TOP Tainan Open Plaza- Emergence of Urban Connection: 2011 NCKU international workshop
In the heart of the city of Tainan, the current railway will be buried beneath the ground for 8.23 km. This will provide 13.2 ha of new land in its very center. It is an outstanding redevelopment opportunity to connect the so far separated parts of western and eastern Tainan.
The following design addresses this by providing a clear center to the city. It establishes a so far unseen vivid connection of space between the Central Business District in the west of the site and its east side, which is home to National Cheng Kung University. This integrated approach bears in mind the high costs and risks of the new development while empowering the site's crucial importance to the city center development. Accomplishing this, the provided solution understands the high land value of the site as great opportunity.

National Cheng Kung Museum : NAPAK TILAS SEJARAH NCKU (Part #1)
The National Cheng Kung University Museum (Chinese: 國立成功大學博物館; pinyin: Guólì Chénggōng Dàxué Bówùguǎn) or (Chinese: 成大博物館; pinyin: Chéngdà Bówùguǎn) is a museum in East District, Tainan, Taiwan. The museum is located at National Cheng Kung University.
The idea for a museum came in 1999, when Po-Yih Hsu pledged to donate his collection of historical artifacts to the University. President Cheng-I Weng and Vice President Hung-Shan Weng saw the opportunity for building a museum that would also exhibit the collection in the university's possession. The campus had mechanical artifacts like ancient locks, mineral samples, animal and botanical samples, historical artifacts, and works of art like calligraphy and paintings. In July 1999, a team was formed to oversee the establishment of the museum. On February 1, 2000 the team began work of collecting and recording the artifacts to be put on display.
The first major contribution to the museum was made by Mr Po-Yih Hsu in autumn of 2000. He donated 2,412 pieces of artifacts. The collection contained 1,823 pottery and ceramics, 202 stone sculptures, 112 wood sculptures, 102 puppets, 115 religious paintings, 21 bamboo woven handicraft articles, and a few objects of iron, plastic and tin. A few years later, in 2003, the building on Cheng Kung Campus, which had been occupied by the Japanese from 1895-1945, was turned into the museum's office and exhibition room. A research team composed of various scholars and experts then selected 516 items from Mr. Po-Yih Hsu’s large collection. The museum was officially opened in November 2006, the year the university entered its 76th year.

Tainan, Taiwan - 臺南市 – Part 7
Tainan City, Taiwan
Source: Wikipedia
Tainan, officially Tainan City is a special municipality of Taiwan, facing the Taiwan Strait in the west and south. Tainan is the oldest city on the island of Taiwan and also commonly known as the Capital City for its over 200 years of history as the capital of Taiwan under Koxinga and later Qing dynasty rule. Tainan's complex history of comebacks, redefinitions and renewals inspired its popular nickname the Phoenix City.
Tainan was initially established by the Dutch East India Company as a ruling and trading base called Fort Zeelandia during the period of Dutch rule on Taiwan. After Dutch colonists were defeated by Koxinga in 1661, Tainan remained as the capital of the Tungning Kingdom until 1683 and afterwards the capital of Taiwan Prefecture under Qing Dynasty rule until 1887, when the new provincial capital was moved to Taipei. Tainan has been historically regarded as one of the oldest cities in Taiwan, and its former name, Tayouan, has been claimed to be the origin of the name Taiwan. It is also one of Taiwan's cultural capitals, for its rich folk cultures including the famous local snack food, extensively preserved Taoist rites and other living local traditions covering everything from child birth to funerals. The city houses the first Confucian school–temple, built in 1665, the remains of the Eastern and Southern gates of the old city, and countless other historical monuments. Tainan claims more Buddhist and Taoist temples than any other city in Taiwan.
Qigu Salt Mountain
Source: TravelKing
Located in Qigu District, Tainan, Qigu Salt Mountain is one of the most popular attractions in Tainan. Qigu Salt Mountain is set close to Qigu Lagoon, the largest inland lake in Taiwan, which is rich in ecological resources and the habitat for winter migratory birds-black-faced spoonbills. The area's long history of generating salt and its great contribution of nation’s salt production make it a renowned place for rich mineral substance.
There are 2 salt mountains in Qigu Salt Mountain area, the major mound and north mound. The major mound is comprised of 60,000 tons of salt left over from the Taiwan Salt Corporation’s Qigu Salt Fields, which is about 20 meters-tall. Visitors are offered with great views of other salt fields and surroundings when viewing from the top of the mound.
Other than going up to the top of the salt mountains, visitors may also enjoy salty ice-scream at the onsite salt mart, which is only available in Qigu. In addition, there are a number of recreational features include bumper boats, go-kart, and Doo-doo trains making it an interesting Tainan tourist spot for visitors of all ages.
Located right next to Qigu Salt Mountain, the Taiwan Salt Museum is where visitors will be given some ideas of the history of Taiwan salt industry, the science of salt and the use of salt world-wide. Black-Faced Spoonbill Conservation Area, Ocean View Pavilion, and Qigu Lagoon are other attractions nearby that are worth-seeing for one’s Tainan trip.

