North Dakota: Jamestown, Largest Buffalo
Jamestown is home to The World’s Largest Buffalo, named Dakota Thunder, a 60-ton cement sculpture that stands 26 feet tall and stretches 46 feet long. It was built in 1959.
A number of old buildings were moved in around it to create the Frontier Village, which today attracts over 100,000 people annually.
A white buffalo, Dakota Miracle, appears to the right side of the screen toward the end of this video. Dakota Miracle's mother, White Cloud, which used to live with the herd, was sent back to Michigan, North Dakota, where she was born.
White buffalo are sacred to the Lakota people.

National Buffalo Museum Gets Collection Gift #110
JAMESTOWN, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) -- A museum only hopes that it can receive a collection that would make such a significant impact as the Ernest Clifford Collection of buffalo memorabilia has to the National Buffalo Museum. Wednesday evening's 16th Annual Fundraiser For the North Dakota Buffalo Foundation in Jamestown, was dedicated to Ernie Clifford and the 350 plus piece collection that he donated to the National Buffalo Museum in early March 2009.
National Buffalo Museum Director, Felicia Sargeant says, the process began over a year ago for moving the collection from CT and obtaining an official appraisal of the collection. Although the road was a tough one, the museum was able to obtain funding from the Buffalo City Tourism Foundation for the move as well as pay for the appraisal. She says, purchasing collections is not standard practice for museums as there is never enough money for day-to-day operations. She adds, the National Buffalo Museum is no exception, and would not have had the ability to even consider accepting the collection if hadn't been for the generous support of the Buffalo City Tourism Foundation.
Ms. Sargeant adds, it is with great pride that the National Buffalo Museum now houses the entire collection of Ernest Clifford. The museum will continue to change and display the many wonderful bronzes, artwork and memorabilia that Ernie collected for over 30 years. Ernie and his family have made the trip to North Dakota in order to see the collection displayed.
The National Buffalo Museum is currently open daily from 8 a.m. 8 p.m. Admission is $5.00 for adults, $4.00 for AAA/Seniors, $10 for families, $1.00 for students (age 17 7), age 6 and under and museum members are free. The National Buffalo Museum is located off I-94 at exit 258 in Jamestown. For more information about these events, contact the National Buffalo Museum at 701-252-8648 or 1-800-807-1511.

2 Minute VideoNews - White Buffalo Named
Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) -- The National Buffalo Museum in Jamestown,
hosted a news conference on Wednesday, October 15th, to announce the name of the
white male calf born May 31, 2008. Felicia Sargeant, Director of the National Buffalo
Museum, made the announcement. The winning name is Dakota Legend, with the winning entry submitted by, Jaci Trefz
of Jamestown. Her entry form said the name was chosen in keeping with the Dakota in
the lineage of Dakota Thunder, and Dakota Miracle, and Legend, comes from the North
Dakota state slogan, Legendary.
For submitting the winning entry, Jaci receives a one-year family membership to the
National Buffalo Museum and a $100 gift certificate to the Museum's gift shop.
Ms. Sargeant points out, the name was chosen, by a five-person committee from 460, with 370 unique names, with
entries, from 15 states and Canada. Members of the name selection committee were: Nina
Sneider, Buffalo City Tourism Foundation; Dwaine Heinrich, Jamestown Elks Lodge
#995; Mayor Clarice Liechty; Tex Weatherly, North Dakota Buffalo Foundation; and
JoDee Rasmusson, Executive Director of the Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce.
The committee had their work cut out for them but managed to choose 4 finalists. Those
names were given to the board of directors at the National Buffalo Museum, which made
the final decision before the news conference.
Following the birth of the white calf many visitors asked what the calf would be named, so
museum officials began putting together a naming contest. The naming contest officially
began on August 8, 2008 and ended September 30, 2008. The herd also has an adult
albino bison, White Cloud, with one white offspring, Dakota Miracle.
Another offspring of White Cloud, named Dakota Thunder, carries the albino gene and is
the father of the new calf. Dakota Legend is owned by the National Buffalo Museum.
Dakota Legend and Dakota Miracle will be DNA tested by Texas A&M University to
verify that each is albino, with samples taken from tail hairs following the fall roundup of
the Museums herd. Both bison have white fur, and pink eyes, indicating they likely are albino.
The National Buffalo Museum is a non-profit educational organization devoted to the
cultural and natural history of bison and the prairie. The museum is open year round.
Current hours are Monday Friday 9 am 5 pm, Saturday 10 am 5 pm, and Sunday 12
5 p.m.. The Museum and the herd are located in the Frontier Village at the site of the
Worlds Largest Buffalo in Jamestown just north of interstate 94 at exit #258. For more
information contact Felicia Sargeant at the National Buffalo Museum, 701-252-8648.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park (Day 2 of Northwest National Parks Trip)
After a pretty boring Day 1, this was a pretty eventful day, and more typical of our road trip experiences. We started the day early at 6am and took showers before leaving Roy Lake State Park, South Dakota. Our destination for the day was Cottonwood Campground inside Theodore Roosevelt National Park. We departed Roy Lake a little after 8 am and made our first stop in Jamestown, North Dakota. It was the first time any of us had visited the state. We visited the buffalo museum there and had a picnic lunch in the frontier town next to the museum.
Other than gas we didn't stop again until we reached Theodore Roosevelt national park. We first stopped at the visitor center near the interstate, and then proceeded to campground and got set up. It was very windy so we didn't put up our rainfly because we were worried something might break or tear the tent and we didn't want that to happen this early in the trip. Once we were set up, we ate, and then drove a loop through the park where we had an amazing encounter with a heard of buffalo. Unfortunately, a storm came through while we were out and got our stuff pretty wet. All in all, a great day, though.
