Statens Museum For Kunst, or the National Gallery of Denmark, was a very enjoyable stop during our visit of Copenhagen. It is a large, modern museum with a terrific variety of art from Denmark and various European countries. Some collections require a fee but the main/permanent collections were free to visit. Remember to check in your bag below the first floor before staring your tour!

Copenhagen Part 5 - National Museum of Denmark | Frederiksborg Palace | Baroque Gardens
Rain rain go away! But it's ok, we made the best of our last 2 days in Copenhagen. While our trip to the National Museum of Denmark was cut short, we still had an awesome day exploring Frederiksborg Palace (Castle?) and the absolutely gorgeous Baroque Gardens in the rear. Definitely one of most beautiful places I've ever visited!

DENMARK'S NATIONAL GALLERY and painting by EDVARD MUNCH, my favourite painter! ????????️
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit The National Gallery of Denmark which is the Danish national gallery, located in the centre of Copenhagen. The museum collects, registers, maintains, researches and handles Danish and foreign art dating from the 14th century to the present day.
We are going to view a painting from one of my favourite paintes. We are going to see
Death Struggle' by Edvard Munch. Edvard Munch (1863-1944) was a Norwegian Symbolist painter and perpetually troubled artist preoccupied with matters of human mortality such as chronic illness, sexual liberation, and religious aspiration. He expressed these obsessions through works of intense color, semi-abstraction, and mysterious subject matter.
This artwork, which Munch retained in his personal collection throughout his life, revisits his sister Sophie' final moments. It shows relatives crowded around the dying girl. They are rendered in a vivid palette of blurring and contrasting colors. Delineated in thin runs of oil paint nearly thirty years after the event occurred, their faces are portrayed as if in a distant vision distorted through time.
Denmark is a Scandinavian country comprising the Jutland Peninsula and numerous islands. It's linked to nearby Sweden via the Öresund bridge. Copenhagen, its capital, is home to royal palaces and colorful Nyhavn harbor, plus the Tivoli amusement park and the iconic “Little Mermaid” statue. Odense is writer Hans Christian Andersen’s hometown, with a medieval core of cobbled streets and half-timbered houses.

Denmark Beyond Copenhagen
Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | Using Copenhagen as a springboard, we'll visit the very best of Denmark. Aarhus welcomes us with its ruddy affluence, charming open-air museum, and eerily well-preserved ancient bog man. Roskilde impresses visitors with its royal burial church and the best Viking-ship museum anywhere. And the delightfully quaint isle of Ærø comes with half-timbered cottages, ships in bottles, and cobbled alleyways that remind us of the world of Hans Christian Andersen.

Painting Tranquility: Masterworks by Vilhelm Hammershøi by SMK - The National Gallery of Denmark
Painting Tranquility: Masterworks by Vilhelm Hammershøi from SMK – The National Gallery of Denmark presents a wide selection of masterpieces by celebrated Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916). Drawn from the extensive collection of SMK – The National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen, the exhibition features a selection of paintings from across Hammershøi’s body of work, including several of the quiet home interiors for which he earned the title “de stillestuers maler” (the painter of tranquil rooms). Painting Tranquility will be the first exhibition in New York exclusively dedicated to Hammershøi’s work in over 15 years. Hammershøi’s exquisite artworks have long captivated scholars and critics and his international popularity has grown rapidly in recent years. Curated by Kasper Monrad, Painting Tranquility features paintings representative of Hammershøi’s four main genres—reduced landscapes, unpopulated urban cityscapes, portraits, and spare, sunlight-infused interiors—offering an intimate look into his life and enigmatic artwork.
Painting Tranquility: Masterworks by Vilhelm Hammershøi from SMK – The National Gallery of Denmark is curated by Kasper Monrad, Chief Curator, SMK – The National Gallery of Denmark, and organized by SMK. Presentation of the exhibition at Scandinavia House has been made possible by the generous support of The A.P. Møller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation, Ambassador John L. Loeb Jr., Daniel B. Strickler Jr. and Ellen Braestrup Strickler, Danske Markets, and The Vincent Mulford Foundation. Exhibition-related programs have been supported in part by grants from the Scan|Design Foundation and The Consulate General of Denmark in New York. Additional organizational support has been provided by the Oak Foundation, the Ahmanson Charitable Community Trust, Ferring Pharmaceuticals, Møbeltransport Danmark, SAS Cargo, ArcusGruppen, Sotheby’s, Henning Larsen Architects, VisitDenmark, The Consulate General of Denmark in New York, and the AFSMK – American Friends of Statens Museum for Kunst.

ABOUT SMK
Statens Museum for Kunst – The National Gallery of Denmark
Situated in the heart of Copenhagen, SMK – The National Gallery of Denmark is the country’s largest art museum, and displays international artwork from the early Renaissance through to the present. The extensive SMK collections originate from the holdings of the 17th- and 18th-century Danish kings, particularly those of King Frederik V who, in the 1760s, established a large collection of Old Masters which he housed at Christiansborg Castle. Since the opening of the Royal Picture Gallery to the public in 1827, SMK has had an obligation to collect contemporary Danish art, and, thus, several Hammershøi paintings were acquired directly from the artist.
Christiansborg Castle burned in 1884, but nearly all of the paintings were miraculously saved. The surviving collections became the founding collection of SMK. SMK now presents between six to eight special exhibitions a year, always based on new research. For more information: smk.dk
About AFSMK
AFSMK was founded in September 2009 to strengthen the ties between the National Gallery of Denmark (SMK) and the American public. The organization has been established exclusively to support the charitable, educational, and scientific functions of SMK.
The relationship between AFSMK and the National Gallery of Denmark is a traditional “friends of” relationship. AFSMK has determined that the National Gallery of Denmark engages in charitable and educational activities that are germane to the purposes of AFSMK, and that, by supporting SMK projects in both the US and Denmark, AFSMK advances its own purposes.
