Explore Narrabri Region
Renowned for the production of some of the world’s highest quality wheat, cotton, fat lambs and beef and home to several research facilities, the Narrabri Region is truly an agricultural wonderland. All this is joined by a wealth of excellent tourist attractions sure to keep visitors entertained for days. Coal seam gas exploration and coal mining are also now a part of the Region’s expanding economic base. These industries have created diverse employment and ancillary business opportunities.
The Newell and Kamilaroi Highways run through the Narrabri Region, bringing people from all compass points. With easy access, major attractions, top rate facilities and accommodation, many conferences and high profile performers are drawn to the area.
One glimpse of a clear night sky will leave you with no doubts as to why this region is known as “Big Sky” country. Star-filled night’s skies have facilitated the growth of the CSIRO Australia Telescope Compact Array, whose six radio telescopes are gleaming beacons of scientific advancement. The natural wonder of Mt Kaputar National Park will keep bushwalkers enthralled; search for the Yowie in the Pilliga, the largest forest in NSW; or simply view the picturesque patchwork of seemingly endless fields of cotton and wheat which are sure to impress. Add the Pilliga Artesian Bore Baths, Narrabri Fish Farm, Yarrie Lake, historical museums, craft shops, The Crossing Theatre, bird watching and fishing to the mix and you’re guaranteed many fun-filled days.
Our Visitor Information Centre is here to help you and, with a great selection of local souvenirs, historical books and delicious regional produce, is an essential stop on your Narrabri Region itinerary.
Kamilaroi Stories at the Visitor Information Centre
In 2008 when the Narrabri Shire Tourism Plan was in development stage, consultation with the Kamilaroi Elders and National Parks and Wildlife identified the need for a Sharing Stories project. The Narrabri Shire Visitor Information Centre engaged with leading digital designers Tilt & Co to create a new way to capture and record the Kamilaroi Stories of the Narrabri Shire. Our most important objective for this initiative is to ensure that the stories and characters of the Kamilaroi could be communicated to the travelling public using the latest state of the art medium available.
