Way To Heaven (Sikkim-Aritar-Juluk-Silk Route-Nathang)
Sikkim is a state in northeast India, bordered by Bhutan, Tibet and Nepal. Part of the Himalayas, the area has a dramatic landscape that includes India’s highest mountain, 8,586m Kangchenjunga. Sikkim is also home to glaciers, alpine meadows and thousands of varieties of wildflowers. Steep paths lead to hilltop Buddhist monasteries such as Pemayangtse, which dates to the early 1700s.
Nathang Valley- The Magnum Opus Of The Mountains|| Old Silk Route || East Sikkim || Arin Diaries
Gnathang or Nathang village is one of the remotest Tibetian habitations in Eastern Himalaya. Nathang's weather is usually a riot of colors through the rest of the year. The valley continues to remain a dynamic spot that may be engulfed in fog one day yet turn out bright and vibrant
the next.
It requires only ten minutes walk to reach the spot to witness the panoramic view of the
entire Eastern Himalayas with the magnificent Kanchenjunga range, some parts of Bhutan,
China, the hills of Darjeeling and River Brahmaputra. The Chinese watchtowers on Jelep-La
pass are clearly visible from Nathang Valley. The other places worth visiting around are
Zuluk, Lungthung, Thambi Viewpoint, Old Baba Mandir, Padamchen, Genmochen and Tukla
Valley. The beautiful lakes like Jorepokri, Green Lake, Tsomgo Lake, Memencho Lake and
Kupup lake are within 1-hour driving distance.
Few homestays have come up in the valley with the help of Government which are equipped
with all the modern amenities for the comfortable stay.
Nathang Valley experiences extreme winters and the temperature remains well below the
freezing point throughout most of the season. Precipitation in the form of snowfall can be
witnessed on a frequent basis, and for those who enjoy the snow and chilly climate, this
may be a great time to visit. However, because of the heavy snowfall, most of the valley
gets buried under thick layers of snow and the whole Silk Route is shut down during this
time. The duration is usually between January to March, but the closing and re-opening of
most roads depends largely on the weather conditions.

Captain Baba Harbhajan Singh (30 August 1946 – 4 October 1968) was an Indian army soldier. He is revered as the Hero of Nathula by soldiers of the Indian army, who built a shrine in his honour. He was accorded the status of saint by believers who refer to him as the Baba (saintly father). Many of his faithful - chiefly Indian army personnel posted in and around the nathu la and the Sino-Indian border between the state of sikkim and tibet autonomous region - have come to believe his spirit protects every soldier in the inhospitable high-altitude terrain of the Eastern Himalayas. As with most saints, the Baba is believed to grant favours to those who revere and worship him. He is said to be protecting the country even after death.

On this particular day we have started our journey from Aritar and our plan was to visit Aritar Lake which haven't visited last day but due to heavy rain we haven't visited the Aritar Lake. Due to heavy rain we have started our journey late also around 9:00 AM.
We was initially going slow because of heavy rain and slush created by the rain. At around 11:30 AM, we reached first check post where we entered our vehicle information and shown our permits.
After riding for 2 hrs we reached beautiful Nathang Valley where we taken some good pics. From their we continued our journey to Nathula Pass. And in between we have stopped at a cafeteria for lunch.
We were unfortunate that because of India and China Tension Nathula Pass was closed for tourist. So we escaped visit to Nathula and continued our journey towards Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir where we stopped for quit some time.
From their our next destination was Changu Lake where we stopped for 5-10 minutes because the day was going down. So we at last proceeded to Gangtok. We reached our hotel at 8:00 PM.
