New Nazca Lines Found in Peru | Ancient Architects
Etched into the high desert of southern Peru more than a millennium ago, the enigmatic Nasca Lines continue to capture our imagination. But recently, using drone cameras, scientists have discovered new spectacular line drawings in Southern Peru – and they are much older than the famous lines of the Nasca province.
Until this recent discovery, we knew of more than a thousand of these line drawings, also known as geoglyphs or ground drawings, that sprawl across the sandy soil of the Nasca province – a little-understood practice that some believe was to encourage rainfall, whilst others think they may represent star constellations, although all the ideas remain speculative.
Now, Peruvian archaeologists have discovered more than 50 new examples of these mysterious desert monuments in the adjacent Palpa Province, traced onto the earth’s surface in lines almost too fine to see with the human eye. With the help of drones, archaeologists have mapped them in never-before-seen detail. Watch this video to find out more.

Peru (part 3): Nasca Lines and Nazca Mummies
Our further travels in South america, Peru, take us on to the famous Nasca, famous of course for the Nazca lines. giant shapes, things and animals carved into the sand thousands of years ago. After some Googling I found a hotel who was really cheap but had good reviews, and had connections in Nasca so got us a great deal on our Nasca lines flight. He also told us about the Mummies.
Something I never knew about was the NAsca mummies just outside of town, also thousands of years old and incredibly well preserved, I would definitely call them a must see if you are going to Nasca, and our guide was great with all the info he gave us.
The Nasca flight itself was fun, jumping on such a small plane, and the Nazca lines although a little underwhelming (so much smaller than they were in my imagination) were still cool to see, as cool though was the impressive landscape form the plane, worth the $70 each but temper expectations I would say.
There are a few other things to see around Nasca, but we decided just to jump on a bus and continue our journey. Next stop, Cusco!

143 New Nazca Lines Discovered in Peru with the help of A.I. Technology | Ancient Architects
Huge thanks to Michael Wolf for alerting me about this story!
A team of Japanese researchers from Yamagata University and IBM Research have discovered an incredible 143 stunning geoglyphs, etched into the desert in southern Peru around the enigmatic Nazca Lines.
It is yet another example of how technology is assisting archaeology because a number of images were found using state-of-the-art AI technology developed by IBM, finds that were then confirmed with an on-site investigations.
The geoglyphs include humans, birds, camels, cats and other animals and were found between 2016 and 2018. They were identified through fieldwork and analysing high-resolution 3D data and aerial photography. Incredibly, one geoglyph in particular was solely discovered with AI technology, without the aid of humans, making it the first geoglyph discovered by an AI.
Back in April 2018 I reported in a video that Peruvian archaeologists in the Palpa province of Peru had discovered more than 50 new geoglyphs ( so this new discovery by the Japanese team builds on the ever-expanding line of study.

This video presentation features the Nazca Lines of Peru.
The Nazca Lines are a collection of giant geoglyphs—designs or motifs etched into the ground—located in the Peruvian coastal plain about 250 miles (400 kilometers) south of Lima, Peru. Created by the ancient Nazca culture in South America, and depicting various plants, animals, and shapes, the 2,000-year-old Nazca Lines can only be fully appreciated when viewed from the air given their massive size. Despite being studied for over 80 years, the geoglyphs—which were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994—are still a mystery to researchers.
There are three basic types of Nazca Lines: straight lines, geometric designs and pictorial representations.
There are more than 800 straight lines on the coastal plain, some of which are 30 miles (48 km) long. Additionally, there are over 300 geometric designs, which include basic shapes such as triangles, rectangles, and trapezoids, as well as spirals, arrows, zig-zags and wavy lines.
The Nazca Lines are perhaps best known for the representations of about 70 animals and plants, some of which measure up to 1,200 feet (370 meters) long. Examples include a spider, hummingbird, cactus plant, monkey, whale, llama, duck, flower, tree, lizard and dog.
The Nazca people also created other forms, such as a humanoid figure (nicknamed “The Astronaut”), hands and some unidentifiable depictions.

