Its historic buildings include Dublin Castle, dating to the 13th century, and imposing St Patrick’s Cathedral, founded in 1191. City parks include landscaped St Stephen’s Green and huge Phoenix Park, containing Dublin Zoo. The National Museum of Ireland explores Irish heritage and culture.

The National Gallery of Ireland re-opened its doors last month following almost six years of extensive refurbishment and modernisation.
Established in 1854, the gallery houses over 16,300 works of art and has added 150 new pieces since the gallery closed for refurbishment in 2011.
Irish artworks are being hung on the ground floor, with collections from Daniel Maclise, Roderic O’Connor, and Jack B. Yeats with the art will be displayed chronologically rather than in its previous country-specific layout.

The National Gallery of Ireland houses the Irish national collection of Irish and European art.It is located in the centre of Dublin with one entrance on Merrion Square, beside Leinster House, and another on Clare Street.Due to ongoing renovations, the Clare Street entrance is the only one currently open.It was founded in 1854 and opened its doors ten years later.

Lines of Vision—National Gallery of Ireland
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the National Gallery, 56 contemporary Irish writers have contributed new poems, essays and stories to Lines of Vision: Irish Writers on Art (published by Thames and Hudson; edited by Janet McLean, Curator of European Art, 1850-1950). Each writer has selected a picture from the collection and used it as a setting-off point to explore ideas about art, love, loss, family, dreams, memory, places and privacy. Perceptive and, at times, deeply personal, their words invite us to look at art in new lights and from different angles. This exhibition, on display in Rooms 1-5, features the pictures that inspired them. The exhibition also features a short film, produced by Areaman Productions, in which six of the writers discuss their work.
The film features original music by Gerry Horan.
The National Gallery of Ireland
In June 1852 William Dargan, the father of the Irish rail network, approached the Royal Dublin Society (RDS) with an offer to underwrite a spectacular exhibition on Leinster Lawn in Dublin, the home of the RDS since 1815. He wished to imitate the great exhibition that had taken place at Crystal Palace in London the previous year. Just eleven months later, on the 12th May, the exhibition was opened in an astonishing series of pavilions for which the architect, John Benson, received a knighthood. The enthusiastic response of the visiting crowds demonstrated an active interest for art as well the desire for the establishment of a permanent public collection that would also be a fitting tribute to the generosity of Dargan.
On our last day in Ireland Joyce Williams and I visited this stunning gallery, and what struck me most were the portraits of families that included their black retainers, presumably as indicators of their wealth and standing.
Discover Ireland - The Hugh Lane
The Hugh Lane is the oldest Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art located in Dublin's city centre. The Hugh Lane, originally called The Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, houses one of Ireland's foremost collections of modern and contemporary art. The original collection, donated by the Gallery's founder Sir Hugh Lane in 1908, has now grown to include over 2000 artworks, ranging from the Impressionist masterpieces of Manet, Monet, Renoir and Degas to works by leading national and international contemporary artists. The Gallery presents dynamic schedules of temporary exhibitions, seminars and public lectures, publications and educational projects.
'Art in the Open' field trip to the National Gallery of Ireland
On 7 August 2018, a group of national and international artists who were participating in ‘Art in the Open’, the international plein-air festival in Wexford, travelled to the Gallery via the scenic coastal train from Wexford to Dublin. This journey was a re-imagining of the iconic journey taken by French artists at the turn of the nineteenth century, travelling between Paris and Pont-Aven, and was organised as part of the programme of events for the exhibition 'Roderic O’Conor and the Moderns. Between Paris and Pont-Aven' (18 July-29 October 2018). The 'Art in the Open' field trip culminated in a mass paint-out in Merrion Square park.
