishal) is armed with Shankh (Conch) and Chakra in two arms in a lifted posture and two arms rested on the lap in Yogamudra. The principal image is of black stone and it represents Vishnu seated in meditative pose. The temple also houses Garuda (Vehicle of Lord Narayan). Also here are the idols of Adi Shankar, Swami Desikan and Shri Ramanujam. Guru-Shisya parampara is supposed to have its roots here.
Best Time to visit:- The ideal time or peak season to go for a Char Dham Yatra is from May to October, except monsoons. This is because; all the four sacred sites are perched in Garhwal Himalayas, which is prone to heavy snowfall. As a result, all the passage leading to the shrines are blocked. Moreover, during the monsoon season, there is undue threat of having landslides, which can further disrupt the journey.

Hidden Treasure at Narad Falls near Yamunotri
Its perhaps the nature's way to preserve its most beautiful treasures. That is the reason, that despite being just a few hundred metres away from the main road to Yamunotri, through which thousands of tourists pass daily during the Char Dham Yatra season, the Narad Falls gets barely a few dozen people daily, may be less. This place is not visible from the main road, and it still is not that popular among the tourists. More so, it is among the very few places that I have heard of, which have been dedicated to mythological saint Narad. The Narad Ganga river, on which this falls is located, is a tributary of Yamuna. There is hot spring nearby and it is always so fascinating to be at a place where streams of freezing water and boiling water are flowing side by side naturally.
BADRINATH DHAM YATRA #CHAR DHAM#UTTARAKHAND
As to the age, there are no historical records are available of this holy temple, however reference to the Lord Badri Nath has been made in Vedas, the holy book of the Hindus. The temple is situated on the banks of the Alaknanda River in the lap at the Narain Parvat, near a hot water spring-the Tapta Kund. The temple was worshipped as a Buddhist temple, when King Ashoka was the ruler of India, but according to Skand Puran the idol of Lord Badrinath was recovered by Adiguru Shankaracharya from Narad Kund and was re-enshrined in the 8th century A.D. in this temple. The idol of Lord Vishnu (Badri Nath) is made of black stone (Shaligram) and seated in a Padmasan Posture. Devotees can see the idol of Lord Badri Nath as Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh, Hanuman, Kali or Guru, in what so ever form they wish to see the almighty, all pervading and all in one.
The temple is divided into three parts. The garbh griha in which the idol of Lord Badrinath is seated in the inner part of this place and canopy covered with gold sheet. Second part is known as Darshan Mandap in which puja ceremonies are performed. Third part is the Sabha Mandap, which is an outer hall, where devotees wait for darshan of Lord Badrinath. Darshan of Lord Badrinath is available in Sabha Mandap at 6:30 A.M. to 13:00 Noon and 4:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M.
