Description de la ligne

Narrow Gauge Steam in Poland
Since fewer and fewer narrow gauge locomotives are now serviceable it’s become very quiet around the Polish narrow gauge lines. However, the situation may become slightly better in 2016. The line at Znin is really very nice and their loco is too.
Our focus lies on authentic trains which could have been seen some 20 to 35 years ago on Polish narrow gauge lines. As far as possible we’ll replace the names of the new owners with the original PKP (Polish State Railway) lettering. As usual we’ll use the beautiful early morning light to be rewarded with steam exhaust from the morning chill and we’re also planning some night shots. Sunrise in Poznan is at 05.33, sunset at 20.09 hrs (April 25th).
Line Description
Znin, the former Zniner Kreisbahn (600 mm)
Except for seasonal tourist traffic this once large railway network ceased regular operation in the mid 1990’s. The first tourist train ran here as early as the late 1970’s. Unfortunately, almost all the coaches have been rebuilt as colourful, large windowed or open tourist coaches which have nothing in common with the regular trains, so we cannot use them for our train.
Of the once 76 km line, there remains only 12 km, from Znin (Znin) to Gasawa (Gonsawa). Our locomotive will be Px38 805. This 0-8-0 is painted in black, as it used to be in its last years of regular use. It was painted green for a number of years in tourist operation as well as some years in regular service.
The museum of the railway is in Wenecja. Virtually all locos there are painted green which was the common colour of a large part of the Polish steam loco fleet.
The line passes though rural countryside, mostly flat but with a few hilly parts. Large fields, little lakes, small forests and narrow roads are the surroundings of our line.
Znin has only one serviceable Px38 steam locomotive. There is a second serviceable steam loco in Znin, a 0-6-0 type “Las”. This type of locomotive was in use mainly for shunting and serving the sugar mill in Znin, but rarely on the line.

Znin Narrow Gauge Train Ride -Things To Do In Poland
Visit for narrow gauge train information, models of trains and buildings.
The Znin narrow gauge railroad, which was built to serve the sugar industry, now provides recreational rides to visitors to the Biskupin Archaeological Museum, Wenecja train Museum, and Znin itself.
For the most part, people board the train after visiting theBiskupin archaeological Museum The museum is a life-size model of an iron age settlement. It is discussed in another of our videos.
The train ride is very pleasant and scenic. The rails run alongside the road from Biskupin Wwnecja where there is a narrow gauge train Museum. People who have visited Biskupin by car often leave there and take the train to the museum, Znin and back.
And that is probably a wise thing to do because there is plenty of parking at Biskupin and very little at Wenecja.
Actually the entire train ride is quite long if one goes from the begining to the end. But for the most part traffic is between the Venezia museum and the Biscoe been Museum. Complete information about the Znin narrow gauge train line is in our site at steamtraininfo.com
Across the road there are the remains of a castle which played a part in the town taking the name Wenecja - Venice. The castle was built between the three local lakes and was very important in controlling the area.
.
The engines on this train line used to be steam powered but now the line uses diesel engines designated Lyd2.
Znin narrow gauge railway - short clip
The Znin narrow gauge railway has the distinction of being Poland's first 'museum railway'. In 1972 -- inspired by the setting up of the n.g. 'skansen' at Wenecja by the Museum of the Palucka region -- PKP started running trains for tourists and enthusiasts on the Żnin-Wenecja-Biskupin-Gąsawa section.
The line dates back to 1894 and at its height the railway comprised 5 lines with a total route length of 77 km. Ordinary scheduled passenger services were abandoned in 1962 and the network was substantially reduced between 1972 and 1978. In 2001 PKP abandoned all its surviving n.g. lines and in 2002 the line was taken over by the Znin District Council and Gasawa municipal council.
In June 2009 the line was taken over by the Magna Polonia investment fund. Since then facilities for passengers have improved and locomotives, rolling stock and track refurbished and upgraded.
This short video clip was recorded on a Panasonic GH2 camera during a visit by British Railway enthusiasts to the line on 14 July, 2011.

Not far from Bydgoszcz in Poland there is the narrow gauge railway (600 mm) Żnin–Gąsawa. In former times this line was part of an extended network. Fertilizers and agricultural produchts were transported, sugar beets to the sugar factory, and there was some passenger traffic. The line Żnin–Gąsawa has been preserved as a museum railway, and the trains are used by many tourists. Half way along the line there is the village of Wenecja. Here you can visit a museum displaying many 600 mm vehicles. Near Biskupin there is an open air museum of an old Slaw settlement which is also of touristical interest.
At the end of the photo show there are two images of the normal gauge station of Żnin. The line to Inowroclaw was closed in 2004. At present, Żnin cannot be reached from other parts of the PKP railway network. Meanwhile, plans for a reactivation of the line to Bydgoszcz are discussed.
All photos were made on July 30, 2001.

An American Railfan in Poland: 600mm Znin Tourist Railroad
In this installment of ARinP, we visit the 600mm gauge Znin Tourist Railway. Like the Silverton, Cass and Strasburg Railroads, this is a class operation. Its route includes a 600mm gauge railroad museum, the ruins of a castle with a dark past, and a world class archeological site.
IMHO, not many American rail enthusiasts realize the number and the quality of railfan experiences that are to be found scattered throughout Poland. Some have a vague knowledge of the Wolsztyn Experience, and a few of us have even enjoyed it, but few realize that it is possible to enjoy a great railfan holiday in Poland without even visiting Wolsztyn -- although I can't imagine why any railfan would go to Poland and not visit Wolsztyn. My goal in this series of videos (don't know yet how many there will be) is to share with my compatriots the railfan highlights of my visits to Poland in 2000 and 2003. I hope they will be interesting, entertaining, and maybe even inspire some of you to see it for yourself.
