National Gallery of Modern Art in Bengaluru, India History, Reviews, Photos
The National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), located at 49, Palace Road in Bengaluru opened to the public about five years ago. The heritage building has a display space of 1551 square meters, while the new gallery block adds up to 1260 square meters. The collection at NGMA includes paintings, sculptures, graphic prints and examples of early photography in India amongst others.Walking inside, you cannot help wishing that the rest of Bengaluru city had been designed and built in a similar manner, effortlessly blending in modern functionality with the elegance of the past. Spread over three and a half acres, the campus is designed around the majestic Manikyavelu Mansion, once the inheritance of Raja Manikayavelu Mudaliar, a royal from Mysore. A much newer building, the gallery block, has been added; contemporary but designed in line with the style and aesthetics of the heritage mansion. It fits in beautifully. And then of course, giving the place a defining character, are its several many trees. Trees which have seen people, history and time go by. You will meet a bunch of Ashokas and a couple of Sandalwoods. You will notice the rain trees, their canopy-like branches protecting the secrets beneath. You will be drawn to the secluded Banyan – meditating in a quiet corner which it claims as its own.The wind will whisper out as you pass through the Silver Oak, the Fern Leaf and the Wavy Leaved Fig Tree. And you may just even partake in a game of I-Spy while you go about spotting the Tamarind, Mango, Woody Apple, Jackfruit and Indian Blackberry trees. It is no surprise then, that we chose this serene place as a venue for Neralu – the Bengaluru Tree Festival! It will be in the spotlight on 7th and 8th February 2015, as it hosts talks, performances, workshops, art installations, tree appreciation walks et al.

National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi
The National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) is the premier art gallery under Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The main museum at Jaipur House in New Delhi was established on March 29, 1954 by the Government of India, with subsequent branches at Mumbai and Bangalore. Its collection of more than 14,000 works includes works by artists such as Thomas Daniell, Raja Ravi Verma, Abanindranath Tagore, Rabindranath Tagore, Gaganendranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose, Jamini Roy, Amrita Sher-Gil as well as foreign artists, apart from sculptures by various artists. Some of the oldest works preserved here date back to 1857. With 12,000 square meters of exhibition space, the Delhi branch is one of the world's largest modern art museums.
Situated at the end of Rajpath, in the Central Hexagon around the India Gate, the building was a former residential palace of the Maharaja of Jaipur, hence known as Jaipur House. The butterfly-shaped building with a central dome and built in 1936, and designed by Sir Arthur Bloomfield, after the construction of Lutyens' Delhi. The Central Hexagon around the India Gate, where the buildings of leading princely states, was itself designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens.
Though the idea of the National Gallery was floated in 1949, it was formally inaugurated by Vice-president Dr S.Radhakrishnan in 1954, in the presence of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Hermann Goetz (1898–1976), a noted German art historian became its first curator and in time it added new facilities such as Art restoration services, an Art reference Library and a Documentation Centre.
Then in 2009, a new wing of the National Gallery of Modern Art was inaugurated adding almost six times the space to the existing gallery, plus it has a new auditorium, a preview theatre, conservation laboratory, library and academic section as well as a cafeteria and museum shop.

Venkatappa Art Gallery Bangalore
Venkatappa Art Gallery (VAG) is situated in Bangalore, India, in the vicinity of Cubbon Park and next to the Bangalore Museum as well as the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum. It attracts artists and art lovers from all over Karnataka.
The Government of Mysore had decided in 1966 that a gallery/museum was needed that could hold the paintings, musical instruments and plaster of paris bas reliefs which formed the collection of Karnataka’s most famous artist, K. Venkatappa (1886–1965), a pupil of Abanindranath Tagore.
Venkatappa Art Gallery came into being with the foundation stone being laid by the then Chief Minister S.Nijalingappa on 24 November 1967. It took a long time to complete. Artists who were frustrated with the delays went on an innovative protest on the footpath in front of Bible Society demanding the gallery space be finished in 1971. Artists included G.S Shenoy, Bhaskar Rao, Ramesh Rao, Acharya and Punam Chattaya. The building was finally completed in 1975.
It was intended to function both as a museum holding the works of K. Venkatappa as well as becoming a space for artists from all over Karnataka to use for their arts practice. VAG is commonly mistaken for the Bangalore Museum as they both stand next to each other and yet they are very different. VAG continues to be a space that accesses the contemporary holdings within it a museum as well as a gallery, something quite rare in the history of the structure of museums.
The modernist building was built by the Karnataka Public Works Department in the lines of an artificial island with a beautiful moat with a lotus pond surrounding it. This was used recently as the scene for a painting protest undertaken by VAG Forum in memory of K.Venkatappa protesting the hand over of Karnataka’s cultural commons to private parties.
The plan for the museum/gallery was for five floors but only three floors have been built and the whole building has been air-conditioned.
It also houses the collections of KK Hebbar and the sculptor Rajaram. KK Hebbar, an internationally acclaimed painter from Karnataka, donated his collection to Venkatappa Art Gallery in 1993. The Government of Karnataka also bought some of his works.
The KK Hebbar Gallery wing was set up in 1993–94 with the help of Chiranjiv Singh who was the former Indian ambassador to UNESCO and artist SG Vasudev who coordinated the donation.[citation needed] They were helped by art historian Marishamachar. The gallery space was renovated in 2004-5 by Rekha Rao, artist and daughter of KK Hebbar, at a cost of 16 lakhs. They changed the flooring and installed a new lighting system.

