Three Uses of the Knife -- an annual series of lectures and seminars around various topics of art organized in Vilnius since 2009, initiated by the team of contemporary art online magazine artnews.lt in collaboration with the Contemporary Art Centre (Vilnius) and the Art Information Centre of the National Gallery of Art (Vilnius).
Inspired by a cloud of recent discourses around the revival of the linguistic turn, or its modification into the narrative turn, as suggested by Dieter Roelstraete, this year's Three Uses of the Knife (re)turns its focus on language and oral communication.
Olof Olsson is an artist based in Copenhagen. In his youth Olof Olsson dabbled in journalism, documentary photography, and as a radio disc jockey. At university Olof studied languages, philosophy and translation theory. In 1992 Olof did his first exhibition, a fictive account of an American photographer, Joseph Slightly, and his adventures and sufferings during the first half of the 20th century. Since 2007 Olof is working with spoken performances.

The exhibition, held in the National Gallery of Art, showcases art objects with dedicated soundtracks created by famous contemporary Lithuanian musicians.
The Violin article is made of guns from criminal organizations in Mexico and accompanied with a soundtrack created by artist Gon.

Rokas Berziunas (b. 1983) graduated the National M. K. Ciurlionis School of Art (specialty - sculpture). In 2006 he obtained the degree of bachelor in Vilnius Academy of Arts, in specialty of interior design. Since 2005 he is actively engaged in acrylic pictorial art, organizes exhibitions. In 2014 became a member of Lithuanian Artists' Association.
From 1994 to 2002 he studied and graduated the National M. K. Ciurlionis School of Art (specialty -sculpture). In 2006 he obtained the degree of bachelor in Vilnius Academy of Arts, in specialty of interior design. In 2014 became a member of Lithuanian Artists' Association.
Rokas Berziūnas is quite young, but already recognized artist; his successful exhibitions keep attracting attention of art collectors in Lithuania and abroad. Since 2005 he is actively engaged in acrylic pictorial art, organizes exhibitions and participates in painting plenaries. He has also arranged more than fifteen solo exhibitions.

AUSTRALIJOS MENININKĖS JAZMINOS CININAS PARODA „EGLĖ IR VILKMERGĖS“ / “EGLĖ AND THE SHE-WOLVES“

Sausio 24 d., penktadienį, 17 val. kviečiame į Jazminos Cininas parodos „Eglė ir vilkmergės“ atidarymą. Renginyje dalyvaus parodos autorė.
Tai pirmoji menininkės iš Australijos personalinė paroda Lietuvoje nuo 2002 metų. Melburne gimusi lietuviškų šaknų turinti Jazmina vis dar stipriai tapatinasi su protėvių palikimu, į savo kūrybą įtraukdama baltiškus motyvus ir temas. Jau daugiau nei du dešimtmečius menininkė kuria grafikos darbų serijas, pasakojančias vilkolakių moterų istorijas, o neseniai pradėjo daryti menines knygas iš aplinkoje rastų medžiagų: iš panaudotų verslo vokų, nereikalingų enciklopedijų iliustracijų ir pakuočių, kurias transformuoja į vaizdingus pasakojimus. Didžioji medžiagos knygoms dalis buvo surinkta 2017 m. Estijos spaudos ir popieriaus muziejuje Tartu, ją papildė Melburno Lietuvos bibliotekos nebenaudojamos knygos ir nuolatinis sąskaitų srautas iš menininkės pašto dėžutės.
Jazmina Cininas kūriniai plačiai eksponuojami tiek nacionaliniu, tiek tarptautiniu mastu. Už darbus su popieriumi ji buvo nominuota daugybei premijų. J. Cininas meno kūrinių yra įsigijusi Australijos nacionalinė galerija, Lietuvos dailės muziejus ir MARKK etnografinis muziejus Hamburge, Vokietijoje. Personalinės menininkės parodos buvo eksponuojamos Australijos galerijose – Melburne („Rodanti uodegą“), Benalla dailės galerijoje Viktorijoje („Įženk į guolį“); RMIT galerijoje 2017 m. festivalyje „Baltoji naktis“ Melburne („Kokius didelius dantis Tu turi“); Salamankos menų centre Tasmanijoje (paroda „Kruvinasis mėnulis“), kaip tarptautinio siaubo filmų festivalio „Nepažįstamasis su mano veidu“ dalis; Estijos spaudos ir popieriaus muziejuje Tartu („Švelnus vilkas ir gudri vilkmergė“).
Jos darbai tapo 2018 m. Pasaulio lietuvių meno parodos „Pasaulio Lietuva: kūrybos horizontai” dalimi (Vilniaus rotušė). Jazmina skaito paskaitas apie grafikos ir knygų meną RMIT meno mokykloje Melburne (Australija). Ji taip pat yra Melburno ir Lietuvos folkloro grupės „Pamesta klumpė“ narė.

