Naraijuku, Shiojiri city, Nagano pref
Narai-juku (奈良井宿) was the thirty-fourth of the sixty-nine stations of the Nakasendo, as well as the second of eleven stations along the Kisoji.
It is located in the present-day city of Shiojiri, Nagano Prefecture, Japan.
Naraijuku - Japan’s Oldest Village
Naraijuku is one of the 11th villages that was on the Nakasendo, one of the main routes that linked Edo (the old name of Tokyo) and Kyoto during the Edo era (1603-1868).

Narai Juku (Kiso Valley) - Nagano - 奈良井 - 4K Ultra HD
Nagano Narai-Juku (Kiso Valley) - 奈良井 - 4K Ultra HD : Located in the southwestern part of Nagano prefecture, Narai-Juku was once a section of this historic Nakasendo Highway connecting Kyoto with Edo (presently known as Tokyo). Because of its strategic location between both cities, Narai-Juku quickly became one of the wealthiest towns in the Kiso Valley.
While similar in its historical role to Tsumago and Magome, two other famous towns on the Nakasendo Highway section of the Kiso Valley, Narai-Juku is today a gorgeous little town filled with many small shops and restaurants that will blow your mind!
Other interesting attractions around Narai-Juku include its many delightful little temples as well as its beautiful modern wooden bridge, Kisho Ohashi, that was build with 300 year old cypress. While it is beautiful both day and night, this bridge is unfortunately very close to one of the busiest national roads of Kiso Valley, and the sounds of the many trucks, even at night, tends to spoil the experience of enjoying the bridge.

Narai juki shiojiri shi nagano ken
Narai Juku, Kiso Valley, Japan, 奈良井宿 - Canon 80D - Virtual Trip
#narai,#japan
Narai Juku is one of those traditional Japanese villages, located in Nagano Prefecture, about an hour from Nagano. It is the 34th step city of Nakasendô, the imperial road linking Edo to Kyoto. It is also the second village of Kisoji, the former trade route before the Nakasendô and which already connected 11 villages in the Kiso Valley.
Narai-juku was apparently the most prosperous village at the time and served as a stop for travelers, who then passed through the Torii Pass, the most difficult passage of the entire route.
The village stretches for almost a kilometer, wedged between the green hills and the Naraigawa River. The city was nicknamed the city of a thousand buildings, and even today, it is an exception in the valley, because it is the only village where so many old houses line up so far: is the largest Shukuba or post office of Nakasendô.
Narai Juku is administratively cut into three parts named Kanmachi (for the top of the village), Nakamachi (the middle of the village) and Shimomachi (the city below). The entire visit of the village takes between 1 hour and 2 hours.
Narai-juku has a very large number of accommodations, sumptuous and huge ryokan, and it is an excellent step that can allow you to cut the road to Kyoto or Tokyo.
From Narai, you can take the train to Kiso Fukushima, Nagiso or Nakatsugawa to visit the other historic lighthouse villages of this ancient imperial and commercial route.

Narai Juku - Old Japanese Village in Nagano
Starting to describe a little today's visit in Narai Juku.
This town was one of the stop where people would take a break on their long journey in between Edo (Tokyo) and Kyoko on the Nakasendo 中山道, the mountain pass that connected those 2 main cities at the time.
Nowadays, it is the longest traditional street with inns as it extends to about 1 km.
Don't be fooled by today's visit. I have been extremely lucky that there were so few people. This place is usually packed.
When we visited the inn, I talked about a narrow path (well, not so narrow ;-) I found out reading the leaflet of the inn in the train that this was the indoor alley that enabled to take the horses on the other side where the Naka Niwa 中庭 (courtyard? ) was.
The owner, is at the origin of Narai Juku becoming so well known and popular in Japan and now around the world. He did lots of things in that direction in his 20s. He is the 6th generation of the family who have been owning the house for about 200 years!
The bento boxes that have an oval or round shape are called Menpa.
I checked and I was right. It takes about 3.30 hours by train from Tokyo station.
The price is around 6.800 yen (about 63 dollars, today's rate).
More to come tomorrow, when I feel better!
Thanks for watching!

Visiting an old Japanese village and Matsumoto Castle
Do you want to see more of Japan's countryside and visit some hidden treasures? We explored the area around Hakuba valley and did a daytrip to Matsumoto Castle, one of the national treasures of Japan. Spontaneously, we decided to visit the old Japanese village Narai-Juku, an old post town on the Nakasendo trail connecting Kyoto and Tokyo. Both locations are perfect to learn something about Japanese history and are very picturesque. We loved this historic excursion around Japan's countryside! Did you?

MATSUMOTO CITY,NAGANO KEN,JAPAN
I created this video with the YouTube Video Editor (
This is Japan! - Nagano and the Japanese Alps
Impression of Nagano, in 1998 host of the Olympic winter games; nowadays a relaxed city. View of the Zenko-ji temple complex. Exceptionally great nature in the Japanese Alps: mountains in the clouds, lots of water, monkeys in the wild: breathtaking!
Tsumago, a beautifully preserved post town, Nagano, Japan
Tsumago is one of well preserved post town in the Kiso Valley, Nagano, Japan. These post towns were built during Edo Period (1603-1868) along major highways to accommodate commerce and travelers. Many of the post towns were restored during the preservation movement in the 1960's. Tsumago is one of the best examples of the preservation and is now a major tourist attraction.

Narai Japan
On our way to Kiso for another BBQ we stopped at this historic town called Narai. Its small but so many interesting things are here. I loved it!
The Well Preserved Village of Narai-Juku, Japan
I think the little village of Narai may have been my favorite. Narai is one of the best preserved villages on the route and the thirty-fourth of the 69 stations along the Nakasendo Trail. It also had the highest elevation and flourished because of all the travelers going through the Torii Pass.
Narai had many stores, and shops sold my favorite gohei-mochi to take away, as well as to be eaten in restaurants. Gohei-mochi are rice cakes, or dumplings, covered with miso paste and found only in this area. Although it was raining hard by now, Steve and I slogged off to visit the ancient 200 shrines at the other end of the village. This was it! A small stop in Hirasaw and it would be on to Tokyo.