Bangalore Palace
Built in 1887 by Chamaraja Wodeyar, Bangalore Palace is inspired by England's Windsor Castle. This evocative palace has Tudor-style architecture, with fortified towers, arches, green lawns, and elegant woodcarvings in its interiors. The royal family still lives there. On display is all kinds of memorabilia, family photos, and portraits. The palace is open from 10 a.m. until 5.30 p.m. The entry fee is 230 rupees for Indians and 460 rupees for foreigners. There's a 675 rupee camera fee as well, if you want to take photos.
National Gallery of Modern Art
If you're an art lover, don't miss visiting the National Gallery of Modern Art on Palace Road. This gallery, which opened in 2009, is the third such one in India (the others are in Delhi and Mumbai). It's housed in a Colonial mansion with a garden setting, and has two interconnected wings. The old wing features works from the early 18th century up until India's Independence, while the new one displays works from a large number of modern and contemporary artists. There's a cafe on the premises as well. The gallery is open daily except Monday, from 10 a.m until 5 p.m. The entry fee for Indians is 20 rupees and 500 rupees for foreigners. (Note: unfortunately this fee was recently substantially increased and many foreigners feel that 500 rupees is way too much to pay). Photography is not allowed.
Tipu Sultan's Palace and Fort
Situated inside the Bangalore Fort area, Tipu Sultan's Palace was originally built by Chikkadeva Raya in mud. Later, Hyder Ali started reconstruction in Indo-Islamic architecture. This was completed by his son, Tipu Sultan, in 1791. The Hindu temple seen in the courtyard of the fort is the proof of Tipu Sultan's religious tolerance. The palace is open daily from 8.30 a.m. until 5.30 p.m. Tickets cost 15 rupees for Indians and 200 rupees for foreigners. Combine visiting it with nearby Krishna Rajendra Market.
Krishna Rajendra (KR) Market
This vivid, traditional local market is an assault on the senses and a treat for photographers. In the middle of it is Bangalore's bustling flower market. Go there in the early morning to best experience the colors and crowds, when piles of fresh stock are being unloaded and sold. The market also sells a variety of fresh produce, spices, and copper items.
Lalbagh Botanical Garden
This expansive garden started out as a private Mughal-style garden for the city's royal rulers. It was established in 1760 by Hyder Ali, and later extended by his son Tipu Sultan. It now covers 240 acres, and derives its name from the red roses that bloom throughout the year there. The garden is said to have the most diverse species of plants in the world. Its focal point is a majestic glasshouse, built in 1889 to commemorate the visit of the Prince of Wales. It was designed along the lines of the Crystal Palace in London.
The garden is open from 6.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m. throughout the year. It takes on a festive look during India's Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations, with a captivating show of over 200 varieties of flowers. The show also features an exhibition of hybrid vegetables.
Cubbon Park
Occupying a 300 acre area in Bangalore's business district, Cubbon Park is a popular place for walkers, joggers, nature lovers, and anyone who just wants to laze around. The park was named after the erstwhile Commissioner of Bangalore, Sir Mark Cubbon. Many ornamental and flowering trees, both exotic and indigenous, can be found there. Kids will enjoy the special Bal Bhavan play area and aquarium inside the park.
Vidana Soudha
Built in 1954, Vidana Soudha is a landmark of Bangalore, next to Cubbon Park. This enormous building is a massive example of neo-Dravidian architecture, with four domes on its four corners. It houses the Legislative Chamber of Karnataka Government, as well as accommodates many government departments. Unfortunately, it's not open to the public but is stunningly illuminated at night.
Attara Kacheri (High Court) and Surroundings
This eye-catching red, two-storied building, built in 1867 under the reign of Tipu Sultan, has magnificent neoclassical architecture. It houses the High Court and many lower courts, and sits opposite Vidana Soudha at the entrance to Cubbon Park.
Close to the Court is the red, Gothic-style State Central Library building, with imposing stone and fluted pillars. Nearby, the highlight at the Government Museum is a collection of artifacts and stone carvings dating back to the 12-century, and excavated from places including Hampi. Adjacent to the Museum is Venkatappa Art Gallery, devoted to displaying famous paintings, plaster of Paris works and wooden sculptures of renowned artist Venkatappa (who painted for the royal family). Tickets for the museum also provide entry to the art gallery.