Description:
Nazca Lines, Nazca, Ica, Peru, South America
The Nazca Lines are a series of ancient geoglyphs located in the Nazca Desert in southern Peru. They were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. The high, arid plateau stretches more than 80 kilometres (50 mi) between the towns of Nazca and Palpa on the Pampas de Jumana about 400 km south of Lima. Although some local geoglyphs resemble Paracas motifs, scholars believe the Nazca Lines were created by the Nazca culture between 800bc and 800 AD. The hundreds of individual figures range in complexity from simple lines to stylized hummingbirds, spiders, monkeys, fish, sharks, orcas, and lizards. The lines are shallow designs made in the ground by removing the reddish pebbles and uncovering the whitish/grayish ground beneath. Hundreds are simple lines or geometric shapes; more than seventy are zoomorphic designs of animals such as birds, fish, llamas, jaguar, monkey, or human figures. Other designs include phytomorphic shapes such as trees and flowers. The largest figures are over 200 metres (660 ft) across. Scholars differ in interpreting the purpose of the designs, but in general they ascribe religious significance to them. Other theories have been summarized as follows: The geometric ones could indicate the flow of water or be connected to rituals to summon water. The spiders, birds, and plants could be fertility symbols. Other possible explanations include: irrigation schemes or giant astronomical calendars. Due to the dry, windless, and stable climate of the plateau and its isolation, for the most part the lines have been preserved. Extremely rare changes in weather may temporarily alter the general designs. As of recent years, the lines have been deteriorating due to an influx of squatters inhabiting the lands. Archeologists, ethnologists, and anthropologists have studied the ancient Nazca culture to try to determine the purpose of the lines and figures. One hypothesis is that the Nazca people created them to be seen by their gods in the sky. Kosok and Reiche advanced a purpose related to astronomy and cosmology: the lines were intended to act as a kind of observatory, to point to the places on the distant horizon where the sun and other celestial bodies rose or set in the solstices. Many prehistoric indigenous cultures in the Americas and elsewhere constructed earthworks that combined such astronomical sighting with their religious cosmology, as did the later Mississippian culture at Cahokia in present-day United States. Another example is Stonehenge in England. But Gerald Hawkins and Anthony Aveni, experts in archaeoastronomy, concluded in 1990 that there was insufficient evidence to support such an astronomical explanation. Reiche asserted that some or all of the figures represented constellations. By 1998, Phyllis B. Pitluga, a protégé of Reiche and senior astronomer at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, had concluded that the animal figures were representations of heavenly shapes. But she contends that they are not shapes of constellations but of what might be called counter constellations, the irregular-shaped dark patches within the twinkling expanse of the Milky Way. Aveni criticized her work for failing to account for all the details. In 1985, the archaeologist Johan Reinhard published archaeological, ethnographic, and historical data demonstrating that worship of mountains and other water sources predominated in Nazca religion and economy from ancient to recent times. He theorized that the lines and figures were part of religious practices involving the worship of deities associated with the availability of water, which directly related to the success and productivity of crops. He interpreted the lines as sacred paths leading to places where these deities could be worshiped. The figures were symbols representing animals and objects meant to invoke the gods' aid in supplying water. The precise meanings of many of the individual geoglyphs remain unsolved as of 2013. Henri Stierlin, a Swiss art historian specializing in Egypt and the Middle East, published a book in 1983 linking the Nazca Lines to the production of ancient textiles that archeologists have found wrapping mummies of the Paracas culture. He contended that the people may have used the lines and trapezes as giant, primitive looms to fabricate the extremely long strings and wide pieces of textile that are typical of the area. By his theory, the figurative patterns (smaller and less common) were meant only for ritualistic purposes. This theory is not widely accepted, although scholars have noted similarities in patterns between the textiles and the Nazca Lines, which they take as sharing in a common culture. Phyllis Pitluga, senior astronomer at the Adler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum and a protégé of Reiche, did computer-aided studies of star alignments. She asserted that the giant spider figure is an anamorphic diagram of the constellation Orion.

