ALBANIA: GOVERNMENT ACCUSED OF ILLEGALLY GIVING AWAY WORKS OF ART
Albanian/Nat
The Albanian government has been accused of illegally taking works of art out of the country's museums and offering them as gifts to foreign leaders.
A former museum director claims hundreds of precious and priceless artefacts dating as far back as the Ottoman and Roman Empires have gone missing from Albanian Museums since the fall of the communist dictatorship.
Some of the looted treasures have surfaced in England, where the unwitting recipients of gifts from the Albanian President Berisha include Queen Elizabeth and Britain's Prime Minister John Major.
Nestled in the Albanian hills, the Historical Museum of Kruja is one of dozens of in the country dedicated to housing the country's national heritage.
Albania's a country rich in cultural and religious history.
These icons date back as far as the 14th century.
And so far these pieces have escaped the fate of many other of Albania's national treasures.
Looting of the country's museums began in a frenzy during the political turmoil that stirred the country in 1990-91 when the former Communist regime fell.
Since then it has continued unabated - whole museums around the country emptied as buyers in Europe, Japan and the U-S provide a lucrative market.
The former director of the National Archaeological Museum and now leader of a political opposition party, claims government officials including the President are some of the most active participants in the trafficking of stolen Albanian artefacts.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Only the council of ministers have the right to give the final decision for the objects to be moved out of Albania. And as I know, it was not done for the art objects that President Berisha and his staff gave as a gift to some personalities in England
SUPER CAPTION: Neritan Ceka, former director of National Archaeological Museum
Neritan Ceka says Britain's Queen Elizabeth allegedly received an inlaid silver box as a gift from President Berisha during an official visit to London in 1994.
Britain's Agriculture Minister Douglas Hogg got a silver dagger similar to this piece, while Prime Minister John Major allegedly accepted an antique pistol.
The director of the Albanian National Museum in Tirana denies that government officials have helped themselves to treasures in his museum, while admitting that some artefacts deemed to have less historical value are for sale.
SOUNDBITE: (Albanian)
It is absolutely impossible to take something out of this museum. There is currently no law that permits this, and as the director of this museum I never heard that any high ranking official has taken art from any museum with, or following, an order from the government or someone in power. It is totally impossible, these are our treasures. What we have discovered through the years has been put in museums, other archaeological art with less historical value can be bought. They have artistic value, it's antique
SUPER CAPTION: Vilson Kuri, Director National Museum, Tirana.
The plundering of Albania's history and art has continued unchecked for six years.
The National Museum's former director believes flow should be stemmed starting with those pieces given away as gifts.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
For the people who receive presents in England it will be in their honour to bring back these presents, these gifts to the Albanian people
SUPER CAPTION: Neritan Ceka, former director of National Archaeological Museum
Judging by the current level of treasure looting, it won't be too long before Albania will have lost forever all of the treasures that embody its cultural heritage.