鯨生情未了-台灣鯨豚擱淺救援實錄影片 Our hearts will go on— Cetacean conservation and stranding responses in Taiwan
Prof. Alvin Su sets up coding camp at rural school to open up opportunities for growth
Alvin Su is a professor of computer science at National Cheng Kung University in Tainan. As a child, he was a slow learner, but he rediscovered self-confidence~ thanks to the support of a willing teacher. Now, by organizing a computer programming camp, he''s paying forward that generosity to rural students, hoping to support them on a new path to personal growth.Taimali, Taitung is one of Taiwan’s many small towns suffering from an exodus of young people. But on this cold day, shouts of excitement ring through the town’s streets. It’s a fun and rowdy scene as these children try to move remote-control cars into position to pop balloons with a pin on a robotic arm. The activity is part of a camp put on by engineers from some of Taiwan’s top tech firms, who lead groups of students through a series of exercises that sometimes stretch late into the night.More than 40 people are crammed into this small hotel room, where they’re discussing how to use games to teach students how to code. Alvin Su, wearing black-rimmed glasses, is a professor of computer science and information engineering at National Cheng Kung University in Tainan. He’s brought these other engineers to Taimali to pass on their collective programming expertise to a new generation.Prof. Alvin SuNCKU Computer Sci. and Information EngineeringWe’re in an age that’s completely changing rural areas. Our work lets us come to these areas. A programmer doesn’t need to go to Taipei, or Hsinchu, or Silicon Valley. They can touch the whole world from right here. But convincing these excitable elementary school students to sit in front of a computer and write code isn’t an easy job. So the members of the team designed a game to teach kids the basics of coding. Chou Chen-yingProgramming Camp StudentLearning coding is like putting together a puzzle, because you’re just putting blocks of code together one by one.Chiu Yun-jingProgramming Camp StudentFinishing it gives you a sense of accomplishment, and you learn something too.Chuang Chi-hungProgramming Camp LeaderA lot of students might not have the opportunity at school to find affirmation. But when they opened their computers at noon after having lunch, all they did was write programs on the computer. Using the game to introduce the children to programming logic, the camp leaders also give them a chance to work with one another. Alvin Su says the teaching method has a lot to do with his own experiences.Prof. Alvin SuNCKU Computer Sci. and Information EngineeringBecause I was born prematurely, my health wasn’t good, and it took me a long time to learn how to walk and talk. As a young student, Su had trouble keeping up with his homework. He was lucky, though, to meet a third-grade teacher who took him in and helped him gain self-belief.Now a teacher himself, Su doesn’t hesitate to lend help to a student in need, going right over to walk them through a problem.Prof. Alvin SuNCKU Computer Sci. and Information EngineeringI had a teacher who helped me through the challenges of my youth, and who made me into this person. I’m grateful to him, and I hope that my own child will be able to thank me in 30 years for having done that. We just need a few people like this to contribute to society. The kids attending the camp are from a place in Taitung called the Kid’s Bookhouse. About 80 or 90 percent of the children there either have working parents, are raised by their grandparents, or have only one parent with a low income. After school, teachers at the Bookhouse help them do their homework and give them dinner. After training the teachers, Alvin Su walks the students through how to write code, introducing them to a new opportunity for personal growth.Liu Kuo-hsuanKid’s Bookhouse TeacherFor those in the countryside, distance is a significant barrier to getting to the city, and if you can stay at home and use programming to solve problems, I think that’s a feasible option. So I want to learn coding in order to help them give it a shot.Chen Chiu-rungKid’s Bookhouse TeacherWill some of the kids here become programmers? I don’t know, but if I don’t give them a chance, and they don’t try, how will they know if it’s a direction they may want to go in?At the camp’s graduation ceremony, the camp leaders announce each team’s score and hand out prizes. The student team members did their best to build on one another’s unique skills, and the team leaders receive a warm thank-you. Watching how the kids hesitate at first, but become enthusiastic coders in the end, Alvin Su has learned that the definition of “rural” doesn’t have to hinge on geography. A willingness to invest one’s resources can give those in the countryside a new lease on life, a mission which his team is carrying out, one town at a time.