Nasca lines
The Nazca Lines are a series of large ancient geoglyphs in the Nazca Desert, in southern Peru. The largest figures are up to 370 m long. Scholars believe the Nazca Lines were created by the Nazca culture between 500 BC and 500 AD The figures vary in complexity. Hundreds are simple lines and geometric shapes; more than 70 are zoomorphic designs of animals, such as birds, fish, llamas, jaguars, and monkeys, or human figures.
The flight duration is approximately 40 minutes. It is fairly safe now but there were accidents in the past. In fact this very same aircraft crashed the week after and all seven passengers including the pilot died

Peru Mysterious Nasca Lines
What is the Nazca Lines, nobody knows.Тhe Lines was dated between 400 BC and 600 AD.The lines made on the ground by removing the reddish pebbles and uncovering the whitish/grayish ground beneath. Some of the figures reach one hundred meters or more. The figures can be seen with the aid of flight.
The Nasca Lines
The Nasca Lines are a series of geoglyphs located in the Nasca Desert, a high arid plateau that stretches more than 80 kilometres (50 mi) between the towns of Nasca and Palpa on the Pampas de Jumana in Peru. Although some local geoglyphs resemble Paracas motifs, these are largely believed to have been created by the Nasca culture between 200 BCE and 700 CE. There are hundreds of individual figures, ranging in complexity from simple lines to stylized hummingbirds, spiders, monkeys, fish, sharks or orcas, llamas, and lizards.
The lines are shallow designs in the ground where the reddish pebbles that cover the surrounding landscape have been removed, revealing the whitish earth underneath. Hundreds are simple lines or geometric shapes, and more than seventy are natural or human figures. The largest are over 200 metres (660 ft) across. Scholars differ in interpreting what the lines were for but generally ascribe religious significance to them. The geometric ones could indicate the flow of water or be connected to rituals to summon water. The spiders, birds, and plants could be fertility symbols. Other possible explanations include: irrigation schemes, giant astronomical calendars, or landing for spaceships.[1]
The dry, windless, stable climate of the plateau has preserved the lines to this day, for the most part. Extremely rare changes in weather may temporarily alter the general designs.

The Mysterious Nazca Lines (Nasca lines) of Peru
Please like us on Facebook:
Stretching across the Nazca plains like a giant map or blueprint left by ancient astronauts, lie the famous Nazca Lines of Peru. Peru is associated with the Inca Civilization.
In the Peruvian Desert, about 200 miles south of Lima, there lies a plain between the Inca and Nazca Valleys. Across this plain, in an area measuring nearly 450 square kms, is an assortment of perfectly-straight lines, many running parallel, others intersecting, forming a grand geometric form. In and around the lines there are also trapezoidal zones, strange symbols, and pictures of birds and beasts all etched on a giant scale that can only be appreciated from the sky.
The figures come in two types: biomorphs and geoglyphs. The biomorphs are some 70 animal and plant figures that include a spider, hummingbird, monkey and a 1,000-foot-long pelican. The biomorphs are grouped together in one area on the plain. Some archaeologists believe they were constructed around 200 BC, about 500 years before the geoglyphs.
There are about 900 geoglyphs on the plain. Geoglyphs are geometric forms that include straight lines, triangles, spirals, circles and trapezoids. They are enormous in size. The longest straight line goes nine miles across the plain. The most well-known being is The Astronaut at 32m in length discovered by Maria Reiche in the 1960s.
There are also huge geoglyphs in Egypt, Malta, United States (Mississippi and California), Chile, Bolivia and in other countries. But the Nazca geoglyphs, because of their numbers, characteristics, dimensions and cultural continuity, , forming a most impressive, as well as enigmatic, archeological group.
The Nazca Lines were allegedly made by removing the iron-oxide coated pebbles which cover the surface of the desert. When the gravel is removed, they contrast with the light color underneath. In this way the lines were drawn as furrows of a lighter color.
The Nazca plain is virtually unique for its ability to preserve the markings upon it, due to the combination of the climate (one of the driest on Earth, with only twenty minutes of rainfall per year) and the flat, stony ground which minimizes the effect of the wind at ground level. With no dust or sand to cover the plain, and little rain or wind to erode it, lines drawn here tend to stay drawn.
