SANDY RIVER AND RANGELEY LAKES RAILROAD MAINE NARROW GAUGE RAILROAD 52154 MD
This impressive silent movie shows the Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad. This line was among the first of a number of 2 foot (610mm) narrow gauge railroads to be built within the state of Maine. Dating to 1879 the railroad connected the towns of Strong, Phillips and Farmington. It was a common carrier railroad that operated approximately 112 miles (180 km) of track in Franklin County, Maine. Although abandoned in the mid 1930s a piece of the railroad has been rebuilt within the town of Phillips, 128 Bridge Street, where a museum occupies the area with a short stretch of track restored. The film was photographed in the 1930s towards the end of its operation.
Highlights include:
00:25 Railbus at Phillips
01:24 Farmington meet with the standard gauge Maine Central
02:35 Snow scenes with steam engines
05:39 Mainline trains between Farmingting and Phillips, making a connection with the Kingfield Branch train
09:00 Scenes at Strong, dismantling of track
12:41 Phillips scenes
14:09 In May 1935 the remaining portions of the railroad were sold for scrap. On May 30 the last trains operated.
14:30 Numbers 18 and 23 coming out of engine house. #23 was a Baldwin 2-6-2 built in 1913. It was the largest 2 foot gauge engine in the United States. #18 was built by MEC in 1916 and also 2-6-2. Probably the last operating SR&RL engine.
18:49 junction at South Strong

The Back Shop at the California State Railroad Museum - 2019 Narrow Gauge Convention
The Railway and Locomotive Historical Society of Sacramento has been collecting locomotives and railroad equipment since 1930 and this is the backbone of the California State Railroad Museum.
But most of the collection is stored and restored in the old Southern Pacific Shops near the museum. The back shop is NEVER open to the public, but as one of the members of the historical society was also involved in the National Narrow Gauge Convention, a few participants in the convention were able to see the back shop and collection.
The museum staff NEVER allows people of groups to get in so PLEASE DO NOT ASK. We were told NOT to video the collection, and not to share any photos on the channel, and we are not showing you those images. What we are using here are photos from others and other web sites already available online. The reason they do not want photos on social media is simply because of their zero access policy. Nuff said.
HOWEVER, the back shop will be open in the future as a public part of the museum, to be called the Museum of Railroad Technologies. The entire old CP and SP shop area is being developed into a wonderfull mixed-use urban center. Construction is underway now, and we show that as well as future plans!

Maine Two Foot Railroads
Thought you might appreciate this part of a video I have had in my collection for some time about Edaville. It is in two parts about two hours each. It was part of a 20 hour compilation of videos (converted from VHS?) from unnamed companies. You might find it by searching for the rather obvious name of Steam Trains on Amazon or elsewhere.
I have been informed of the name of the copyright holder of this snippet of the two hour video and am attempting to contact them for permission to leave it up.
Down the Mountain Oct 8 2018
October 8, 2018 - a work train traverses the Mountain Extension of the WW&F Railway Museum in Alna, Maine. All track shown was hand-laid in the prior 3 days by volunteers from all over the United States. Total track laid was 1430 feet.
The video starts just past Location 1 - which was the prior end of track, approximately 650 feet from the current end of public train service at the Top of the Mountain.
At 1:50, the train reaches The Slide, Location 4. The repair at this location required a significant amount of fill, where the former right-of-way washed away into the valley below.
At 2:30, Location 6, the Pinch Point is reached. This was the most significant repair needed along this stretch of track, where the line needed to be relocated and a retaining wall built, within 20 feet of Trout Brook, a protected waterway and in the midst of the conservation land of the Trout Brook Preserve. All repairs along the Mountain Extension were approved by federal, state, and local agencies.
The video ends as the new end of track is in sight. 900 feet further, the roadbed reaches the crossing of Trout Brook, where the relocated Moose Brook Bridge has been erected. Track will reach and cross the bridge in 2019, and public train service will begin down the mountain in 2021.
For your reference, there is a link to a map of the Mountain Extension in the comments below.

Narrow Gauge Trains
The power and allure of steam trains come in all shapes and sizes; some quite a bit smaller than average. But has size ever been an issue when it comes to doing the job of their standard gauge siblings?
Come join us on this extraordinary journey, as we not only explore SIX narrow gauge railroads but also investigate how they came to be many decades ago, and why they are still with us today.

Šargan Eight (Serbia) Narrow Gauge Railway - Mokra Gora to Šargan Vitasi
We join our chartered train for a ride over the Šargan Eight Railway (Serbia) with a class 83 steam locomotive No.83-052. The former East Bosnian railway with a gauge of 760 mm (2 ft 5 15⁄16 in) was an important part of the narrow-gauge main line from Sarajevo to Belgrade closed in 1974. The section over the Šargan pass was rebuilt between 1999 and 2003 by the Serbian Ministry of Tourism and the Yugoslav state railway JŽ, now the Serbian railways (Železnice Srbije) with help from a famous Bosnian film director Emir Kusturica who had the town of Drvengrad (near the Šargan Eight station on Mokra Gora) built for one of his movies. Firing up and running Two Foot Gauge Steam Locomotives - Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railroad
The Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railroad was a two-foot narrow gauge common carrier railroad that operated from 1894 until 1933. The line ran from Wiscasset in the south, to Albion and Winslow in the north, never making it to either Waterville or Farmington. The Great Depression brought about the railroad’s scrapping in 1937.
The WW&F Railway Museum was founded in 1989 to restore and rebuild the original railroad. 2.5 miles of railroad have been rebuilt to date, plus original cars and a locomotive.
This video, shot in January of 2017 features beautiful winter railroading scenes of days gone by. Featuring WW&F locomotive #9 (former Sandy River and Rangley Lakes #5 and 6) and visiting locomotive #3 originally from the Monson Railroad. Both are 0-4-4 Forney type locomotives.
Highlights include the new turntable, double headers, a flying cut-off of a helper locomotive, yard switching, and more.