Eglė and the She-Wolves is the first solo exhibition in Lithuania by Australian artist Jazmina Cininas since 2002. The Melbourne-born daughter of Lithuanian refugees, Jazmina still identifies strongly with her ancestral heritage, incorporating many Baltic motifs and themes into her work. For over two decades, Jazmina has been creating linocut portraits of female werewolves from throughout history and has more recently begun creating artists’ books from found materials such as used business envelopes, redundant encyclopaedia illustrations and packaging, recycled into narratives of transformation, migration and re-imagination.
Eglė and the She-Wolves presents a survey of Jazmina’s technically demanding female werewolf portraits alongside her more recent books. Source material for the books was largely gathered during a 2017 residency at the Estonian Printing and Paper Museum in Tartu, supplemented by decommissioned books from the Melbourne-Lithuanian library, and the steady stream of bills from the artist’s letterbox.
Jazmina Cininas has been shortlisted for numerous works on paper prizes and has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally. Her artwork has been acquired by many significant public collections including the Australian National Gallery, the Vilnius Art Museum and MARKK ethnographic museum in Hamburg, Germany. Recent solo exhibitions include: Tell Tail at Australian Galleries, Melbourne; Enter the Lair at Benalla Art Gallery, Victoria, Australia; Hell Hunt and the Slippery She-Wolf at the Estonian Printing and Paper Museum; What Big Teeth You Have at RMIT Gallery for the 2017 Melbourne White Night Festival; and Blood Moon at the Salamanca Arts Centre, Tasmania as part of the Stranger With My Face International Horror Film Festival. Her work was included in Pasaulio Lietuva: kūrybos horizontai at Vilnius Town Hall in 2018. Jazmina lectures in printmaking and book arts at RMIT School of Art, Melbourne, Australia. She is also a member of the Melbourne-Lithuanian folkloric group Pamesta Klumpė.

On November 11, 2011, at Vilnius Academy of Art (Gothic hall) Luca Cerizza (IT) presented a lecture The art of storytelling, the story(telling) of art.
Luca Cerizza is a curator and writer, currently based in Berlin. Among his latest curatorial projects: Alighiero e Boetti Day, a 12-hours event dedicated to the seminal Italian artist (co-curated with Massimiliano Gioni and Francesco Manacorda; Turin, May 28th, 2011) and a solo show by Marcello Maloberti (co-curated with Pierre Bal-Blanc, CAC Bretigny and Nuit Blanche, Paris; July-October 2011).

