FESTAC'77 - the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture
Festac '77, also known as the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (the first was in Dakar, 1966), was a cultural jamboree held in Lagos, Nigeria, from 15 January 1977 to 12 February 1977. The month-long event celebrated African culture and showcased to the world African music, fine art, literature, drama, dance and religion. About 16,000 participants, representing 56 African nation and countries of the African Diaspora, performed at the event.Artists who performed at the festival included Stevie Wonder, Gilberto Gil from Brazil, Bembeya Jazz National from Guinea, Mighty Sparrow, Les Ballets Africains, and Franco Luambo Makiadi. At the time it was held, it was the largest pan-African gathering.
The emblem of the Festival was the royal ivory mask of Benin. The hosting of the festival led to the establishment of the Nigerian National Council of Arts and Culture, Festac Village and the National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos.Most of the events where held in four main venues: the National Theatre, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos City Hall and Tafawa Balewa Square.

Burial activities for the late comedian, Pa Moses Olaiya Adejumo a.k. a Baba Sala, commenced with a symposium at the National Art Theatre Iganmu in Lagos Wednesday, 28th of this month, tagged ‘Genius Without Borders’…He was aged 82 when he died on October 7, 2018. The symposium organised by Fullsteam communications, was hosted by King Sunny Ade, and featured the unveiling of a publication dedicated to life and times of the comedian, as well as a documentary about his life and times within and outside the industry….Barrister Tunji Bamishigbin, renowned Theatre Arts practitioner and Professor Bakare Ojo-Rasaki.from Federal University of Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti delivered papers on “The Role of stage Play in a Nascent Democracy” as speakers.
