Arvamusfestival 2018: European Culture Capital 2024 - for whom and why?

Why to apply for European Capital of Culture? The 2024 Capital of Culture can again be from Estonia and interest in this title has been shown by Narva, Tartu, Pärnu and Kuressaare. What is the benefit for the local community of being a Culture Capital? What about artists and authors or culture managers? What is the impact of this title before and after the Capital of Culture year? How to involve the community and have good cooperation between authorities as well as at the grass-roots level? What is the impact of the title of the Culture Capital on the region's and state's image in the long term?

The debate took place at Arvamusfestival (Opinion festival) 2018 in Paide, Estonia, at democracy area.

Democracy area was one of the gifts of the Nordic Council of Ministers´office in Estonia to the Estonia 100th jubilee year.

Arvamusfestival is part of the Democracy festivals network, supported by the Nordic Council of Ministers.

Old Narva – A Photo Positioning Puzzle (Sitsim DEMO VI)

This video shows the Old Narva app in use on location. The Old Narva app demonstrates a new way of reusing historical photos from digital archives by means of Augmented Reality. By adding elements of gameplay digitized photos are employed to access a reconstruction of the historical square.

The baroque town of Old Narva was completely destroyed during World War II. Today only the rebuilt Town Hall remains. In the Old Narva application we have reconstructed the buildings around the Town Hall Square (Raekoja Plats).

To experience what the old square looked like with you iPhone or iPad you need to solve a 'photo positioning puzzle'. We have selected six historical photos of the buildings around the square and you need to find the original position and orientation of the photographer when the pictures were taken, some time back in the 1930s. Start with the picture of the Town Hall itself and follow the guiding instructions on the screen.

When all the photos have been placed and oriented correctly you will be rewarded with a simulation of what the Raekoja Plats looked like more that 80 years ago.

The Old Narva application is a proof-of-concept experiment developed as part of the Cross Motion Interreg project. It has been developed as a collaboration between the SitsimLab-project (Dept. of Media and Communication, University of Oslo), Tag of Joy, CodeGrind AB and University of Tallinn.

The relationship between Russia and the European Union has become especially tense after the events in Ukraine in 2014. These events have also prompted discussions about the stability, loyalty and state of mind of populations living at the edges of the two geopolitical powers. One such location is the EU-Russia border town of Narva. The influence of the Russian media and other Russian sources of information on the people of Narva is a common theme of discussion in the foreign and security policy community.
What do people in Narva think of the tensions between Russia and the EU? What is their main concern in the new security situation? What do they consider to be their main guarantees of security: the presence of NATO troops; a job; a good education; access to healthcare; or good relationship with the rest of Estonia and Estonians? Battle of Narva 1944 - Tannenberg line defence and battle of the Blue hills

The battle of the blue hills was a part of the battle for Narva. Defending the Tannenberg line was Felix Steiner’s III SS corps with volunteer units from Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Norway and Estonia. Assaulting the line was the Russian 2nd Shock army. Well it has been a fair while since my last video but I thought I would bring you something interesting that had happened for me.
I went to Tallinn, Estonia, to meet with the Estonian LGBT+ Association and take part in the launch of their school climate research. They carried out their research in collaboration with GLSEN and I got to meet the chair person of The Global Alliance for LGBT+ Education (GALE).
It was an amzaing few days of travelling and tkaing in history, information and making new friends. I have really enjoyed it.
