Garter snakes mating at the Narcisse Snake Dens in Manitoba
Red-sided garter snakes emerge from their winter dens at the Narcisse Snake Dens in Manitoba, Canada and form writhing mating balls where multiple males try to mate with a single female. The snake orgy is a family-friendly tourist attraction that happens for a few weeks every April and May, usually between Mother's Day and Canada's May Long Weekend. This was shot on Saturday May 18, 2019. Narcisse is about 90 minutes north of Winnipeg.

Narcisse Snake Pits - Mating Ball Frenzy - 2016
On Monday, May 9th, I took a leisurely drive to visit the Narcisse snake dens/pits. The dens are located about 130 Kms north of Winnipeg in the Manitoba Interlake region. As you will see in the video, I was in luck...there was a lot of action in those pits.
Here you can see more snakes at a glance than anywhere else in the world. For two brief periods each year tens of thousands of red-sided garter snakes congregate at the surface of their winter dens. Beginning with the first few warm days of spring, garter snakes emerge from these dens and gather in large numbers to perform a fascinating mating ritual. Following a two to three week frenzy of mating activity, snakes disperse to nearby marshes for the summer. By early fall they return to their dens, wintering in fissures and crevasses of the limestone bedrock below the frozen ground.
ये है दुनिया की रहस्यमयी क्रिया / Canada narcisse garter snake / snakes den
The Narcisse Snake Dens, in Manitoba, Canada, hold the largest concentration in the world of red-sided garter snakes. During winter months, the snakes spend most of the time hibernating but when mating season comes, they’ve only got one thing on their minds – getting laid. And now’s the time it’s all going down as mating season has well and truly begun – and as this Nature North video shows, it’s a pretty frantic process.More than 3,000 people visit the snake dens every day to see the snakes rolling around. As Brendan Spearin, a fisheries protection biologist, told Motherboard after recently taking his in-laws to the site: ‘They’re coming from all directions trying to find ways into the dens, snakes crawling on trees, trying to navigate the steep-ish cliffs.’ But it’s not all fun and games. The drive to mate is reportedly so intense that, according to one study, more than 300 small male snakes die from suffocation at the bottom of these piles.

Narcisse Snake Dens 2014
At my old friend Terry's suggestion we trekked north out of Winnipeg into the Interlake so named due its located between Lakes Manitoba and Winnipeg. Our destination was the red-sided garter snake dens just north of Narcisse on Hwy #17 though neither of us are particularly fond of snakes. It was the phenomenon we were looking for.
The day was cloudless and warm, a perfect day to escape the Hive. Immediately upon our arrival a friendly and informative snake lady who works for the site gave us some information about the most active dens - today it was 2 and 3. There are four dens. The late spring has put the emergence of the snake population back about a month, she explained, so we can expect snakes to still emerge for the rest of May into June. She mentioned the wood ticks are out so stay on the trail. I just did a tick check of my body and turned up none.
The limestone trails to the dens are an easy hike across flat land and completely wheelchair accessible. The viewing areas sets the visitor above and apart from the dens below, well out of each other's way. Snakes moving in the dry pit created a constant low rustle.
Although the snakes haven't eaten since last summer, their first imperative is biological - to mate. For that purpose male garter snakes wait to the mouth of the den for females to emerge. They throng the female creating a passionate mating tangle that moves across the ground, up the side of the pit then tumbles back down. Today there were small clusters, no large mating balls of hundreds of snakes.
We passed two school buses of kids coming from visits to the snake dens and there were at least a dozen cars in the lot. But there was no crowd, just the happy, enthralled voices of kids discovering the snakes. As Terry pointed out, we seldom get to see the ancient pivotal moment in another creature's life when they are governed by The Old Rules of procreation.

Thousands of Red-sided Garter Snakes at the Narcisse Snake Dens
I visited the Narcisse Snake Dens, perhaps the largest congregation of snakes in the world, in the fall of 2013, as the Red-sided Garter snakes returned to their dens in advance of winter.
From Wikipedia: The Narcisse Snake Pits are located in the Rural Municipality of Armstrong about 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) north of Narcisse, Manitoba, Canada. The dens are the winter home of tens of thousands of red-sided garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis). These pits are the largest concentration in the world of this particular type of snake. Their winter dens are subterranean caverns formed by the area's water-worn limestone bedrock. In the spring, they come up from their dens to the snake pits, where they engage in mating rituals. Then they disperse into the nearby marshes for the summer.

Snakes in Mating Ball, Narcisse Snake Pits, Manitoba, Canada May 18 2013
When snakes mate, dozens upon dozens form a large, writhing ball. In Narcisse, Manitoba, Canada, several snake dens are in a wildlife preserve where visitors can watch the spectacle. Thousands of snakes fill the dens, and sometimes, smaller mating balls break off and approach humans. It only occurs for a few days each year, but's an amazing sight!