Gas pipeline unearths dozens of archaeological discoveries
(29 Sep 2018) LEADIN:
The construction of a major international gas pipeline has unearthed dozens of ancient archaeological sites in Albania.
More than 50 archaeologists are excavating hundreds of graves at one of the sites, thought to date back as far as Neolithic times.
STORYLINE:
At the village of Turan a team of young archaeologists is searching for remnants of Albania's ancient past.
The 50-member team has so far found some 900 skeletons in almost 1,000 graves, along with other objects dating from the Neolithic period, the Iron Age, the late Roman period and the Medieval period.
Senior archaeologist and leader of the team, Iris Pojani, says the burial ground found in Turan is one of the biggest cemeteries ever extracted in Albania.
It starts with an Iron Age cemetery from the 11th century B.C., to continue with the late Roman Age of the 3 to 7th century A.D..
It ends with more developed graves of the Medieval era of the 11-12th century.
It is a very complex site, archaeological site, because of its complexity. We have four kinds of different developments in one site, says Pojani.
First of all, the main site is a burial ground. We have three phases of cemetery. The first phase is Iron Age; the second one is used by the late antique community and medieval community later.
The discovery in Turan, 180 kilometres (110 miles) southeast of the capital Tirana, is part of some 30 sites already found during the works of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) that will bring gas from Azerbaijan to Turkey, through Greece to Albania, before heading to southern Italy via the Adriatic Sea.
The pipeline crosses through 215 kilometres (133 miles) of Albanian territory.
The work of the project, which is continuously monitored by the central authorities, cannot continue when a site is discovered unless the National Council of Archaeology, the country's top executive, gives permission.
Objects found in some of the graves show that they belonged to wealthy members of the community.
We have many finds. We discovered a lot of findings, jewellery, weapons. As you can see a lot of pottery. And weapons are spears, are some daggers, knives and maybe swords. We have a lot of jewellery like rings, earrings and amber and glass beads, a lot of them, Pojani says.
But the real surprising find, Pojani thinks, are the remains a Neolithic village found under graves belonging to the Iron Age.
Underneath the layer of the Iron Age we had a Neolithic settlement and we have discovered maybe a village and many, many artefacts related to this period, adds Pojani.
The findings will eventually be handed over to anthropologists for analysis.
DNA analysis can reveal what foods people ate at the time, how they lived and died and the structure of their communities.
The discovery is an opportunity for Albanian experts to improve their standards, says Arber Kadia, in charge of cultural heritage at the Trans Adriatic Pipeline.
TAP has given us an opportunity, as people of archaeology in Albania, to understand some of the best standards which otherwise in Albania have not been respected in the past. And in this way we hope that Albania (inaudible) have been enriched by this experience and then it will pass on to the institutions this heritage, Kadia says.
Young archaeologist Sabjan Hasani says he is already benefiting from the work.
It has been a great opportunity, a challenge in many ways, a growing opportunity and quite interesting experience, he says.

Former home of Albanian author Kadare becomes a museum | AFP
Ismail Kadare draws the curtain to bring a shaft of light into the Tirana apartment where he wrote furiously during the dark days of communism -- a space visitors can now explore first-hand after his former home was turned into a museum. During that time, the windows were covered with heavy drapes to shield their home from the paranoid eye of the communist regime led by former dictator Enver Hoxha, who painfully isolated Albania during his 40-year-reign.

Welcome to Albania (Tirana) - Documentary Films
Tirana, the heart and capital of Albania, like all other European metropolises has a never-ending movement and energy. With its clubs, pubs, cafes, and taverns, Tirana is worth to discover, both day and night. The value and hospitality shown towards tourists is something that will mark your journey not only in Tirana but also all over the country. There are different thoughts regarding the origin of the name of the city. Some think that it relates to Tyrrenia (a name of Etruscan origins), while other believe that it relates to the word Theranda (harvest), or to the Tirkan (a castle at the foot of Mount Dajti). Your own journey might begin by visiting the museums and the key spots such as Sheshi Skënderbej, where you will be able to see the Mosque of Et’hem Bey (built between 1798 and 1812) and the 35 m high Kulla e Sahatit (the Watch Tower), built in 1822 with a San Marco style cupola. Moreover, you can visit the famous Mosaic uncovered on the floor of an old Roman lodge. Its center configures the walls of the castle of the Roman emperor Justinian (A.D. 520). The monumental Tomb of Kapllan Pasha and the Ura e Tabakëve (a bridge constructed in the beginning of the 19th century, located on Bulevardi Zhan D’Ark) are other interesting place to visit. As a capital, Tirana has the country’s finest museums, theatres, and galleries representing the national arts. A visit to the National History Museum, the Archeological Museum, the private “Mezuraj Museum,” and the National Gallery of the Arts will leave wonderful memories. You can also pass a pleasant evening in the National Theatre or the Opera and Ballet Theatre.
For dining, Tirana will be glad to offer you both a rich traditional cuisine and a variety of foreign fares, from Italian to Chinese, . There are also several clubs and restaurants in Mount Dajti to discover and enjoy. There is the possibility to travel there by cable car, which is a very special experience. In the region of Tirana you may also visit the castles of Petrela and Preza, as well as some natural attractions, such as Pëllumbasi Cave, Shkalla e Tujanit, and much more.
