Konerirajapuram || Uma Maheswarar Temple || Nagapattinam DT
Uma Maheswarar Temple of Konerirajapuram in the Nagapattinam district in the South Indian state of Tamilnadu, is a historical temple dedicated to Shiva. Shiva is worshiped as Uma Maheswarar, and is represented by the lingam and his consort Parvati is depicted as Anga Vala Nayagi. Originally built by the Cholas, it was later renovated by the Madurai Nayaks and rulers. The major complexes in the temple are believed to be built during the 8th century by the Chola king Aditya I and his grandson Raja Raja Chola I. The temple is noted for its massive Natarajar Bronze Idol.
The temple has six daily rituals at various times from 6:00 a.m. to 12 pm and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., and twelve yearly festivals on its calendar. The Chittirai festival during the Tamil month of Chittirai (April - May) is celebrated for fifteen days, portraying the various incidents associated with the temple legend. The presiding deity is revered in the 7th century Tamil Saiva canonical work, the Tevaram, written by Tamil saint poets known as the nayanars and classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam. The temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of the Government of Tamilnadu.
The present temple was constructed in the 10th century AD by Kandarathitha chola and his wife Sembian Maa Devi. Kandaraadhithan is the grandfather of the famous Raja Raja Chola. He is well known for his service to Lord Shiva, by building huge temples in his empire.
The temple is open from 6.00 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and from 4.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.
The temple is located at about 22 kms from Kumbakonam on the Karaikal route. The devotee has to get down at S. Pudur. The temple is south of this place. This Shivastalam is located 10 km south of Tiruvidaimarudur - on the road between Kumbhakonam and Karaikkal.
This Shivasthalam temple can be reached by travelling upto S. Pudur on the Kumbakonam - Karaikkal road. One branch road from S. Pudur goes to Vadamattam village. Travel on that road and reach Koneri Rajapuram Cross road stop. The temple is about 1 Km from this cross road stop. Tirukkaruvili Kottittai Shivasthalam is about 2 1/2 Kms from here.
In the Poonthottam – Nachiarkoil route, after reaching Koonthalur at 14 kms from Poonthottam, a little diversion to right (north) for another 5 kms through the village road with green paddy fields on both sides will take us to this sthalam.

Thirunallam @ Konerirajapuram: As per the very own words of 'Appar' , only who have poorva janma punya will be able to visit this temple. This place is no less than the Kailasam itself. Here we see a 'suyambu nataraja of 8 feet with parvathi'. The temple was originally called thirunallam as the place got submerged into the grounds, Lady Sembiam Mahadevi (Grand mother of Raja Raja Cholan) renovated and established this as pacca stone temple. The legend says that while the King wanted to make out huge Nataraja Statue, despite all efforts of the sthapathi, he could not make one beyond 3 feet; when the deadline date was given by king to do this job, the worried sthapathi prayed to Lord and Lord shiva and parvathi came in front in manushya roopa and asked for little water; out of his frustration caused by the king, the sthapathi told them to drink the liquid he kept ready to make the natraraj statue (impon - pancha loka liquid) and then, Lord and parvathi drank the same and the very moment became a beautiful Nataraja & Parvathi statue of 8 feet. The King disbeliving it, put a stroke on the staute and witnessed the bleeding; the same time, he got affected with Kushta roga (Venkushtam) ; Having done a mistake, he prayed to Lord and as per the celestial order, did poojas for the Lord Vaidyanatha swami the suyambu linga and got cured of his illness.
This is the only temple where one can see 'swayambu nataraja of impon statue' .... the marks of king's stroke, a mole and skin colour patch in one of the hands of Lord Nataraja and the GREAT smile on Lord Parvathi's face are just remarkable and no word can describe the real beauty of the same.Description by KONERIRAJAPURAM V.A.VINOTH (meetvinoth.civil@gmail.com),meetvinoth.civil@yahoo.com)

Anathandavapuram sivan temple. Histroy
Once upon a time there was a hermit by the name Ananda. He was a devout Saivite. Being a person of yogic abilities, he would go to any shrine of Shiva of his choice flying through the sky. Daily he used to go to Rameswaram by air to take a bath in the sea and then go to Chidambaram from there again by air. From Chidambaram, he used to go to Mahendramalai for meditation. This had become his daily routine. By night he would return to his village of Anandathandavapuram. This was going on for quite some time.
One cold morning Lord Shiva decided to test his devotee. It was Thiruvathirai, an auspicious day for Shiva puja and all the Shiva temples wore a festive look. Ananda was about to leave for his daily routine when the skies poured out. Rain started lashing and it didn't stop and the hermit couldn't use his yogic abilities too on this day. The rain didn't stop even at night and Ananda couldn't have a glimpse of his Lord the whole day. He was very angry too with nature for having spoilt his day. Immediately, he decided to end his life as he couldn't have darshan of the Lord that day. As he was about to kill himself, Shiva and his consort appeared before him and also danced for him, the ananda thandavam (Happy Dance). Since Shiva danced in this village, it got is present name of Anandathandavapuram, a.k.a Anathandapuram.
