National Coach Museum - Lisbon, Portugal
The museum displays a collection of 77 coaches, showing the evolution of animal-drawn transportation for the past two hundred years. The building itself is the former Royal Riding Arena. The whole body of any coach back in the 17th century was made of wood, including the structure, bodies and wheels.

National Coach Museum in Lisbon
This museum has one of the finest collection of coaches in the world. The coaches were built in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and Austria spanning over three centuries. The coaches were used by monarches, noblemen and popes ranging from plain to preposterous and were very interesting. Some of the coaches had red velvet interiors and had life-sized gilded statues. One of them even had a potty under the cushion. The main gallery has a splendidly painted ceiling.
Royal Coaches Museum
One of Lisbon's most visited sights, the Coaches Museum (Museu Nacional dos Coches) has the largest and most valuable collection of its type in the world. It opened in 1905 in a richly-decorated 18th-century royal riding school that was part of Belem Palace, illustrating the ostentation and staggering wealth of the old Portuguese elite. On its 110th anniversary it moved across the street to a new building designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha. The new premises made it possible to also show accessories and carriages that weren’t previously shown.
Each carriage is more magnificent than the other, showing how artisans went to extraordinary lengths to make their vehicles stand out. One of the most outstanding has gilded figures on the tailgate showing Lisbon crowned by Fame and Abundance. Another one, used in an embassy to France's Louis XIV, depicts cherubs with bat's wings. Yet another splendid example was built in 1716 for Portugal's ambassador to Pope Clement XI, decorated with allegorical scenes representing Portuguese military and maritime triumphs.
More wonderful examples belonged to several European royal families, from Spain to England, including a 19th-century coach built in London last used by Queen Elizabeth II on a state visit.

Lisbon Belem Tower and Monument to the Discoveries
Along the Lisbon waterfront are the two most famous monuments in Belem which stand as symbols of Portugal’s 16th century naval voyages: The Tower of Belem and the Monument to the Discoveries.
To understand the history of Portugal, we need to consider their spectacular maritime discoveries 500 years ago. Vasco da Gama was the first to sail around Africa and discover the ocean route to Asia, opening up a vast trade network that made Portugal rich. Pedro Cabral discovered Brazil in 1500, which Portugal claimed as their largest colony, and Portuguese navigators were the first to sail to China, in 1542. After the initial Portuguese discoveries other European countries joined in the hunt for colonies and the world would never be the same again. This was the beginning of the modern world and the start of global trade and communications.
The Tower of Belem, built between 1515 and 1520, is a fortress that guards the harbor and celebrates the discoveries in grand style, with its elaborate Manueline carved decorations similar to those at Jeronimos. It was built as a fortress to protect the entrance of Lisbon’s harbor and had originally been in the river as an island surrounded by water, but over time the river got narrower so the fortress is now on the shore. Another fortress used to be on the opposite side of the river to catch the enemy in a cross-fire. You can climb to upper levels for a panoramic view.
