Here we are in Kilkenny for the arts festival. Its a ten day festival in August promoting all things creative. You can see behind me a fantastic band playing on the last day of the festival.
Hello. She came here for holidays, for a week for arts festival in Kilkenny.
Yeah, we have our time at night. Its the best time.
It must be a dying art, is it, silver making.
No, no, there's a fair amount of people doing it. Even for any of the ones that need casting or anything like that, you still need someone who can make them. Its not dying.
Good. Good to hear it.
Okay, so we're standing outside Kilkenny Castle. And its such a beautiful landmark. It actually dates from the thirteenth century and it was owned by the Butler family for six hundred years.
So in general, this whole project is all these chairs were designed and made by people with mental health difficulties.

Causeway is an interactive interface. By touching each corner separately or in combination, the platform is brought to life, initiating beautiful sounds and animations that travel along its faceted surface, encouraging interaction, play and discovery. It was created especially for Irish Design 2015 and represents Ireland, a design island connecting to the rest of the world. Causeway was designed by Cormac O'Conaire with electronics developed in collaboration with Ian Mellor of IMME Design Ltd. (text from exhibition)

Throwing shapes in Kilkenny: what’s new in ceramics
Flux and reflux, wrote the novelist Thomas Hardy in Tess of the d’Urbervilles, “alternate and persist in everything under the sky”. He might have been penning a programme note for In Flux, the exhibition at the National Design & Craft Gallery in Kilkenny, in which the 12 graduates from the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland’s Centre of Excellence in Ceramics at Thomastown are presenting their project work. The show explores the idea of flux through the continuous evolution of shapes and des...

Irish Blessing Craft Idea
This is a fun craft idea for kids! You are basically making a little book and allowing them to be creative. This is great for any age, because with older kids who can write, they can be the author and the illustrator or you could have two kids working together (one as the author, one as the illustrator). You can determine what guidelines and rules go with this project or you can give them free reign. For younger kids, you can do what I did. Find a well known story or poem (while being respectful of copywrite laws) and allow the child to make some kind of illustration for each verse or page. You can experiment with all sorts of illustration. The poem I used was an Irish Blessing. It goes like this:
May there always be work for your hands to do.
May your purse always hold a coin or two.
May the sun always shine on your windowpane.
May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain.
May the hand of a friend always be near you, and
May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.
This was so enjoyable to make. I did this with the children I babysit, but you could also use this for a literary, art, or writing project, a Sunday school class, a summer camp activity, etc. There are so many different directions you could go with this activity!
I will post a layout you can use as a reference on my blog at
