National Coal Mining Museum for England Overton Wakefield
This is a video of my Tuesdays Long Walking Group visit to the National Coal Mining Museum in Overton Wakefield.
I like this museum because it was so exciting for me to go there.
I like staying overground here.
I would like to go again and stay overground here at the National Coal Mining Museum or the National Mining Museum I will call it.

A Man Has His Pride
Singer/songwriter Ali Bullivent was commissioned by the National Coal Mining Museum for England to write a new musical piece in order to highlight their archives. This formed part of the Wakefield Literature Festival 2016.
The resulting lyrical song cycle is inspired by a short story by Sid Chaplin, 'The Thin Seam' (1950), which follows the life of a miner from Durham who chooses to return to working in the pit rather than continue his scholarship education and risk becoming alienated from his community.
'The Thin Seam' was performed at the Unitarian Chapel in Wakefield where Ali was joined by fellow musicians Jonathan Dore, Jane Muller and Paula Ryan.
The recording was produced by Jamie Vizard and the videos by Fly Girl Films.
The 4th song in the series of 4 is 'A Man Has His Pride'.

ECS Helps Keep the National Coal Mining Museum Above Water
The National Coal Mining Museum for England has been offering visitors the chance to learn more about this ancient industry for over 25 years. As with most coal mines, there is a constant build up of water in the underground workings that makes its way to the old mineshafts. This water needs to be pumped out and treated before it is discharged into the local watercourse. ECS Engineering Services has been responsible for maintaining the pumps and the treatment works for the past 18 years and ensuring that the water levels remain under control.
The museum is based at the site of Caphouse Colliery in Overton, West Yorkshire and originally opened in 1988 as the Yorkshire Mining Museum after the colliery was closed in 1985. In 1995, it gained national status and at this point ECS was appointed to maintain the water pumping equipment and the treatment works, which it has been doing ever since. The contract has seen a permanent presence of ECS engineers, who are responsible for preventing the museum from filling up with ground water and ensuring that the treated water meets the standards set by the Environment Agency (EA).

'End of an era' for coal mining in England
They are calling it 'end of an era'. Coal mining in England is no more as the last deep mining colliery in North England is set to close. Coal powered the Industrial Revolution but the shafts have been going silent one after another as technology and global fuel prices put the mining business at a disadvantage. I spoke to the manager and deputy director of the National Coal Mining Museum of England based in Wakefield. See what he had to say.

Gas in Coalmines at Sniby.wmv
This clip shows a potted history of how gases were detected in British coalmines throughout history. The clip is from part of the colliery tour at the Snibston Discovery Centre at Coalville in Leicestershire. The Discovery Park is situated on the site of the former Snibston Colliery which closed as a production unit in 1983. It remained open as a Preparation Plant for Whitwick coal until 1986.
