소피아의 국립해외미술관에서는 매주 특별한 공연이 열린다. 화려한 전통 자수로 장식된 의상을 입고 화음을 맞추는 여성들. 이들이 부르는 노래는 불가리아의 7개 지역에서 대대로 내려오던 민속음악인데 이렇게 여성들만의 합창단으로 만들어내는 화음은 불가리안 보이스라고 불린다. “불가리아 인구의 대부분이 여자이기 때문에 여자들이 더 많이 부르죠. 여러 명이 모여서 함께 부를 때 훨씬 예쁘고 강한 소리가 나옵니다. 그래서 노래를 더 멀리까지 내 보낼 수 있는 거죠.”
