ZAKIRYANOV LAUNCHES LATEST INSTALLMENT OF KAZAKHSTAN'S UNKNOWN HISTORY
On Tuesday 25th March 2014, Hertfordshire Press hosted the book launch of Dr Kairat Zakiryanov's latest book titled, The Turkic Saga of Genghis Khan & The KZ Factor. This is Zakiryanov's second book and follows hot on the heels of his first book, Under the Wolf's Nest that has received worldwide academic acclaim.
The book launch was held at the British Library in London, UK, and is the first time a Kazakh author has spoken at the venue about such a publication. An intimate group of 40 people heard directly from the author about some of the theories and discoveries he has made in his research into Kazakh archaeology and history leading him to conclude that Genghis Khan has Kazakh origins. The author continued by seeking to dispel the notion that Genghis Khan is a brutal conqueror, destroying cities and civilisations without thought, and re-position him as a creator of new civilisations and interactions.
In his opening remarks, Open Central Asia's Editor-in-Chief, Nick Rowan, whose own book, Friendly Steppes: A Silk Road Journey was launched alongside Zakiryanov's first book in 2012, praised the book for bringing a new perspective to an age-old historical figure and asked the audience to allow time for consideration of these new theories. He presented Zakiryanov with a number of certificates and letters received from worldwide institutions ranging from Japan, Russia and the US.
Robert Wight, author of a new history on Kazakhstan, due to be published shortly by Hertfordshire Press and titled, Vanished Khans and Empty Steppes, gave a short speech allowing the audience to reconcile the question between the Mongolian views of Genghis Khan with Zakiryanov's new theories. Dr Siddarth Saxena, Chairman of the Cambridge Central Asia Forum, also spoke briefly, welcoming Zakiryanov's book to a growing set of independent literature on Kazakhstan's history. He pointed out that this was not a book with a beginning, a middle and an end, but very much the continuation of a lifelong journey for Dr Zakiryanov and the discovery of the influences the Kazakh steppe has had on Eurasian and world history.
The Turkic Saga of Genghis Khan & The KZ Factor by Kairat Zakiryanov is available at Discovery Bookshop and online at Amazon.co.uk.

The Hungry Steppe: Famine, Violence & the Making of Soviet Kazakhstan
Kluge Fellow Sarah Cameron analyzes a little-known episode of Stalinist social engineering, the Kazakh famine of 1930-33, which led to the death of more than 1.5 million people, a quarter of Soviet Kazakhstan's population. Using memoirs, oral history accounts, and archival documents, she explores the stories of those who lived through the famine, asking how this crisis reshaped Soviet Kazakhstan and what it meant to be Kazakh, and how the case of the Kazakh famine alters understandings of development and nation-building under Stalin.

160. The Ascension Cathedral
Cathedral of the Ascension is located on Gogol 40 “V” avenue. The Cathedral was built between 19th and 20th centuries, at the time of eclectisism. Its design is a sample of Russian colonial architecture of the early twentieth century. This period was marked by the use of Russian style in the Asian part of the Empire. The Cathedral has a triumphant and elegant character. Its bright colored facades adjourn the interiors lit with daylight.
Cathedral is built in 1904-1906 by architects K. Borisoglebovsky and S. Troparevsky with participation of the military engineer Zenkov. The Cathedral can place a half thousand visitors. There is a 44.2 meters tall bell tower there, which is one of the tallest wooden structures of the world, located in a seismic zone. U. Dombrovsky said that “the Cathedral is entirely made of wood, and it is as strong as if it was made of stone”. The Cathedral was included into the list of 100 wonders of the world. There are only few wooden buildings that tall in the whole world.
The roof of the Cathedral is decorated with five domes and crosses. In accordance with the Christian tradition the domes were built in honor of Jesus Christ and his four Evangelists. There were some innovations used at the construction of the Cathedral. Protective pedestals and metal ring-shaped underground plinths were used for the seismic protection of the Cathedral. In 1910 there was an earthquake in Almaty rated 10 points. People who witnessed the Cathedral during the earthquake said that it was swaying but remained to stay undestroyed after the earthquake.
During the Soviet period the cathedral hold a radio station and several different organizations. There is radio aerial installed on the bell tower in soviet period. In 1995 N.A.Nazarbayev the country head returned the Cathedral to the Christian eparchy. This act was of a great importance to the Christian people. Alexy, the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia arrived to the ceremony of reopening of the Cathedral.
There are two tombstones near the Cathedral. Urey Dombrovsky wrote in his novel that those were the tombs of the governors’ daughter and her kid. However the church officials never did any records confirming this fact. This place was desolated during the long time. The tombstones were restored for the funds of the Cathedral congregation. Now there is a table with engraved lines on it saying: “blessed those people who trust in God before they die”. It is a reminder of the cemetery that used to be here in the 19th century.

Putin proposes currency union with Belarus, Kazakhstan | #News & #Politics
Meeting of the presidents of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan
March 20, 2015
It’s time to think about the prospects of creating a currency union between Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, President Vladimir Putin has said.
“We think the time has come to talk about the possibility to form a currency union in the future,” Putin said Friday at a meeting with his Kazakh and Belarusian counterparts Nursultan Nazarbaev and Aleksandr Lukashenko in Astana.
It’s easier to protect the common financial market when working shoulder to shoulder, Putin added.
At the Friday meeting in Astana the heads of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan – all member states of the Eurasian Economic Union - are discussing a joint game plan to tackle the global economic slowdown and challenges in the energy market that has seen Brent benchmark plunging to about $54 per barrel as of March 20 from its peak of $115 per barrel last June.
The EEU countries can gradually integrate in the currency union, Aleksey Likhachev, Russian deputy minister of economic development, commented.
“I would suggest moving step by step, exactly as all EU member states enter the eurozone, gradually creating all these common financial institutions,” Likhachev said, adding that if such an order comes from the member leaders, all the sides will immediately start negotiations.
Despite a wide range of benefits, trade within the EEU may be followed by certain risks, Likhachev believes. One of the main risks is that the absence of borders and the common market for service make trade extremely dependent on fluctuations in currency exchange rates, he said.
That means any slightest fluctuation in national currencies of today’s four and of tomorrow’s five [Kyrgyzstan is about to join the EEU – Ed.] EEU countries, that are related neither to trade nor to demand, create a huge trade imbalance,” he said, adding that officials are looking for ways to smooth these problems out, and trade and industry institutions are in a constant dialogue.
In the same enclosed space, where goods, services, capital and labor are constantly moving, the existence of different currencies exacerbates the risks, Likhachev said. Apart from the economy, there are also political and social issues that are yet to be discussed, he added. -RT.
