National Ilan University hosts international geothermal energy forum
Today is the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. To promote sustainable energy sources a geothermal energy forum was held at Ilan University today. Aside from domestic and foreign scholars publishing new research findings, attendees also saw a demonstration of Taiwan''s very first self-designed and produced geothermal turbine generator.Domestic and foreign scholars gathered at National Ilan University for a geothermal power forum, where in addition to exchanging views about this sustainable resource, they examined the feasibility of expanding Yilan’s geothermal power generation capacity.Kao Cheng-yan National Taiwan University Professor Today, we are discovering new technology that will lead us in a new direction and drive the geothermal industry in Taiwan.Taiwanese engineers have successfully designed and produced geothermal turbine generator technology to convert geothermal energy into usable energy. Three bus companies vie for customers traveling Freeway 5

Qingshui Geothermal Park Reopens
For those who still haven''t planned activities for the New Year''s holiday long weekend, the Qingshui Geothermal Park in Ilan, which was closed in November for parking lot renovations, will again be open to the public on Saturday. The Yilan County Business and Tourism Department said after the renovations, not only will there be a new expanded parking lot that can accommodate even more visitors, the public is welcome to visit the park and soak their feet in hot springs or experience the fun of boiling eggs in hotspring water.
Father Michelini is a driving force behind culture and art in Lanyang
Italian Catholic priest Father Michelini came to Taiwan in 1964 and established a connection with Taiwanese art and culture that still endures.
In 2009, Father Michelini received the Ilan Cultural Award for his contribution to Taiwan, which he now calls home.
Father Michelini was the driving force behind the I-lan International Children's Folk Game Festival back in 1996, an event which he started planning in 1994. He successfully invited performing groups from around the world to perform in Taiwan's Ilan, a move which also allowed Taiwanese art and culture to appear on the international stage.

Taiwan’s top military official among 8 killed in copter crash
TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwan’s top military official was killed in an air force helicopter crash Thursday morning that killed seven other people, the defense ministry said. Five people survived the crash in mountains outside the capital.
As chief of the general staff, Gen. Shen Yi-ming was responsible for overseeing the island’s defense against China, which threatens to use military force to annex what it considers it own territory.
The helicopter was flying from Taipei to the northeastern city of Ilan for a new year’s activity when it crashed.
According to Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense, 13 people were on the UH-60M Blackhawk helicopter, which took off shortly after 7:50 a.m. from Taipei’s Songshan air force base on its way to a base in Yilan county on the east coast. Just over 10 minutes later, it dropped from the radar screen and went down in the mountainous, heavily forested Wulai area southeast of the capital.
Shen, 63, had taken over as chief of the general staff in July after serving as commander of Taiwan’s air force, which is undergoing a substantial upgrade with the arrival of the most advanced version of the U.S. F-16V fighter.
Alexander Huang, a strategic studies professor at Tamkang University in Taiwan who had known Shen for a decade, said he had stood out as a pilot and an officer.
“He was very calm and very stable and unlike other army guys he was always smiling, so he got a specific leadership style that also made him a popular leader in the entire military,” Huang said.
It will likely be months before the cause of the crash is known, but the pilots, both of whom were killed, appeared to have been highly experienced.
“Of course, reasonable people would think in the direction of mechanical failure or maintenance problem, but without proof you can’t say anything,” Huang said.
Taiwan’s military has operated Blackhawks for decades and in 2010, completed a sale for another 60 UH-Ms from the U.S. for $3.1 billion.