The International Contemporary Art Fair ArtVilnius - Tarptautinė šiuolaikinio meno mugė ArtVilnius
ArtVilnius is the only contemporary art fair in Lithuania and the largest art fair in the Eastern Europe region. ArtVilnius, which had its start in 2009, was one of the most important events in the Vilnius – European Capital of Culture project. Over the last eight years, the art fair has expanded and become firmly established on the local and international art scene, as well as on the list of must-visit events for art lovers.
This is also confirmed by the statistics. Every year ArtVilnius has over 23,000 visitors, with about 65 art galleries from a dozen or so countries participating (Germany, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus, the Netherlands, Russia, Italy, and France). The applications of galleries wishing to participate in the art fair are reviewed and selected by a jury made up of art critics and art market experts, thereby ensuring the professionalism of the galleries at the fair. During a decade of existing, in ArtVilnius participated such famous galleries as Suzzane-Tarasieve, Eric Mouchet (France), Ulf Larsson (Germany), Maksla XO (Latvia), Czułość, local_30, (Poland).
As the only art fair of its type in the region, it aims to be universally democratic. For this reason, the main objectives of ArtVilnius are not limited to stimulating the art market in the Eastern and Northern Europe region, as well as the presentation of a representative panorama of contemporary art galleries. The fair’s organisers have integrated Vilnius into the system of the most significant centres of contemporary art in Europe and have helped it become a bridge between East and West. The ArtVilnius team has established and continues to develop international contacts with contemporary art museums, institutions, curators, collectors, and journalists.
ArtVilnius takes place every year in one of the best exhibition spaces in Lithuania – the Exhibition and Congress Centre LITEXPO, a particularly suitable venue for art events. 12,000 sq. metre LITEXPO exposition space gives gallerists and visitors the complete event package. The architecture for the fair has been overseen for the last several years by a team of architects.
Alongside the supplementary contemporary art galleries programme, a separate project zone is also organised in which various art institutions and individual artists present special exhibitions. ArtVilnius is particularly proud of having in past years presented some of the best-known Polish art institutions (the Museum of Contemporary Art in Kraków MOCAK, the Łaźnia Centre for Contemporary Art in Gdańsk) and a programme of contemporary video art by one of the oldest video art festivals in Europe VIDEONALE (Germany). A regular Fair’s participant is the Estonian contemporary art platform NOAR that presents Nordic and Baltic Young Artist Award.
From 2014 the Lewben Art Foundation of the fair’s exclusive partner the Lewben Group has been presenting the collections of world-famous artists in the project zone curated by Francesca Ferrarini (Italy). On the list of these artists, one can find the names of Hans Op de Beeck, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Bertrand Lavier, amongst others. ArtVilnius is also proud to partner with Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre, Contemporary Art Center (Vilnius) and Jonas Mekas Visual Art Center.
The fair is also exceptional in its annual large-scale sculptures and installations show Takas (The Path), in which artists from Lithuanian, Latvia, Ukraine, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Germany, Denmark and elsewhere have presented their work.
ArtVilnius aims to expand the circle of those interested in contemporary art in various sections of society, with a focus on young people in particular. That is why education plays a prominent part in the fair. Every year, visitors can avail themselves of a host of creative workshops and talks, as well as meetings with artists.
Selecting the best galleries, the best artist and the best artworks has become a traditional part of the ArtVilnius programme. A committee of art critics chooses the winners of the following 5 categories: Best Artist, Best Gallery (7 best galleries are selected), Best Foreign Gallery, Best Installation, and Best Young Artist. Additionally, visitors to the fair can vote for the artist and gallery they like the best. Already for several years, the law firm Cobalt, the fair’s Maecenas, has been awarding a money prize to the best young artist exhibiting at the fair.
ArtVilnius is organised by the Lithuanian Art Gallerists’ Association, of which organisation Diana Stomienė, as well as being the director of ArtVilnius, is also the president.

CATHEDRAL BASILICA
The Cathedral of St. Stanislav and St. Vladislav is the most important place of worship for Lithuania’s Catholics, and the venue for the country’s main Christian and national festivities.
In 1922, the Cathedral was granted the title of ‘Basilica’, by Pope Pius XI.
Many key figures in Lithuanian history are buried in the Sovereigns’ Mausoleum, which is located beneath the chapel of St. Casimir. Its vaults contain the remains of Vytautas The Great, the Grand Duke of Lithuania, and King Alexander of Poland. The vaults are not only restricted to kings, either – the two wives of Žygimantas Augustas, Queen Elisabeth of Austria and Queen Barbora Radvilaitė. The cathedral containing the ashes of King Vladislovas Vaza (Wladyslaw Vasa) are also buried here.
GEDIMINAS’ TOWER
The Vilnius Castle Museum was opened in 1960, and in 1968 it became a subdivision of the Lithuanian National Museum. The exposition of the Vilnius Castle Museum displays reconstruction models of Vilnius castles of the second part of the 14th and the beginning of the 17th centuries, armament, iconographic material of old Vilnius

On 23 March the exhibition “On the Road, at Home and in Dreams: Landscapes from the Collection of the Lewben Art Foundation“ was opened at M. Žilinskas Art Gallery of M. K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum (Nepriklausomybės sq. 12, Kaunas).
