Tianjin covers an area of nearly 12,000 square kilometers and has a population of 15 million people. China pollution hits the US west coast, ruining American effort to reduce ozone levels - TomoNews
BEIJING — A study published in Nature Geoscience claims the U.S.' effort to cut ozone levels have gone to waste due to pollution arriving on the west coast from China.
Observations of the phenomena were made using satellites coupled with computer models of how air-borne molecules travel in the lower atmosphere.
According to the study, from 2005 to 2010, the US managed to cut ozone-producing nitrous oxide emissions by 20 percent by imposing strict standards for motor vehicles and industry. During the same period of time, however, China's growth pushed its own ozone levels up by about 7 percent.
Half of the increase in China came from the ground up, while the other half descended from the stratosphere. Although the study says that some of that pollution may have been blown to China from India and other parts of Asia.
In the same way that the dominant westerly winds blow China's air pollution into the troposphere, straight across the Pacific Ocean, and into the United States, causing ozone levels to rise again.
According to the study lead researcher Willem Verstraeten, of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, local and national efforts to fight pollution could have a limited impact if the problem is not also dealt at an international level.
Our atmosphere is global rather than local, he was quoted by the Japan Times as saying.
High levels of pollution can cause respiratory problems, damage to crops and climate change.

Guangzhou Metro
Guangzhou Metro (simplified Chinese: 广州地铁; traditional Chinese: 廣州地鐵; pinyin: Guǎngzhōu Dìtiě; Jyutping: Gwong²zau¹ Dei⁶tit³) is the metro system of the city of Guangzhou in Guangdong Province of China. It is operated by the state-owned Guangzhou Metro Corporation and was the fourth metro system to be built in mainland China, after those of Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai.
The earliest efforts to build an underground rapid transit system in Guangzhou date back to 1960. In the two decades that followed, the project was brought into the agenda five times, but ended up abandoned each time due to financial and technical difficulties. Preparation of what would lead to today's Guangzhou Metro did not start until the 1980s, and it was not until 1993 that construction of the first line, Line 1, officially began. Line 1 opened four years later in 1997 with five stations in operation.

The number of deaths from the chemical plant explosion on March 21 in China’s Jiangsu province has risen to 78. More than 600 people have been injured and around 4,000 others were evacuated. Extreme high levels of toxic chemicals were found in nearby rivers while high levels of nitrogen oxide, which can cause respiratory problems, were detected 3.5 kilometres (0.6 miles) downwind from the blast site – almost twice the national air safety level for industrial zones. The Jiangsu Tianjiayi chemical plant has had records of violating work safety regulations in the past.

Dalian Software Park (simplified Chinese: 大连软件园; traditional Chinese: 大連軟件園; pinyin: Dàlián ruǎnjiàn yuán), also called DLSP, is an industrial zone, created in 1998 in the western suburbs of Dalian City, Liaoning Province, China, where many of the world's large and medium-sized IT-related companies have set up shop to do software development and information services. It is part of Dalian Hi-Tech Zone in the broader sense. While American and European companies typically have gone to Bangalore and other cities in India because of the English language capability, Japanese companies have gone to Dalian and other cities in China due to the Japanese language capability.
DLSP is owned by Dalian Software Park Co., Ltd., which was invested and established by Yida Group and is a professional service provider in business park development, management and operation. By the end of 2009, there were over 500 enterprises in the Dalian Software Park, 41 percent of which are foreign-funded. There are 37 Fortune 500 companies including IBM, HP, Accenture, Panasonic, Sony, Hitachi, NTT, Oracle, AVAYA, NEC, Fidelity, BT etc. In 2009, Dalian Software Park realized an annual sales income of RMB 20.2 billion, with an export value of USD 0.86 billion.Dalian is one of China's 11 National Software Industry Bases and one of five National Software Export Bases. The theme of this year's conference -- Culture: the Engine for Cities' Sustainable Development -- offers District leaders an opportunity to glean from the international community more information to aid Mayor Gray's sustainability efforts.
At the conference, Director Tregoning delivered a presentation at a plenary session on Culture and City Development Strategy where she shared information about the District's Sustainable DC initiative.
