Bhaktapur Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Bhaktapur in Nepal.
Bhaktapur, also known as ‘the city of the pious’ is the third of the ancient royal cities in the thirty kilometer long Kathmandu Valley in the Kingdom of Nepal and also a Unesco World Heritage Sight. On both sides of Durbar Square are many precious art treasures but the city is also fully-functional and a ‘car free’ open air museum! The medieval city derived from a fortress complex and was later transformed into a palace area. At the western end of Durbar Square is Dvarikanath Mandir, a replica of the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu.Today, a huge pair of lions flank the entrance to the National Art Gallery and there are images of Hanuman and Narasimha.Vatsala Durga Mandir is a temple with a square, three-tiered base. This sacred building has a corridor set around a central Shikhara tower and its stairway is flanked by elephants and two fantastic horses. The number of the city’s small temples, shrines and dwellings of the gods is many and complex and they can be found at each crossroads and in every courtyard and doorway.Bhaktapur has also been immortalized in the movie, Little Buddha. For those interested in culture, the Kingdom of Nepal is a dream destination and Bhaktapur is a truly atmospheric journey into a rich and golden past.

I'm excited to be back in Nepal, a country I love and miss every day. Went out to explore UNESCO World Heritage Sites in KTM, gave a brief visit to a self-taught artist Lok Chitrakar who has been practicing Paubha for over forty years and tried my first laphing. It was so freakin bomb !!! wait let me rephrase that again, it was one of THE BEST food I had during my stay.

Bhaktapur Durbar Square - finest Newari architecture in Nepal
Bhaktapur Durbar Square is one of three Durbar Squares in the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The Bhaktapur Durbar Square is located in the current town of Bhaktapur, also known as Bhadgoan, which lies 13 km east of Kathmandu. While the complex consists of at least four distinct squares (Durbar Square, Taumadhi Square, Dattatreya Square and Pottery Square), the whole area is informally known as the Bhakapur Durbar Square and is a highly visited site in the Kathmandu Valley.
The Durbar Square proper houses the 55-window Palace which was constructed by King Jitamitra Malla and was home to royalty until 1769. It is now a national gallery. Close by is the Golden Gate which leads into Mulchok Court which is home to the Taleju Temple. This temple, like others in the main towns of the Kathmandu Valley, is dedicated to the goddess Taleju Bhawani and includes shrines to both the Taleju Bhawani and Kumari. Entrance to the temple is restricted to Hindus and the living goddess strictly cannot be photographed.
The Durbar square is surrounded by spectacular architecture and vividly showcases the skills of the Newari artists and craftsmen over several centuries. The royal palace was originally situated at Dattaraya square and was only later moved to the Durbar square location.
The Durbar square at Bhaktapur was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1934 and hence appears more spacious than the others, in Kathmandu and Patan.
Originally, there were 99 courtyards attached to this place, but now only 6 remain. Before the earthquake, there were 3 separate groups of temples. Currently, the square is surrounded by buildings that survived the quake.

BHAKTAPUR DURBAR SQUARE
Bhaktapur Durbar Square, located in the center of Bhaktapur city, is a conglomeration of pagoda and shikhara-style temples grouped around a fifty-five window palace of brick and wood. The square is one of the most charming architectural showpieces of the Valley as it highlights the ancient arts of Nepal. The golden effigies of kings perched on the top of stone monoliths, the guardian deities looking out from their sanctuaries, the wood carvings in every place-struts, lintels, uprights, tympanums, gateways and windows-all seem to form a well-orchestrated symphony. The main items of interest in the Durbar Square are:
The Lion Gate : Dating as far back as A.D. 1696, this gate is guarded on either side by two huge statues of lions. Alongside, there are two stone images of Bhairav (the dreadful aspect of Shiva) and Ugrachandi (the consort of Shiva in her fearful manifestation).
The Golden Gate : The Golden Gate is said to be the most beautiful and richly moulded specimen of its kind in the entire world. The door is surmounted by a figure of the goddess Kali and Garuda (the mythical man-bird) and attended by two heavenly nymphs. It is also embellished with mythical creatures of marvellous intricacy, In the words of Percy Brown, an eminent English art critic and historian, the Golden Gate is the most lovely piece of art in the whole Kingdom: it is placed like a jewel, flashing innumerable facets in the handsome setting of its surroundings. The gate was erected by King Ranjit Malla and is the entrance of the main courtyard of the Palace of Fifty-five Windows.
The Palace of Fifty-five Windows : This magnificent palace was built during the reign of King Yakshya Malla in A.D. 1427 and was subsequently remodelled by King Bhupatindra Malla in the seventeenth century. Among the brick walls with their gracious setting and sculptural design, is a balcony with Fifty-five Windows, considered to be a unique masterpiece of woodcarving.
The Art Gallery: The Art Gallery contains ancient paintings belonging to the Hindu and Buddhist traditions of various periods and descriptions. This gallery is open everyday except Tuesday.
The Statue of King Bhupatindra Malla: This statue showing King Bhupatindra Malla in the act of worship is set on a column facing the palace. Of the square's many statues, this is considered to be the most magnificent.

