Coded String
A performance with Anton Terziev, Katya Damyanova and Miroslav Dimitrov
National Art Gallery, Sofia, Bulgaria, 01.03. 2006
'Martenitsi' /traditional Bulgarian thread dolls wishing health and well-being/ were made from two balls of white yarn, one of which, during the campaign was stained with our blood, and addressed to the main state institutions, NGOs and the individuals professionally and emotionally involved in the development, status and image of the modern Bulgarian culture.
The act of giving a 'martenitsa' to someone symbolizes the wish for revitalization, renewal and fertility. The DNA-coded information in the artefacts of the performance (the 'martenitsas') implements the meaning of criticism in the act of their sending to our chosen addressees. This artistic gesture aims to provoke thinking over the policy, the status and the attitude to Bulgarian culture, history and self-confidence.