'Bhaktapur' the City of Devotees & Culture.
The third of the medieval city-states in the Kathmandu Valley, Bhaktapur was always described as the best preserved. Tragically, however, the 2015 earthquake caused terrible devastation and loss of life. Nevertheless, only a few temples were destroyed, there is still much to see here and tourism is vital to the community.
Bhaktapur is rich in architectural beauty, filled with ancient Hindu and Buddhist religious sites, and palaces and courtyards where tourists can easily spend days absorbing the traditions and culture of the Newars.
Bhaktapur's Durbar ('Royal') Square was added to the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1979.

Panorama 60's at BAC Art Cafe
Out & About this week is all about art. Modern Nepali art to be more precise.
We dropped by Bikalpa Art Centre, popularly known as BAC Art Cafe, at Pulchowk, to be part of their latest art exhibition titled, ‘Panorama 60’s: Pioneers of Nepali Modernism’.
The exhibition happens to be a panoramic showcase of post-1960s Nepali art, featuring work from eight artists who pioneered modern art in Nepal.
By analysing the works of the pioneers of Nepali modern art – Manoj Babu Mishra, Shashi Bikram Shah, Batsha Gopal Baidhya, Krishna Manandhar, Ramananda Joshi, Indra Pradhan, Gehendra Man Amatya, & Shashi Kala Tiwari – Panorama 60’s aims to enlighten the public on the emergence and development of modernism in Nepali art. Modern Nepali art happens to be an understudied area of artistic and cultural history. And, hence, the objective of this exhibition is to help fill that gap.

Purna P Hyoju at Buddhist Art Gallery
This is the last talk programme of Buddhist Art Gallery,Nepal.Senior Famous Newar Artist Purna P Hyoju had given a talk about the Significance and Characteristic of Museum Quality Traditional Newar Paubhas. He told the difference between Traditional and Contemporary Newar Paubhas.Development of styles of contemporary Newar paubhas are good but they must be based on Tradition. One can not create creation without tradition.Tradition means age preserved Styles not subjects.Paubhas are religious objects. So, one should not create Newar Paubhas blindly in the name of creating Contemporary Newar Paubhas without knowing religious and cultural values.Shreejan Rajbhandari asked whether Traditional Paubha is Style or Subject.Uday Charan Shrestha said only copying old Paubhas is not Tradition.Creation is also very important but they must be based on religious and traditional values.Pushpa Raj Vajracharya said if Paubhas are created for religious purpose. They must be based on iconography books. It is mentiond in many iconography books that if artist paint correctly according to iconography rule ,they create good karma.on the conterary they gain bad karma if they paint Gods mistakely without respecting iconography rules. The programme was very important to know the values of Traditional and Contemporary Newar Paubhas. All the participants had very actively participated and gained a very good knowledge about.Traditional and Contemporary Newar Paubhas. This talk is in Nepali language only.A slideshow of Purna P.Hyoju's masterpiece paubhas were also displayed.Rajendra Vajracharya said both Traditional and Contemporary Paubha are equally important.Considering differences and thinking one is superior than another is mere our misundrestanding.
